IMPORTANT- PLEASE READ
For efficient operation it is essential that all the airways and filters are
cleaned regularly and that the dust container is emptied before it is
full and after every use of the appliance. Failure to do this will restrict
the airflow and result in poor cleaner performance.
Damage caused by failure to empty the dust container and to clean
the filters and airways as specified in these instructions will not be
covered by the warranty.
AUTOMATIC SHUT-OFF THERMOSTAT
There is a safety thermostat inside the cleaner to prevent the unit
from being run with too high a vacuum rate. If the airways or filters
get clogged the pressure in the cleaner will be excessive and the
thermostat will activate. The cleaner then will stop working to
protect the motor from overheating.
If this happens switch off and unplug the cleaner immediately. Allow
the motor to cool down for one hour and clean the airways and filters
thoroughly. Plug the cleaner in again and switch on: the cleaner
should now operate normally.

!
Emptying the Dust Cup
Empty the dust cup regularly to maintain the efficient
performance of the cleaner. Failure to do this may impair the
efficiency of the cleaner.
The maximum dirt level is marked on the
Dust Cup. Empty the Cup before the dirt
reaches the MAX mark.
$ Switch the cleaner off and unplug it
from the mains.
$ Set the cleaner upright and ensure it is
locked in place.
Hold the Dust up by the handle and
press the dust cup release catch.
Hinge the cup out of its cradle.
Carefully remove the dust cup from the
cleaner, keeping it vertical.
Invert the dust cup over a bin.
Release the catch on the bottom lid.
Shake and tap the dust cup lightly to
remove as much dust as possible.
Close the lid.
If you are still vacuuming, replace the cup.
Cleaning the Dust Cup and Filter
When you have finished cleaning you must clean the HEPA filter
in the dust cup after emptying it. This is essential.
The HEPA filter traps up to 99% of particles as fine as 0.3
microns. This includes mites, pollen grains and fine hairs.
Because of this very high level of filtering it is essential that you
clean the filter regularly to maintain efficient filter performance.
Remove the Dust Cup from the cleaner and empty it.
Place the Dust cup on a worktop or sturdy
table.
Unclip the lid catch and hinge the lid
back as far as it will go.
Do NOT use force!
General Do's and Don'ts
$ Do NOT pull the vacuum cleaner around the room by the
hose as it could tip over and cause damage.
$ Do NOT over extend the hose. Trying to reach beyond the
hose length could cause the vacuum to tip over.
$ Do NOT pull or carry the cleaner by the cord, close a door
on the cord, or pull the cord around sharp edges or corners.
$ Always use the handle when lifting or moving the cleaner
between different locations. Do not lift the cleaner with the
dust cup handle on its own.
$ Never clean the stairs with the cleaner more than one stair
above you as the cleaner could topple and cause injury or
damage. Follow all the instructions on the previous page.
$ Before moving the cleaner a long way or up or down a flight
of stairs,
$ As soon as you have finished using the hose, replace the
nozzle and mufti tool and put the hose back in its clip .
IMPORTANT NOTE WHEN USING THE ACCESSORIES
Never attach or remove accessories when the vacuum
cleaner is switched on.
The cleaner is fitted with a spring loaded deflection plate located
under the cleaner. When the cleaner is set upright this plate and
the small wheels under the cleaner keep the brush clear of the
floor surface minimising the likelihood of floor damage. See P 8
Always have the cleaner in
the upright position when
u s i n g t h e h o s e a n d
acce ssory tools. If the
cleaner is operated so that it
is tilted forward the brush
will dig into the floor surface
and could damage it. There
is also the possibility that the
cleaner may tip over.

Hold the HEPA filter
cage by the two finger
grips and lift it out of the
cup.
You should now remove
t h e c y c l o n e f i l t e r
assembly. Open the
base of the Dust Cup
and push t he fil ter
assembly out.
Hold the assembly in
both hands.
Rotate the lower section
of the filter anticlockwise
and separate the two
sections of the filter.
Rinse both sections of the cyclone filter assembly under the tap in
lukewarm water to remove any dust. The dust cup and dust cup
cover can also be washed in lukewarm water. Allow all sections
to dry fully before re-assembly
Cleaning the SMS Filter
At least once a month or when you notice a decrease in suction,
wash the SMS filter by running it under the tap.
The filter is in two sections. Invert the filter and lift out the inner
black filter. This filter has a rough and a smooth side. The rough
side faces down (into the Dust Cup).
Brush out both sections of the filter with a soft brush. If the filters
are soiled, wash them under running water until they are
thoroughly clean. Do not use strong detergents. DO NOT place
any part in a dishwasher. Allow all parts to fully dry before re-
assembly. This may take up to 24 hours. Only when the filter is
dry should you replace them in the Dust Cup.
The white filter will discolour over time. Although this does not
indicate a loss in effectiveness, the filter should be replaced at
least every six months to keep your cleaner in peak condition.
When all components
are dry, re-assemble
the filter and Dust
cup reversing the
instructions at the top
o f t h e p r e v i o u s
column.
Now replace the Dust
Cup in the cleaner.
Cleaning the Motor Filter
Unplug the cleaner from the mains supply.
The motor filter is located in a cage above the power head at the
front of the cleaner.
Slide the catch at the
bottom of the cage to the
left to unlock it and then lift
it out.
Brush out any debris
carefully from the grille
behind the filter cage.
Remove the filter from the
cage. Brush out the filter
And the filter cage with a
soft brush. If the filters is
soiled, wash it under
running water until tit is
clean. After washing allow
both parts to fully air dry.
(This may take up to 24
hours.) Only when the
filter is dry should you
replace it in the cleaner.
Replace the filter in the cage (with the rough side facing inward).
To replace the cage, align
it into the recess at the top
and hinge it shut. Now
fasten the catch by sliding
it to the right.

