GENERAL

The ADTRAN 110-Pair Protector Panel with solid state surge modules is designed to protect the

associated Total Access 1500 chassis and components by shunting to ground lightning strike

surges or other electrical surges seen on any of the network or customer loops. The panel and

connectors are pre-wired for ease of installation and all connectors, wiring, and panels clearly

labeled and identified (see illustration). Standard installation is in close proximity to the associ-

ated ADTRAN Total Access 1500.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

The protector panel fits a standard 23-inch rack and is 2 RU high, the front panel mounts flush to

the bay. The housing is all metal construction with a powder coated enamel finish. Extrusions

are provided for dressing and lacing wires, and rubber grommet inserts on the rear panel protect

the exit cables from chaffing.

CUSTOMER WIRING CONNECTIONS

The protector modules are arranged in a 50-pair, 50-pair, 10-pair configuration. The protector

block terminates at six pre-wired splice modules as described here:

■ On the customer side, four splice modules accommodate 25-pair customer loops each.

■ On the network side, two splice modules accommodate the 10-pair for the T1 network loop; one

for 5 transmit pair and one for 5 receive pair.

The cable stubs for all six splice modules are 48 inches long. See the Customer Splice Module

Pinout table on the reverse side for customer required wiring.

A removable panel on the protector block backplane protects the wire-wrap pins. On the Total

Access 1500 side of the loop, factory wire-wrap pins terminate at four Amphenol connectors that

in turn connect to the Total Access 1500 backplane on connectors P1 through P4. These cables

are 36 inches long.

T1 on the customer side is prewired to the protector panel and will terminate at the Total Access

1500 backplane on wire-wrap pins labeled P7 through P11. The customer is responsible for mak-

ing the wire-wrap connection to the Total Access 1500 backplane. Cable stub length is 36 inches.

CAUTION: Terminate all grounds to an approved ground location. Check metal-to-metal contact on all ground

connections. Ensure ground circuit continuity.

GROUND CONNECTION

A 48-inch length of stranded 6 AWG ground wire with black PVC insulation and ring terminals on

both ends is fixed to a ground lug on the right front underside of the housing. Ring lugs are sized

for a #10 stud. Terminate this ground wire to an approved ground source.

MODULE REPLACEMENT

Each module protects a particular slot position or T1 feed in the Total Access 1500. When an

electrical surge occurs the solid state module will shunt the surge to ground and will automatically

return to normal after the surge diminishes. To remove a failed module, pull on the extension

handle.

Replace with a new module of identical features and rating. On a removed module the failed side

can be identified by continuity checks. Continuity between the central ground prong and any tip

or ring prong indicates a failed module.

Two types of solid state surge modules are used:

■ T1 network (red) modules; ADTRAN P/N 3186008

■ Customer loop (black) modules; ADTRAN P/N 3186007

Aside from replacing failed modules there is no maintenance required for normal operation.
