1 Introduction
This document describes the conguration of the Pulse System using:
- STENTOFON IP intercom stations
- STENTOFON IP speakers
- 3rd-party IP telephones
- IP telephone gateways
- STENTOFON IP DECT 300
1.1 Pulse System Overview
STENTOFON Pulse is an IP-based intercom system for upto 16
intercom stations. The system works with all STENTOFON IP intercom
stations. In addition, it is possible to extend the system with up to 10
3rd-party SIP terminals and 4 SIP gateways. One of the STENTOFON
IP intercom stations is designated as the Pulse Server, which acts as
a SIP server, managing how calls are set up and routed, and also is the
single point for conguration of all intercom stations in the system.
LAll IP intercom stations in a Pulse installation must be located on
the same LAN (IP subnet).
1.2 Pulse SIP Licenses
The SIP station license allows you to extend your system with IP
telephones, IP DECT cordless phones, and PC and mobile VoIP clients.
The SIP trunking license allows you to connect to other telephone
systems using SIP trunks or analog and mobile network gateways.

2 PulseSystemInstallation&Conguration
The setup procedure for the Pulse system is as follows:
1. Plan the installation
2. Connect and set up Pulse Server
3. Connect other intercom stations
4. Congure directory (phonebook)
5. Verify system setup
2.1 Plan the Installation
2.1.1 Cabling
The cable between the PoE network switch and the station must be
Category 5 cable (Cat 5) or better
Maximum cable distance between the PoE switch and the station is
100 meters
All intercom stations in a Pulse installation must be located on the
same LAN (IP subnet)
2.1.2 Planning the System
When planning a Pulse system, you have to:
Decide on the type of IP intercom for each location: entrance,
reception, elevator, etc.
Select which intercom station should be the Pulse Server (usually a
master station)
Assign directory (phone) number and name to intercom stations
Assign IP addresses and settings
A typical installation plan may look like the following:

2.1.3 Directory Number & Name
Directory Number is the number used to dial to the intercom station. It
is recommended to use a two-digit number. Name is a logical name you
can assign to the station.
2.1.4 IPAddresses&Conguration
The Pulse Server station must have a static IP address. Other IP
intercom stations may use static addresses or an automatic (DHCP) IP
address assignment.
IP addresses must be unique in your network. These addresses are
normally managed by the IT department. Hence, you should consult
your IT department on the IP addresses to use in the network.
2.2 Connect and Set Up Pulse Server
2.2.1 Connecting Pulse Server to the Network
One of the intercom stations must be set as the Pulse Server. The Pulse
Server acts as a server for the other intercom stations in the system.
Any station can be a Pulse Server, but it is recommended to use a
master station.
LThere can only be one Pulse Server in the installation.
Connect the LAN port of the Pulse Server station to a PoE network
switch.
LDo not connect any other stations at this point
All STENTOFON IP intercom stations, with the exception of the Turbine
stations and the Dual Display station, have two RJ45 network ports:
LAN port is for connecting to the network
AUX port is for connecting to auxiliary equipment such as a PC.

The IP stations support Power over Ethernet (PoE, IEEE 802.3 a-f)
where power can be drawn from either the spare line or signal line.

LOptionally, most of the IP stations can use a 24 VDC power
supply. See the documentation for the various IP stations for
information on connecting local power supply.
2.2.2 Logging on to the Pulse Server
In order for your PC to communicate with the station it is necessary to
change its Internet Protocol Properties to use an IP address that is in
the same range as 169.254.1.100, e.g. 169.254.1.1 with subnet mask
255.255.0.0.
Access the Pulse Server station by logging into the web interface using
a standard web browser on your PC:

1. Open a web browser
2. In the browser’s address bar, type 169.254.1.100 and press the
ENTER key
- 169.254.1.100 is the default IP address of the IP station
- The station Login page is displayed.
To log into the station:
1. Click Login
2. Enter the default User name: admin
3. Enter the default password: alphaadmin
The Station Information page will now be displayed, showing the default
IP master station conguration.
2.2.3 Setting Up the Pulse Server
Under the Station Main tab, click Main Settings to congure station
mode and IP parameters.
Station Mode
Since this is the Pulse Server station, it will function as the intercom
server or exchange:
Select the Use Pulse Server radio-button
IP Settings
Select the Static IP radio-button
Enter values for:
-IP address (e.g. 169.254.1.99)
-Subnet mask
-Gateway (optional)
-DNS Server 1 & 2 (optional)
-Hostname (optional)
Click Save followed by Apply to restart the Pulse Server station.

