Rack Installation Guidelines
for the HP BladeSystem 70 Scalable Storage Array and
the HP StorageWorks 600 Modular Disk System
Overview
This document provides guidelines for installing an HP BladeSystem
70 Scalable Storage Array or HP StorageWorks 600 Modular Disk
System into a rack.
Rack installation guidelines
WARNING: When configuring a solution, make sure that
the floor loading specifications are followed. Failure to do
so can result in physical injury or damage to the
equipment and the facility.
WARNING: The storage array with no drives installed
weighs 72.58 kg (160.00 lb). With all drives and
components installed, the storage array can weigh up to
145.15 kg (320 lb). Before configuring your rack solution,
be sure to check the manufacturer weight limits and
specifications. Failure to do so can result in physical injury
or damage to the equipment and the facility.
Observe the following guidelines when installing the SSA70 or
MDS600 into a rack:
Do not install the SSA70 or MDS600 in the bottom of a rack
other than an HP10000. To install the SSA70 or MDS600 in
the bottom of an HP10000 rack, you must first install a support
bracket and spacer. See "Installing a rack support bracket."
To install the SSA70 or MDS600 into a third-party rack, or
above any component other than a c3000 enclosure, c7000
enclosure, or another SSA70 or MDS600, you must first install
a support tray. See "Installing a support tray."
To install an SSA70 or MDS600 above a c3000 or c7000
enclosure, you must first attach a spacer to the top of the
enclosure. See "Attaching a spacer to an enclosure installed
below an SSA70 or MDS600."
No spacer is required when installing one SSA70 or MDS600
above another SSA70 or MDS600.

Installing a rack support bracket
1. Place the support bracket in the bottom of the rack and align
with the screw holes in front of the rear vertical rails.

2. Install three screws on each side of the bracket.
3. Attach a spacer to the front caster plate. Center the spacer
approximately 2.54 to 7.62 cm (1.00 to 3.00 in) behind the
front edge of the caster plate. Apply pressure to adhere the
spacer to the caster plate.
Installing a support bracket riser
To install the component:
1. Place the riser on top of the support bracket, aligning the
mounting holes.
2. Secure the riser to the support bracket with the provided self-
tapping screws.
The installation is complete.
Attaching a spacer to an
enclosure installed below an
SSA70 or MDS600
If the SSA70 or MDS600 is being installed in the rack directly above
a c3000 or c7000 enclosure, a spacer must be adhered to the top
of the c3000 or c7000 enclosure.
IMPORTANT: Do not attach the spacer to an SSA70 or
MDS600 unit.
1. Remove the protective backing from the spacer.
2. Center the spacer approximately 2.54 to 7.62 cm (1.00 to
3.00 in) behind the front edge of the enclosure. Apply pressure
to adhere the spacer to the enclosure.
IMPORTANT: Do not cover any labels on the enclosure
when attaching the spacer.
Installing a support tray
1. Install two clip nuts on each side of the front and rear of the
rack at the top and bottom of a 1U space.
2. Install each rear side bracket using two screws. Do not fully
tighten the screws. L (left) and R (right) markings indicate the
correct side for installation when viewed from the front of the
rack. The support pin should be facing inward.
3. Insert the support tray into the rack front.
4. Set the support tray on the support pins on the rear side
brackets.
5. Install four screws to secure the front of the support tray to the
rack, and then tighten all four front screws.
6. Install two screws through the rear of the support tray into the
threaded inserts on the rear side brackets, and then tighten all
screws.
7. Center the spacer approximately 2.54 to 7.62 cm (1.00 to
3.00 in) behind the front edge of the support tray. Apply
pressure to adhere the spacer to the support tray.
