HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL

Thismanualisorganizedintoninechapters.Tolearnhowtomakethebest

useofyourprinteryouareurgedtoreadthroughchapters1through3.The

remainingchaptersmay be treatedas a referenceguidefor programming

operations,etc. It assumes a degree of knowledgeof the operationof

computers(forinstance,itassumesyouknowabouthexadecimalnumbers).

Thechaptemareas follows:

Chapter 1— Settingup theprinter

Thischapterexplainshowtogettheprinterunpackedandsetup. Readthis

chapterbeforeyoudo anythingelse.

Chapter 2 — Controlpaneloperations

There are a numberof controlson the frontpanelwhichperformvarious

functionsrelatedto paperhandling,printmodesandfontselection.

Aftergettingsetup,readthischapterandtry outthevariousproceduresin

it to findouthowtheprinterworks.

Chapter 3 — Defaultsettings

ThischapterexplainshowtousetheElectronicDIPSwitch(EDS)modeto

makesystemsettingsontheprinter.

Sincethe PC or PC-AT familyof computersrunningunderMS-DOSis

currentlythe most popularconf@ration of microcomputer,we have in-

cludeda fewhintsandtipstohelpyouuseyourprinterwithsuchsystems.

SincevirtuallyallPCsaresoldwithaMicrosoftBASICinterpreter,wehave

also included some hints, and a sample program in this language to

demonstratethe capabilitiesof theprinter.

Chapter 7 — Troubleshootingandmaintenance

Thissectiongivesachecklistofpointstocheckifyourpnnterisnotworking

in the expectedway.It alsoincludesdetailsof someroutinemaintenance

operationsyoucancarryoutyourself.Itisnot,however,acompleteservice

manual.Callaqualifiedserviceengineerifyouareunsureofyourabilityto

carryoutanymaintenanceor semicingoperations.

FEATURES OF THE PRINTER

Thisprinterhasafullcomplementoffeatures,makingitanexcellentpartner

fora personalcomputer.ItsupportstheIBM/Epsonprintercommandsand

charactersets,enablingit to printjust aboutanythingyourcomputercan

generate,bothtextandgraphics.Someofitsmainfeaturesarethefollowing:

Sinceitis compatiblewiththeEpsonandIBMprinters,it workswithany

softwarethatsupportsthoseprinters.Thatincludesmostword-processing

andgraphicsprograms,spread-sheets,andintegratedsoftwarepackages.

Clearlyunderstandableindicatordisplaysandbeeptonesprovideimmedi-

ate feedbackwhen you press the buttonson the controlpanel.The five

buttonscan operate in combinationsto perform a surprisingvariety of

functions,includingmicro-alignment.

The ribboncartridgecan be replacedin secondsthe print head in a few

minutes.

● Versatilepaperhandling

Singlesheets,fanfoldforms,andmulti-partforms(uptoquadruple-ply)are

all accepted,and you can use eitherpush/pulltractor or frictionfeed. A

specialfeatureenablesyoutokeepfanfoldformsparkedinreadinesswhile

printingon otherpaper.

. Large variety of fonts and sizes

Theprinterhasonedraftfont,oneHigh-SpeedDraftfontandfourNLQfonts

(Courier,Sanserif,OratorandScript),italicsfor allstyles,pluscondensed

LOCATING THE PRINTER

Beforeyoustartunpackingandsettingup yourprinter,makesurethatyou

haveasuitableplaceon whichtolocateit.By“a suitabIeplace”,wemean:

A firm,levelsurfacewhichis fairlyvibration-free

Awayfromexcessiveheat(suchas directsunlight,heaters,etc)

Supplyitwith“clean”electricity,Donotconnectittothesamecircuitas

a large,noise-producingappliancesuchas a refrigerator.

Make sure the line voltage is the voltage specifiedon the printer’s

identificationplate.

To disconnecttheprintertheplughas to be disconnectedfromthewall

socket,whichhasto be locatedcloseto theprinter,andeasyto access.

Installthe printerwherethereis sufficientroomfor thepaperand any

paperbeingfedin orprintedout.

Ifyouareconnectingyourprinterwithaparallelcable,makesurethatthe

cableis within2m (6ft)of theprinter.An RS-232connectionusingthe

optionalSPC-8Kinterfacecanbemadeoverlongerdistances.

UNPACKINGAND INSPECTION

Checkingthecartoncontents

Now unpackthecontentsoftheshippingcarton,andcheckeachiteminthe

boxagainstFigure1-1tomakesurethatyouhaveeverything(thereshould

be sevenitems).

If anyof theseitemsaremissing,contactyoursupplier.