2.3 Connect Other Intercom Stations
Connect all other IP intercom stations to the network. Note that all other
IP intercom stations have to be on the same LAN (IP subnet) as the
Pulse Server.
Wait for the stations to boot up (approximately 60 seconds) before
proceeding to the next step.
2.4 CongureDirectory(Phonebook)
Log into the Pulse Server station with the new IP address (e.g.
169.254.1.99) that you have just set under Station Main > Main
Settings. After login, a new tab called Server Management will become
available.
Under the Server Management tab, select ServerConguration >
Directory Settings
The Pulse Server station will auto-discover all the other stations on the
LAN.
To identify the individual stations on the LAN:
Click Play
- You should now hear a tone from the station you selected.
You can now set directory numbers, names, IP addresses,proles,
etc. for all the stations in the network. In our example, the Pulse Server
station is designated as Reception with directory number 10, while the
two desktop stations are John Smith and Peter Brink with directory
numbers 11 and 12 respectively. The two substations are the Entrance
and Elevator with directory numbers 13 and 14 respectively.
Click Save followed by Apply

When you click Apply, the Pulse Server will download the directory
settings to all the STENTOFON IP intercom stations and do a system
reboot.
Password is an optional eld you can set to increase the security level.
The password is used by other intercom stations to register with the
Pulse Server.
2.5 Verify System Setup
To verify that your system is up and running:
Select Server Management > Server Monitoring
All stations that have been congured should be displayed in the table.
Stations that are up and running will have the status Registered.

3 OptionalCongurationParameters
3.1 CongureCallandAudioSettings
It is optional to congure the call and audio settings. Default settings will
be used if they are not congured.
Select Server Management > ServerConguration> Call and
Audio Settings
The Call and Audio Settings menu include the following parameters:
Autoanswer
Unchecked: Ringing Mode - the station will ring when it is called.
Checked: Open Mode - the call will be automatically connected when
the station is called. Optionally, a time period could be set for ringing
after which the station goes into open mode.
Auto-answer is typically enabled (checked) for substations and not for
master stations.
Disconnect By Button
When Enabled the call button will function as a cancel button during
conversation. This parameter is applicable to substations with a call
button.
Activate Relay On Event
Most STENTOFON IP stations (except for the Desktop Master and
Dual Display station) have a relay. Here, you can select the events that
activate the relay. The available events are:
DTMF <#> - Reception of a DTMF (keypad) digit from a remote
station during the call
● Ringing
In call
When the relay is activated, this parameter determines how long the
relay should stay ON.
Speaker Volume
This parameter sets the speaker volume level (0-7) for the station.
Noise Reduction
This parameter enables active noise cancellation level (0-7). For
stations that are located in noisy environments, it is recommended that
the noise cancellation level be set to 3 or 4.

DAKs (Direct Access Keys) are function keys on the IP master stations.

A DAK supports the following functions:
Call To
Select Line
Call To
This parameter sets the directory number to call to when the key is
pressed.
Select Line
Select Line can be used to park an on-going call, and to make a new
call. To receive more than 1 call, Select Line should be assigned to at
least one DAK.
This parameter assigns the key to an external phone line. This requires
that the Pulse system is connected to an external telephone system
via a SIP gateway. You can have multiple lines on an IP master station.
The active line is indicated by a green LED. You can change the line
by pressing the associated DAK. Lines that have an active call are
indicated by a red LED.
The DAK keys can be congured via the Pulse Server:
Select Server Management > ServerConguration> Direct
Access Key Settings
Select the station to set single-touch access to your most frequently
used directory numbers and functions.

3.3 CongureCallButtononIPSubstation
The call button on the IP Substation can be congured via the Pulse
Server.
Use a web browser and log into the Pulse Server station (e.g. IP
address: 169.254.1.99)
Select Server Management > ServerConguration> Direct
Access Key Settings
Select the station on which you want to program the Call Button
- The Call Button is Input Button 1
Under Value enter the directory number to call when the button is
pressed.
3.4 ModifyPulseStationProles
The Station Prole denes a set of service features and parameters that
are available for a group of stations.
The Pulse system can have ve station proles:
Prole 1 - Default
Prole 2 - Substation
Prole 3 - Display station
Prole 4 - Operator
Prole 5 - Gateway
The following service features and parameters are included in the
station prole:
Door opening including remote I/O
Outgoing call restriction
Group Call and Busy Override restriction
To modify station proles:
Select Server Management > StationProles

The following parameters can be set for the station prole:
Prolenickname
The name of the prole. Any text can be used.
Outgoing calls allowed
Stations with this prole can call stations with the checked proles.
Forbidden will be displayed on the station if this is denied.
Relay activation allowed
Stations with this prole can activate the relay (e.g. Door Opening) on
stations with the checked proles.
Group calls allowed
Stations with this prole are allowed to dispatch the checked group calls
Busy override allowed
When calling a busy station, stations with this prole can force a
connection by pressing 5.
3.5 Group Call
The Pulse system supports 4 group calls.
LOnly STENTOFON IP stations can receive Group Call audio. SIP
phones are not able to receive group call.
Operation
A group call is activated by dialing the appropriate code (e.g. 84). A
ding-dong signal is heard in all member stations.
Press the M-key to speak.
Press the C-key to disconnect.
Default Group Call Settings
The factory default settings for group calls are as follows:
Nickname(DisplayText) Directory Number Priority Station Members
All Call 84 EMERGENCY All Stations
Group Call 1 85 HIGH None
Group Call 2 86 NORMAL None
Group Call 3 87 LOW None
When adding a new station to an existing Pulse system, the station will
automatically become a member of the All Call group.
CongurationOfGroupCalls
The group call properties are congured via the Pulse Server.
Use a web browser and log into the Pulse Server station (e.g.
169.254.1.99)

