Introduction
The Personal Shopping Assistant PSA /go: Compact and powerful platform for personal
shopping
The availability of commercial information at the right time and the right place is increasingly be-
coming a crucial success factor in retailing. Mobile devices are excellently qualified for integrating
local service processes in a retail company’s process chain. With the PSA /go, Wincor Nixdorf of-
fers the retailers an innovative solution concept for the area of customer services, which includes
personal shopping and personal pricing.
Due to its small, lightweight and compact design, the device is very user-friendly. The bright and
crisp TFT display has a wide viewing angle and presents the information perfectly to the custom-
erswhile shopping. They can self-scan their purchases with the help of the automatically activated
imager integrated into the PSA /go. Personal shopping saves customers’ time at the point of sale,
since the goods no longer have to be removed from the shopping cart and placed on the conveyor
belt. Also self-scanning offers the possibility to apply customer specific prices to the products.
Thus, the PSA /go i
ncreases customer satisfaction and customer loyalty due to personal pricing.
Through the unique all-in-one integration of a powerful handheld computer, wireless networking
(WLAN), and automatic data capture (BCR), PSA /go enables mobile workers to dramatically in-
crease the effectiveness and efficiency in accomplishing their data management tasks while stay-
ing connected via voice or data communication channels.
The sophisticated ergonomic rugged design ensures that even the most repetitive operations can
be done with maximum ease causing the lowest possible strain for the user.

Manufacturer Certification
The device complies with the requirements of the EEC directive
89/336/EEC with regard to ‘Electromagnetic compatibility" and
73/23/EEC “Low Voltage Directive”.
Therefore, you will find the CE mark on the device or packaging.
Approved Safety
The GS logo for "Approved Safety" has been granted for the
PSA /go.
Recycling the PSA /go
The PSA /go was designed according to the Wincor Nixdorf standard
for "Environmentally Friendly Product Design and Development".
The PSA /go system is manufactured without use of FCKW and CKW
and is manufactured predominantly of components and materials that
are recyclable.
The processed plastic materials are, for the most part, re-cyclable. The
precious metals can also be recovered. For purposes of reuse, it is
helpful not to place any additional stickers on the device.
Wincor Nixdorf disposes of old machinery in an environmentally
responsible manner at a recycling center, which like the entire com-
pany is ISO 9001 certified.

Using the PSA /go device
Important notice
Before you can start using your PSA /go device for the first time, you need to insert the supplied
battery pack into the device. Charge the device battery to the full capacity before use.
Suspending the PSA /go device
The device can be in two possible states. It can be:
- switched on
- in suspend mode
When the device is in the ‘Suspend mode’, the display is switched off and the processor adopts a
sleep mode. All active processes will be suspended until the device is switched on again. The de-
vice looks as if turned off, but there are several significant differences.
By switching the device to the suspend mode the memory is not cleared. All the opened applica-
tions stop operating but will resume from the same point where they had been before entering in
the suspend mode.
To put the device to suspend mode, press the suspend button. Or press the ‘Start’ menu – ‘Sus-
pend’. The device also goes to suspend state after predefined time of inactivity. This time can be
configured in the Control Panel. (for information on its configuring, see the section Software equip-
ment / Power Properties)
To wake up the PSA /go device from suspend, press the suspend button.
Note: After waking up the device, suspend is prohibited for a period of 10 seconds. During this pe-
riod the suspend button is not responding.
Resetting the PSA /go device
In case the software on the PSA /go device malfunctions or freezes, reset has to be used to bring it
to normal state. There are two types of reset – soft and hard.
The reset button is located aside the suspend button, lowered into the housing. Pressing the reset
for a short time invokes soft reset. Pressing it for longer than 3 seconds initiates hard reset. See
next table for actions and consequences for the memory.