Clearing a Blockage
If the cleaner loses suction and the dust in the dust cup is below
the MAX mark, this may be due to a blockage.
DO NOT operate the cleaner if the suction is impaired.
$ Set the cleaner upright, switch off and unplug immediately.
$ Empty the dust, check and clean all the filters.
$ Disconnect the hose to see if debris has backed up.
$ Examine the multi tool.
$ Remove any blockage with a stick or broom handle.
If all the above seem clear, the lower hose may be blocked.
Pull the lower hose collar off the
inlet pipe. The fit is intentionally
tight.
Clear the blockage and replace
the hose.
If you notice that the brush speed is slow and/or there is a
loss of suction, this may be due to the brush getting clogged.
Prompt action will maintain cleaner performance and avoid any
potential problems of belt slippage.
Switch the cleaner off and unplug it from the mains.
Check that the
deflection plate
m o v e s f r e e l y.
Clean the brush
area and remove
all obstructions
before continuing
to use the cleaner.
IMPORTANT-Motor Thermostat
If the vacuum cleaner should overheat, the protective
thermostat will automatically turn the unit off.
If this occurs: Switch off and unplug. Check and clear any
blockage and clean/replace the filter.
Wait at least 45 minutes before attempting to reuse the
cleaner. After the cleaner has cooled down plug in and switch
on. The vacuum should now start.
DEFLECTION PLATE
Changing the Drive Belt
Sluggish speed and loss of suction may be caused by a worn or slack belt. A spare belt is provided.
DO NOT replace this components yourself unless you are confident that you can carry out this procedure satisfactorily.
Make sure the cleaner is switched off and unplugged from the mains before you start work. Protect the work surface if necessary.
You need a No2 Phillips screwdriver to carry out this procedure.
Stage 1. Remove the Cover Plate
Remove the Dust Cup.
Angle the cleaner fully back.
Turn the cleaner over and place it on a stout work bench
The cover plate is attached to the cleaner with six screws.
There are identified below (you can only access the centre
screw by first lifting up the deflection plate).
1: Remove all six screws and keep them safe
2: Ease the cover plate off to expose the brush and roller
1
2
Page 8
Stage 2. Remove the Brush
Ease the Right end of the brush out of its bearing.
Repeat for the Left edge.
Now lift out the brush with both hands. Be careful as the belt is still under tension.
Pull out the brush from the belt.
VCUP15 Vacuum Cleaner User Guide
Stage 3. Remove the Belt
Inspect the belt for wear. If the inside of the belt is very shiny but otherwise unworn and free from
nicks or tears, you may be able to extend its useful life by turning it inside out.
If you are not replacing the belt, clean it carefully with a dry cloth to remove any residue but do not
remove the belt..
When you are removing or replacing the belt, twist the belt on its side and slide the edge of the
belt around the end of the spindle.
(You may find it easier to cut the belt off with a pair of sharp scissors.
Manoeuvre the belt over the spindle, straighten it
out and lay the belt flat on the spindle.
Thread the brush through the belt.
Position the belt over the convex section of the
brush . Make sure the belt is not twisted
Stage 4. Replace the belt
Stage 5. Replace the brush
Insert the brush into the belt.
A. Hold the brush in both hands. Pull the brush towards you and partially insert the left hand side bearing of the brush into its socket
with your thumb. (This will place the belt under tension, so you may have to use moderate pulling force.)
B: Align the Right Hand side of the Brush over the Bearing and pressthe brush into place.
Press sides of the brush fully home.
Finally, rotate the brush by hand to ensure that the mechanism moves freely and that the belt does not foul the guides and is central
on the motor spindle.
Page 9
VCUP15 Vacuum Cleaner User Guide
Stage 6. Re-assembly
Rotate the brush by hand to ensure that the mechanism moves freely and that the belt does not foul the guides and is central on the
motor spindle.
Now replace the cover plate .
Place the cover plate into position and press the plate to the cleaner body all round to ensure a good fit.
Screw the plate to the cleaner body. Remember the screw under the deflection plate.
Before using the cleaner, switch it on and confirm that the brush rotates freely and that the brush height mechanism operates properly.