Select Server Management > Group Call
Change the parameters for each group as required:
Nickname
This is the display text shown in the initiating station when the group call
is activated. Can be any text.
Directory number
The number to dial to activate the group call. If changed, a reboot of the
Pulse Server is required for the changes to take effect.
Priority
Priorities can be set for one group call at a time. A group call with higher
priority will override a lower priority group call.
EMERGENCY: Volume and handset override. The Group Call audio is
mixed with conversation audio
HIGH: The Group Call audio is mixed with conversation audio
NORMAL: The Group Call audio is not played if there is an ongoing
conversation
LOW: The Group Call audio is not played if there is an ongoing
conversation
Stations in group
Select the stations that should receive Group Call audio. You can select
all stations in one operation be checking the Add all stations box.
There is a Save button for each group call.
Remember to click Save before you make changes to the next group
call.
Troubleshooting
Q: When making a group call, the ding-dong chime is heard in the
stations, but there is no audio.
A: The problem is that the multicast audio does not reach the stations,
which may be due to two things:

If the stations are using static IP addresses, you need to set the
Gateway address for all stations. Log into the Pulse Server, go
to Main Settings and set the Gateway address to be the Pulse
Server IP Address (unless you have a real gateway). Go to Server
Management > ServerConguration, click Save then Apply. Now
all stations should have a gateway address.
The network switch may be dropping multicast packets (For
example, Linksys ‘business series’ switches drop all multicast
packets with default conguration). If this is the problem, check the
manual for the network switch.
3.6 CongureRinglist
Log on to the web interface of the station that will be making the call to
congure the ringlist of the stations that should be called.
To congure a ringlist:
Select SIPConguration > Direct Access Key Settings
There are variants of ringlists that can be set such as ringing time
intervals, loopback, and ringing together with previous stations.

3.7 Add SIP Accounts for 3rd-Party IP Telephone
and IP DECT
3.7.1 Install License
Before adding SIP accounts to your system, you need to obtain the
Pulse 3rd Party SIP Terminals license key.
To install a license:
Select Station Administration > Licensing
Enter the license key in the New License eld and click Insert
License
The Licensing list should now show all the licenses that are available.

3.7.2 Create SIP Station Account
Under the Server Management tab, select ServerConguration>
Directory Settings
Under Third Party SIP Terminals enter the Directory Number, Name,
Prole, and Password for the IP telephone.
Click Add followed by Save
3.7.3 CongureIPTelephone
You now have to log into the 3rd-party IP telephone to congure the
SIP account to register it with the Pulse Server station. The Directory
Number and Password (SIP Account) created in section 3.7.2 is used to
register the 3rd-party station with the Pulse Server.
3.8 Add SIP Accounts for Telephone Gateways
3.8.1 Install License
Before adding SIP accounts to your system, you need to obtain the
Pulse Gateways license key and install it under Station Administration
> Licensing.
3.8.2 Create SIP Gateway Account
Under the Server Management tab, select ServerConguration>
Directory Settings
When a valid Pulse Gateway license has been installed, the Gateways
parameter will be available.

Under Gateways set the following values:
- Directory Number: 0
- Name: <name of your choice>
- Prole: Gateway (Gateway option will only be available if there is a
valid license installed)
Click Add followed by Save
LDirectory Number 0 is optional as you can use any number to
make external calls through the Gateway.
3.8.3 Access Restrictions
Access restrictions are set in the StationProles menu in the Pulse
Server station:
Select Server Management > Station Proles
3.8.4 CongureTelephoneGateway
Log into the Telephone Gateway to register it to the Pulse Server by
using the SIP Gateway Account created in section 3.8.2.
3.8.5 Troubleshooting
When dialling the gateway access number (e.g. 0), the station display
may show one of the following error messages:
Forbidden
The station is restricted to call via the gateway due to Station Proles
settings. In the Pulse Server station:
Select Server Management > Station Proles
Enable the station to call the Gateway.
Error code 488
This is most likely due to a codec mismatch. Check that the codec in the
SIP gateway is set to G.711U-law.
Disconnected. No number 0
The SIP Gateway is not registered to the Pulse Server station. The
SIP Gateway registration can be veried via the Pulse Server:
- Select Server Management > Server Monitoring
- The SIP Gateway should be displayed and have status
Registered. If it has status Not Registered, check the setup of the
SIP gateway.
The gateway is an AudioCodes MP114/118 and the telephone line is
not connected to the gateway