Battery Pack
The battery pack should not be opened, destroyed or incinerated since they may leak or rupture,
and release the ingredients they contain into the environment.
Handling: Do not crush, pierce, short-circuit (+) and (-) battery pack terminals with conductive (i.e.
metal) materials. Do not directly heat or solder. Do not throw into fire. Keep battery pack in non-
conductive (i.e. plastic) trays.
Storage: Store in a cool (preferably below 25°C) and ventilated area away from moisture, sources
of heat, open flames, food and drink. Keep adequate clearance between walls and battery pack.
Temperature above 45°C may result in battery pack leakage and rupture. Since short-circuit can
cause burns, leakage and rupture hazard, keep battery pack in the original packaging until use and
do not jumble it.
Conditions to avoid:
- Heat above 60°C or incinerate.
- Deform, mutilate, crush, pierce, and disassemble.
- Short-circuit.
- Prolonged exposure to humid conditions.

Charging policy of PSA /go device
How to efficiently charge the battery
Insert PSA /go device into Docking Station or connect it to the Travel plug. Suspend the device – in
suspend mode device uses minimal power.
Here are some tips / tricks how to save more power in your battery:
- always put the PSA /go device on charge during the night
- check the battery status (see section Control Panel Utilities / Power) and when battery is low
put device on charging
- notice that battery is properly charged only at temperature within 0°C to +45 °C because of
lithium–ion material.
- to save power you can also reduce LCD backlight, see ‘Advanced Backlight’ in Section ‘Dis
play’

Discharged battery
When the battery is discharged, the device looses all the data in RAM. There is no backup battery.
Put the device to the docking station or connect it to the Travel plug.
Note: The device makes a hard reset, when it is connected to power after discharge.
Exchanging the Battery Pack
The device has no backup battery to prevent data loss when exchanging the battery pack. We ad-
vise to backup all the data to persistent storage before the operation. Autorun can be used to re-
store the settings.
Battery notification in the system tray
In order for the user to see the battery status easily, the following icons are displayed in system
tray. See the next table for their meaning:
Icon Meaning Description
(None) Battery normal Normal status of battery, device can be used.
Battery low Battery allows the device to be used, but it should be
recharged at first possibility.
Battery critical Battery has charge enough only to prevent data loss;
device should not be used and should be switched to
suspend state.
Status of battery charge This icon shows charge percentage of battery.
Charging the battery Displayed when battery is being recharged from exter-
nal power.
Running on external power Displayed when battery is full and device is running on
external power.

Using keyboard
The PSA /go device is not equipped with a physical keyboard.To enter text or numbers it is possi-
ble to use:
- Physical keyboard (connected to the Docking Station)
- Virtual keyboard
Virtual keyboard
You can show or hide virtual keyboard by tapping icon
in the tray bar on the desktop of the de-
vice. A menu with the following items is displayed (see next picture):
- Standard Keyboard
- Hide Input Panel
Choose the desired action with keyboard.

Note: Default action for ‘Action Key 1’ is the ‘show and hide keyboard’ action.

Standard keyboard – This one is default by the operating system. It can be used in all screen
rotations. Stylus is necessary for use.

Persistent Storages
Persistent Storage Memory
Persistent Storage memory allows users to use free flash memory for storing data or applications.
The content of Persistent Storage does not get erased on battery discharge or hard reset.
‘Persistent Storage’ is accessible as a folder in the PSA /go file system. It can be used the same
way as the standard file system in Windows Explorer.
miniSD Card
Mini Secure Digital card (miniSD card) can be used to share or copy files between devices or be-
tween device and PC. Also the content of these cards does not get erased on battery discharge or
hard reset.
miniSD card is accessible as a folder ‘Storage Card’ in the PSA /go file system. It can be used the
same way as the standard file system in Windows Explorer.
Note: The miniSD card slot is accessible only via the battery compartment, so inserting and remov-
ing the miniSD card erases the RAM of the device.
Autorun Feature
The PSA /go device has ‘Autorun Feature’. After restoring power or hard reset, the operating sys-
tem searches for the file autorun.exe on all persistent storages. When such a file is found, it is exe-
cuted. The autorun file stored in Persistent Storage has a higher priority than the autorun file on the
miniSD card.
How to use it:
Create an application and name it ‘autorun.exe’:
Copy it to any of the persistent storages. (Persistent Storage or miniSD card)
After restoring power or hard reset, system will copy ‘autorun.exe’ application to ‘\Windows’ direc-
tory on PSA /go. Then the system will run the application with parameter ‘install’ from there, i.e.:
autorun.exe /install
By this way you can easily create your own start-up or installation application. We also provide an

Software Equipment
Control Panel Utilities
You can access various functions of PSA /go devices from the Control Panel. Open it via Start
Menu (Start / Control Panel).

