Installing and Configuring the KX-P8420 on a
Novell NetWare 4.1 Network.
Overview
The features of the KX-P8420 printer make it an ideal printer in a network environment.
These steps should be used as a guideline for setting up the printer in a NetWare 4.1
network.
Installation will consist of four sections. Please proceed with the installation in the order
shown below.
Section 1
Enabling and configuring TCP\IP and IPX protocols on the KX-P8420.
Section 2
Creating and configuring the KX-P8420 print server and queue on the NetWare
server using Pconsole.
Section 3
Configuring the NetWare settings in the KX-P8420 using WebTools.
Section 4
Installing and configuring the print driver.
Considerations
1) A network administrator with rights to the NetWare server is required to make the
necessary print server & queue additions to the server.
2) If your network uses both NDS and Bindery, setup NDS first. Setting up NDS after
Bindery will overwrite the Bindery setup. The KX-P8420 cannot support NDS and
bindery emulation servers in the same NDS tree.
3) The KX-P8420 requires a bindery context to be set and activated.
4) It is not recommended to connect the KX-P8420 to the server via LPT port.
5) Configuration of the KX-P8420 on a Novell network requires some setup to be
completed using WebTools. WebTools require a JAVA enabled web browser and
TCP\IP protocol. TCP\IP protocol is only necessary for setup and administration
purposes, and is not required on every workstation printing to the KX-P8420. To
display WebTools properly a monitor resolution of 800 X 600 or higher is required.
Section 1
Enabling and configuring TCP\IP and IPX protocols from the KX-P8420 front
panel.
1) Press Menu 1 time.
2) Press 5 until “Network Protocol Setup” is displayed.
3) Press Enter and “TCP\IP Setup” is displayed.
4) Press Enter and “Enable TCP\IP?” is displayed.
5) Press Enter and “Enable TCP\IP? NO” is displayed.
6) Press 5 to change NO to YES and press Enter. “Ethernet IP Address” is
displayed.
7) Press Enter. The current IP address assigned to the KX-P8420 is displayed.
8) Use the 5 and 3 to change the IP address to the desired address. Start from the
rightmost digit and work your way left. 5 will increase the digit over the cursor, 3
will shift the cursor one digit to the left.
9) Press Enter and “Ethernet Subnet Mask” is displayed.
10) Press Enter and the current Subnet mask assigned to the KX-P8420 is displayed.
11) Use the 5 and 3 to change the Subnet mask to the desired Subnet mask. Start
from the rightmost digit and work your way left. 5 will increase the digit over the
cursor, 3 will shift the cursor one digit to the left.
12) Press Enter and “Gateway Address” is displayed.
13) Press Enter and the current Gateway address is displayed.
14) Use the 5 and 3 to change the Gateway to the desired Gateway. Start from the
rightmost digit and work your way left. 5 will increase the digit over the cursor,
3will shift the cursor one digit to the left.
15) Press Enter and “AppleTalk Setup” is displayed.
16) Press 5 one time and “IPX/SPX Setup” is displayed.
17) Press Enter and “Enable IPX/SPX?” is displayed.
18) Press Enter and “No” is displayed.
19) Press 5 one time to change “No” to “Yes”.
20) Press Enter and “Initializing Network” is displayed for a short time. Afterwards the
KX-P8420 will reinitialize and return to a Ready state. The KX-P8420 is now setup
with TCP\IP and IPX\SPX enabled, supporting 802.2, 802.3, Ethernet II and Ethernet
SNAP frame types. Both Bindery and NDS are also enabled.
Section 2
Creating and configuring the KX-P8420 print server and queue on the NetWare
server using Pconsole.
1) Run Pconsole.exe located in the public directory of the SYS volume on the NetWare
server.
2) Highlight “Print Servers” and press Enter. A window containing a list of available
Print servers will be displayed.
3) Press the Insert key to enter a new Print Server name for the KX-P8420. The KX-
P8420 has no preference towards a Print Server name, provided the name structure
is supported by NetWare.
4) Press Enter and the created print server will be listed in the Print Server window.
Press Esc to return to the Available Options window.
5) Highlight Print Queues and press Enter. A window displaying a list of available print
queues is displayed.
6) Press the Insert key to enter a queue for the KX-P8420. Unlike the Print Server
name, the KX-P8420 has specific queue naming needs. The name of the queue can
be anything, but must end in _direct, _hold and _print. (Example KXP8420_direct)
KX-P8420DX models must use the _direct suffix. KX-P8420LX & EX models can use
any and all of the three queue suffixs. It is recommended to use the _print suffix on LX
& EX models.
6) Press Enter and the created queue will be displayed in the Print Queue window.
Highlight the newly created queue and press Enter. The Print Queue Information
window is displayed.
7) Highlight Print Servers and press Enter. A window containing the print servers
servicing this queue is displayed. This is a newly created queue and there are no
Print Servers servicing it yet. Press the Insert key and the Print server Candidate
window containing a list of available Print Servers is displayed.
