TEST
GENERAL
This Job Aid provides instructions for installation and operational use of the Total Access 1500
Access Module, Test Access Module (AM-TAM). The AM-TAM is used in each individual slot as a
quick accurate method to identify selected Total Access 1500 backplane amphenol pin functions
either locally in proximity to the Total Access 1500 chassis, or that terminate at a remote location.
LEDS
Eight front panel LEDs indicate continuity for the following signals:
In the above display the Tip pin identification and operation has been verified for the access slot
in which the AM-TAM is inserted (1 through 24).
INSTALLATION
Put the lock/eject latch in the down position. Hold the AM-TAM by the front panel while support-
ing the card. Align the edge connector to the card guides for the access slot designated for test.
Insert the card until firmly seated in the backplane. Secure in place with the lock/eject latch. The
AM-TAM can be inserted into a hot backplane.
OPERATION
Power to the AM-TAM is -48 VDC from the backplane via the installed PSU. AM-TAM card cir-
cuitry reduces power for test and LED use.
NOTE: With -48 VDC connected to TB1 on the Total Access 1500 backplane, common and access
slots do not see power until the PSU circuit card is installed.
LED TEST
After insertion into an energized backplane, depress the LED TEST switch (SW2). All LEDs should
turn ON to verify power and LED function; this is not a system test.
Alternate Battery Power
Available through special order is a battery powered AM-TAM. The unit can switch between bat-
tery or backplane power. Battery dimensions preclude use of this card in slot 24 or in a slot that
has a circuit card inserted to the immediate right of the test slot.
SYSTEM TEST
The card is designed to test each access slot for tip/ring pin function and identification of the
four backplane amphenols identified by the following nomenclature:
T/R (P1) (A)
T1/R1 (P2) (B)
E/SG (P3) (C)
M/SB (P4) (D)
Both local and remote tests assume that power is applied to the Total Access 1500 backplane
and that a PSU card is installed. The tests are conducted after the chassis is installed and data
cables have been terminated to a punch-down, crossconnect, or terminal block in accordance
with standard wiring practices. However, in any termination, an exposed metallic point for
each pin must be available to conduct the test. See the Table below for slot, pair, and amphenol
to LED indication. When contacting the test wire to ground, ensure that a known ground
condition and continuity exists. The remote test requires communication between the Total
Access 1500 location and the remote location where the cable terminates. Perform the
following procedure to conduct the test:
Test Procedure
1. Insert the AM-TAM into slot 1, depress the TEST button to verify power and LED function
(this verification applies to all slots being tested).
2. On amphenol P1 far end termination, use a ground wire to touch Tip contact (#26) to
ground. Verify that the T LED on the AM-TAM turns ON. Touch Ring contact (#1) to
ground. Verify that the R LED on the AM-TAM turns ON.
3. On amphenol P2, conduct the same test as step 2. Verify that the T1 and R1 LEDs turn ON
similar to amphenol P1.
4. Conduct the same test on amphenols P3 and P4 to verify that the E/SG and M/SB LEDs
turn ON respectively.
This concludes testing for slot 1. If the target LED does not turn ON, investigate and resolve the
problem before continuing verification.
5. Conduct this same series of tests for the remaining slots to be tested, however, slot 2 will
use amphenol contacts 27/2, slot 3 uses 28/3 and so on. See the Table below for a
complete listing.