Note: All the applications and utilities marked with ‘(Gotive)’ are made and supplied by Gotive.
These applications and utilities are fully supported by Gotive Support. All the other utilities without
the mark or marked with ‘(system)’ are provided by Windows CE system or by other solution
providers.

Action Keys (Gotive)
Action Keys utility allows the user to configure action keys (buttons) on device. You can set two
types of actions for a button, first one when you simply press it and the second one when you push
and hold the button for a while.

As action you can choose from:
- Running an application of your choice or
- Simulate pressing a keyboard key (like Shift, Ctrl) or
- No action
If you choose ‘Run application’ for a button, you have to select also the application (executable
file). Consequently, whenever you push the button, the desired application will be started.
In ‘Simulate keyboard’ simply choose a key or combination of keys that will be executed when you
push the button.

Where:
- Push - means a simple push of the action key
- Hold - means to push and hold the action key for predefined time (default: 1 s)
- Action - action performed (name of application or process started)
BCR Control (Gotive)
BCR (Bar Code Reader) Control allows testing barcode scanner functionality.

Tapping of ‘Scan’ button starts the bar code scanning. You can simply retrieve bar code or check
BCR functionality. If you tap on ‘Aim’ button, BCR module starts aiming. It means that instead of a
scanning ray, BCR module emits an aiming ray. You can easily aim on bar code and than tap
‘Scan’ button to retrieve the code.
Note: «Aim» is only available with the Laser Scanner Version!
There are predefined actions for Action keys. Action key 2
starts scanning the bar code (simply
push). When you push and hold for a while the Action key 2,
aiming function will start. For more de-
tails please see the section ‘Action keys’.

In the section ‘BCR parameters’ BCR Control allows the user to test modification of the parame-
ters of BCR module. You can read the settings with ‘Read’ button select a parameter and set the
value for this parameter and then write changes to BCR module memory using the ‘Write’ button
(see Figure 8).
You can easily disable/enable reading of some codes. To set the base (factory) settings use
‘Reset’ button – your changes will be lost.
Note: Changes of BCR parameters are temporary. After closing BCR Control the changes are lost.

Firmware control (Gotive)
Firmware control displays the:
- OS version number: 1.43 (Figure 9)
- Boot loader version: 1.21 (Figure 9)
It allows the user to:
- Initiate the firmware update
- Erase RAM content
- Software reset

When you choose ‘Start the firmware upgrade’, your device will start upgrade procedure. See
chapter: Firmware upgrade of the Advanced User’s Guide for more details.
Option ‘Erase RAM content’ will erase all programs and data stored in memory.
Note: All your data will be lost after the erasing! In this case also registry settings will be restarted
to factory settings.
Option ‘Software reset’ causes ‘warm reset’ of the device. The operating system is reloaded, all
applications are closed and the storage memory and the registry settings are preserved.

LCD Control (Gotive)
LCD Control allows a user to set backlight of the PSA /go.

Power
Power Properties allow the user to control and set power options for the PSA /go. These two tabs
are important:
- Main Battery – current power status overview of main battery
- Schemes – Settings for PSA /go Power schemes
Main Battery
This tab shows the Main Battery status, battery capacity in percents, voltage, charge current (nega-
tive number means discharging) and battery temperature.

Schemes
On this tab you can define Power Schemes for device running on battery and for device powered
from AC source. Each Power Scheme holds the time, after which the Gotive device goes to:
User Idle, System Idle, Suspend state.

The suspend state is most important for the user. The other 2 states may be used by the applica-
tion or by the system. The device enters the suspend state after the sum of the times. (In case of
power settings shown in Figure 12, the device goes to suspend after 9 minutes of inactivity).
