KX-P8420/KX-PS8100 Apple Setup
Overview
The features of the KX-P8420 and KX-PS8100 make them
excellent printers for the Mac world. The following procedures
contain instructions on setting up the KX-P8420 and KX-PS8100 on
one Apple or a network of Apple computers.
Considerations
1) The KX-P8420 and KX-PS8100 will print from Apple computers in
the Macintosh II, Quadra, Centris, Performa and Power Macintosh
families. Apple system software version 7.5.x or above is
required.
2) Apple computers do not have parallel ports as PC’s have. Apple
printers connected directly to Apple computers print using serial
connections.
3) The KX-P8420 and KX-PS8100 do not support serial printing.
4) Apple computers have built in Ethernet. Older Macintoshes may
need a transceiver to convert the AAUI connector ( a 14 pin D
shaped connector) located on the back of the Mac to RJ-45 (Looks
like a telephone connector).
5) All models include an Ethernet card that must be used to print from
a Mac whether it is a networked Mac or a single Mac.
6) The KX-P8420 and KX-PS8100 support Ethertalk not LocalTalk.
(Both are Apple protocols) LocalTalk uses a serial connection.
7) Mac’s can be and are often connected to the same network with
IBM compatible PC’s, on NT and Novell networks. The KX-P8420
and KX-PS8100 will support printing from both Mac’s and PC’s
simultaneously.

printers will be displayed in Chooser. Example: “KXP-8420
PS direct”, “KXP-8420 PS hold” and “KX-P8420 PS print”.
Setup each printer separately to take advantage of their
features.
Note 2: The default printer name of the KX-P8420 or KX-
PS8100 is advertised in “Chooser” as “KX-P8420 PS” or
“KX-PS8100 PS”. This can be confusing if more than one of
the same printer model is installed on the same network.
The default name can be changed using WebTools. This is

The ColorSync folder contains two ICC files.
7) Arrange the windows on the desktop so that the ColorSync
folder located on the printer CD-ROM and the ColorSync
folder located on the Mac hard drive are both visible.
8) Click, hold and drag the KX-P8420 or KX-PS8100 Color
Profile ICC file located in the ColorSync folder on the printer
CD-ROM to the ColorSync folder on the Mac opened in step
4.
9) Click, hold and drag the EFIRGB ICC file located in the
ColorSync folder on the printer CD-ROM to the ColorSync
folder on the Mac opened in step 4.
10) Close all open windows and eject the printer CD-ROM by
dragging its icon to the trash can.
Note 3: To utilize the printer features when printing from a Mac
application, select “Printer Specific Options” from the “Printing
Window”.
Note 4: The above procedures are used for both networked and
single Macintoshes. When installing the printer on a single
Mac, a crossover cable is required. A crossover cable switches
the send and receive signals at one end of the cable.
Crossover cables can be purchased from many computer
retailers and mail order from Black Box (724) 746-5500.
Crossover cables are listed in the Black Box catalog under
Category 5 UTP cabling.