SEITING UP

Placetheprinterin the desiredlocation,andremoveallpackingmaterial

from insidethe top cover.This packingmaterialis intendedto prevent

darnagetotheprinterwhileintransit.Youwillwanttokeepallthepacking

material,alongwiththeprintercarton,incaseyouhavetomovetheprinter

to a newlocation.

Mountingtheplatenknob

Theplatenknobispackedintoarecessofthewhitefoampackingmaterial

whichheldyourprinterinsidethecarton.Besureto removetheknobfrom

thepackaging.

Mounttheknobon theplatenshaft,whichis ontheright-handsideof the

printer.Rotatethe knob on the shaftbeforepushingthe knob fully into

position.

Removethetopcoverbyliftingupthefront(usingthetwogripsoneither

side),andpullingthecovertowardsyou(seeFigure 1-4).Nowinstallthe

ribbon.(Ifyouwanttoprintwithblackonly,installthemonochromeribbon

1. Turn the tension knob counterclockwise on the ribbon cartridge to

tighten the ribbon if it is slack.

2. Guide the ribbonbetweenthe Printhead and the silverprinthead shield,

making certain that the spindles on the cartridge holder fit into the

~~cketsonthecartridge itself.

Afteryouhaveinstalledtheribboncartridge,installtherollerunit.

Openthe rear coverusingthetwogripson eitherside.

Grippingthelockleversonbothsidesoftherollerunit,fitthemounting

bracketsontotheshaftinsideof theprintermechanism.Youwillneed

to tiltthe rollerunitslightlybackward.

Securethe roller unit firmlyby loweringinto position,as shown in

Figure 1-7.

To replacethe top cover,insertthetabs intothe slotson the printercase.

Swingthe frontedgedownto closethecover.

Leavethe top coverclosedduringnormaloperation.Thecoverkeepsout

dustanddirtandreducestheprinter’soperatingsounds.Openthecoveronly

to changethe ribbonor makean adjustment.

NOTE: When you remove the color ribbon cartridge,press the ribbon

releasecatchtowardyouwithyourindexfinger.Oncetheribbonis

freeof theprinthead,thecartridgeliftsouteasily.

Connectingtheprintertoyour computer

Connecttheprinter to yourcomputerusing a standardparallelinterface

cable.OnaPCorPC/AT-typecomputer,thismeansthatyouusethe25-pin

D-typeconnectoratthecomputerend,andtheAmphenol-type36-pincon-

nector at the printerend.The contlgurationof the printer’sconnectoris

given in Chapter 8 should you need a cable for connectingto another

computer.

If youneedto connectto aserialport,usetheoptionalSerial-Parallelcon-

verter,SPC-8K.

Plug theprinter into a suitable outlet. However, DO NOT turn on thepower

switch at the front of the printer yet.

NOTE: To disconnect the printer the plug has to be disconnected from the

wall socket, which has to be located close to the printer, and easy to

access.

LOADING SINGLE SHEETS

This

sectionwilltakeyouthroughtheproceduresforloadingsinglesheets

of paper.

Ifyouareusingtheoptionalautomaticsheetfeeder(SF-10DN),refertothe

ASFinstructionbooklet.

Automaticloading

Single sheets can be loaded manually with the power off, or automatically

with the power on. We will start the easy way with automatic loading.

1. Place the paper guide in position by inserting the tabs, located on the

bottomofthe assembly,intotheslotsontherearcoverof theprinter.

2. Adjustthepaperguidestomatchthesizeofthepaperyou willbeusing.

Rememberthatprintingwillstartsomedistancefromtheleft-handedge

of the carriage.

3. Turnonthepowerusingtheswitchlocatedatthefrontoftheprinter. The

printerwillbeep,indicatingthatthereisnopaperinpositionforpnnting.

Manualloading

Itisalsopossibletoloadpapermanuallywhiletheprinter’spowerisoff.The

procedureis:

1. Placethe paperguidein positionby insertingthetabs,locatedon the

bottomofthe assembly,intotheslotsontherearcoveroftheprinter.

2. Checkthatprinterpoweris off andthereleaseleveris back.

3. Adjustthe paperguidesto matchthe sizeof paper you willbe using.

Rememberthatprintingwillstartsomedistancefromtheleft-handedge

of the carriage.

4. Placea singlesheetbetweentheguides,placingthesideon whichyou

wanttoprinttowardsthebackoftheprinter.Gentlypushthepaperdown

in theguidesuntilyoufeelit stop.

5. Turntheplatenknobclockwiseuntilthefrontedgeofthepapercomes

outfromunderthetopcover.

6. If the paper is not straight, move the release lever forward, then

straightenthepaperby handandmovethe releaseleverback.
