SLOW RUN-IN ASSEMBLY
P/N 37837
for 4HD Wire Feeders
INSTALLATION
TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL ELECTRIC SHOCK, BE SURE CONTROL CABLE IS DISCONNECTED
FROM POWER SOURCE OR INTERFACE BOX BEFORE WORKING INSIDE THE WIRE FEEDER.
1. Make sure Primary Power Source is OFF.
2. Remove the outer cover from the wire feeder.
3. Remove the blank panel from the rear of the wire feeder and install the option module using the screws which
were removed from the blank panel. Refer to Figure 1 for installed position.
4. Locate and remove the jumper plug from the P5 connector on the speed control board (PCB1). DO NOT
DISCARD the jumper cable. If for any reason the option module is removed, the jumper must be reinstalled for
proper operation. Connect the cable supplied with the option module between the P1 connector of the module
board and the P5 connector of the speed control board.
5. A GRAY and a VIOLET wire in the main harness of the wire feeder have been left disconnected and are located
at the rear of the feeder. Locate these wires and connect them to the GRAY and VIOLET from the option module.
6. Two current detector assemblies have been supplied with the option module. One current detector (with 4-1/
2" leads) is required for the operation of the trigger lock function, and the second current detector (with 8" leads)
is required for the operation of the Slow Run-In function. The current detector consists of a "U" shaped steel
clip and a proximity sensor (see illustration on back page). Between the torch connection and the wire drive stand
there is a brass connection tube. Located behind the tube, on the sheet metal baffle, is a terminal bushing (TP-
2) and a snap bushing (see illustration).
7. To install the trigger lock current detector (4-1/2" leads), connect the leads from the proximity switch to the male
quick connect tabs on the terminal bushing (TP-2). To install the Slow Run-In Current Detector (8" leads), feed
the male barrel terminals through the snap bushing and connect to the female terminals on the (2) BLACK wires
from the option module. To complete the installation of the current detectors, remove one nut from the proximity
switch and place the "U" shaped clip over the brass connection tube with the open end down. Reinstall the
proximity switch, with the leads facing toward the inside of the feeder, and replace the nut. Do not overtighten.
8. F
or the Standard Mig 4HD Feeder:
Locate the RED wire in P4 connector on Wire Feeder Main Control P/C board. Cut the RED (if required) wire
approximately 2" from the connector, place the female faston (supplied) on one end and the male faston
(supplied) on the other end. Attach these leads to the RED leads from the option module.
9. For the Mig 4HD Feeder with Dual Schedule Option Installed:
Locate the jumper connector between P1 of the Dual Schedule P/C Board and P4 of the Wire Feeder Main
Control P/C board. Locate the wire connected to pin #3 of the jumper plugs (P1-1 and P4-3). Cut the wire
approximately half way between the plugs, place the female faston (supplied) on one end and the male faston
(supplied) on the other end. Attach these leads to the RED leads from the option module.
10.Reinstall the outer cover of the wire feeder and reconnect control cable.
SETUP
1. If slow run-in is desired, place the CONTINUOUS/RUN-IN/TRIGGER LATCH switch in the CONTINUOUS
position and set the Run-In potentiometer to the desired speed.
2. To set the actual welding wire feed speed, place the CONTINUOUS/RUN-IN/TRIGGER LATCH switch in the
RUN-IN OFF position and set the potentiometer on the front of the feeder to the desired speed.
3. If TRIGGER LATCH is desired, place the CONTINUOUS/SPOT/TRIGGER LATCH switch in the TRIGGER
LATCH position. Slow run-in is always "on" in the TRIGGER LATCH mode.
NOTE
• The trigger will not latch unless current is detected prior to release of the trigger.
If the arc is broken while the trigger is latched, the trigger will unlatch approxi-
mately three seconds after loss of current detect.