8) Highlight the Print Server created for the KX-P8420 and press Enter. The Print
Server is now displayed in the window of Print Servers servicing the KX-P8420
queue.
9) Press the Esc key until the Pconsole main window is displayed. Press Alt & F10
simultaneously to save and exit Pconsole.
10) Press Enter to confirm the exit. This concludes the NetWare server setup using
Pconsole. Repeat steps 5 through 9 to create the _hold & _direct queues for the LX
and EX models.
Section 3
Configuring the NetWare settings in the KX-P8420 using WebTools.
1) Start Netscape or Internet Explorer.
2) Enter the TCP\IP address of the KX-P8420 into the web browser and press Enter.
The WebTools opening window is displayed.
If the browser does not display WebTools check to make sure the TCP\IP configurations
are correct. The best way to check is to ping the printer from the workstation.
Enter an MS-DOS window.
Type ping and the TCP\IP address of the printer then press Enter.
XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX = the TCP\IP address
of the KX-P8420. If there is no response and “timed out” is reported, there is no
communication between the workstation and printer. Re-check the TCP\IP
information and cabling. If a response is received from the printer, the
connection and TCP\IP are working and the problem is likely a browser setting.
The browser is probably attempting to connect to the printer through its normal
web connection. Edit the browser preferences and select manual proxy in
Netscape or edit the connection settings in Internet Explorer.
3) Click WebSetup on the WebTools opening window and the WebSetup window is
displayed.
4) Click Network Setup and the Network Setup information is displayed. Click on the
Pserver Setup tab and the Netware setup information is displayed. Place a 4 in
the box (left click the box) to Enable Pserver Mode. NDS will automatically be
checked and enabled.
5) Click the Change Trees.. button, and a warning that conflicting Bindery settings will
be automatically deleted and the printer will need to be rebooted is displayed.
6) Press Yes to proceed and the Select Login User window is displayed. Open the
appropriate container and select a user with supervisor rights. Enter that users
password in the Enter Password box provided.
7) Press Next and the Select Print Server window is displayed. Open the appropriate
container and highlight the KX-P8420 print server created on the NetWare server
using Pconsole.
8) Press Next and the Select print Queue Root window is displayed. Highlight the
appropriate Print Queue Root and press Next.
9) Press Finish and the settings are applied to the NDS Configuration in WebTools.
10) Press OK and these settings are applied to the Pserver tab NDS Configuration.
11) Press Save at the Pserver tab.
12) Exit WebSetup by clicking the X in the right corner of the WebSetup title bar.

13) A window will appear stating the “Server Requires a Reboot” Yes, No or Cancel.
14) Click Yes to reboot the server (printer).
This concludes the Netware setup through WebTools.
Section 4
Installing and configuring the print driver.
1) Insert the CDROM into the CDROM drive. If auto-run is enabled for the CDROM
drive, setup will automatically start. If not the setup.exe file is located in the \installr
directory.
2) Click Next at the Welcome window. Click Yes to agree to the terms on the next
window and the Setup Type window is displayed.
3) Select the installation type desired. “Custom” is recommended.
The default installation of the KX-P8420 is “Compact”.
Windows 95/98
“Compact” will only load the Postscript printer driver.
“Typical” will install the Postscript driver, Adobe Type Manager and fonts.
“Custom” will install the Postscript driver, Adobe Type Manager with fonts and
color support files.
Windows NT
“Compact” will only load the Postscript driver.
“Typical” will also only load the Postscript driver.
“Custom” will install the Postscript driver and color support files.
The color support files are Pantone and CMYK color reference files that can be
printed on the KX-P8420. The print outs of these files can be referred to for color
matching within supported applications.
4) Select Next at the Choose Destination Location window and the Select Components
window is displayed.
5) Select Next at the Select Components window. By default the Custom Setup Type
selects all of the KX-P8420 components.
6) Select Lpt1 or another valid port and select Next. If the KX-P8420 is on a network,
it is simpler to select Lpt1 now during the driver setup. The network port can be
added after setup in the Details tab of the driver.
7) Select Next at the Start Copying Files window.
8) Select Finish at the Panasonic KX-P8420 Setup window. Setup from the CD-ROM
is complete.

9) Click Start, and follow the pop-up menu to Settings and Printers. Left click the
Printers folder.
10) Right click on the KX-P8420 printer icon and select Properties from the pop-up
menu.
11) Click on the Details tab.
12) Click Add Port.. then Browse..
13) The computer will browse the network and display all resources on the network.
Find the NetWare server containing the KX-P8420 print server and queue. Click on
the plus sign and browse to the queues created in Pconsole. Highlight the queue to
be used and click OK.
14) Click OK again, and Apply on the next screen. A warning regarding downloaded
fonts will be displayed.
15) Click OK. Select the Device Options tab.
16) Select the Options tab and select each option installed in the KX-P8420. Click
Apply. Send a Test Print from the General tab.
