selected heavy-duty NiCd cells developed for high cur-
rent applications
cell arrangements are embedded in special design for
increased mechanical ruggedness and safety
housing is ergonomically shaped

Sachtler electronic ballasts, and Sachtler chargers
Shoulder strap and belt
2.2 Operation
The Belt-Pack® batteries are equipped with a belt and a
shoulder strap. Adjust the shoulder strap to carry the bat-
tery conveniently at your hip. If you carry the battery at the
right side of your body, the shoulder strap should rest on
the left shoulder, and vice versa.
Use the belt to “lock” the battery to your body.
2.3 Open circuit voltages
The output voltages of NiCd batteries can be higher than
the nominal voltages listed under 2.1, if a battery was fully
charged:
B1245 and B1270 max. 16.5V
B3045 and B3070 max. 35V
Once a fixture or ballast is connected and operated, these
open circuit voltages will drop to the respective nominal
voltages after a few moments. The connected fixture or
ballast must be able to safely operate with these higher
voltages. All Sachtler products are designed to meet these
requirements.

2.4 End of discharge voltage
A Belt-Pack® battery is considered completely discharged,
once the voltage has dropped down to 11V with 13.2V
types B1245 and B1270 and down to 25V with 30V types
B3045 and B3070.
To prevent deep discharging, the batteries must not be
discharged beyond this voltage! All Sachtler Batronics will
automatically switch off, once the limit of discharge voltage
has been reached. Sachtler Reporter fixtures R100H and
R250H must be switched off once the red LED on the fixtu-
re flashes! Sachtler fixtures R20H and R50H have neither
an automatic switch-off nor an indicator. With these fixtures
a significant reduction of light output and colour temperatu-
re indicates that the end of discharge voltage has been
reached and the luminaire must be switched off, since
otherwise the battery will be deep discharged. If deep
discharge occurs several times, the life time of the battery
will be reduced considerably.
2.5 Thermal properties
Professional TV lighting fixtures draw high currents from
their connected battery packs. These high currents increa-
se the internal temperature of the battery pack noticeably.
Immediate fast charging may cause damage to the cells.
So allow for cooling down before charging if battery tempe-
rature is increased! Also do not draw high currents from a
battery as long as battery temperature is raised!
Please note: At very low temperatures a battery will
have low capacity.
NiCd batteries must not be charged when they are too hot
(over 50°C/118°F) or too cold (below minus 10°C/14°F). At
room temperature it can take several hours before a bat-
tery which was too hot or too cold can be charged or
discharged again. If not operated or charged within this
temperature range, irreversible damage to the battery may
occur.

2.6 Memory effect
2.6.1 Description
Sachtler NiCd batteries are free of a memory effect
when used through full charge-/discharge cycles in
connection with Sachtler fixtures. Under certain ope-
rating conditions, like permanent charging and/or
over-charging combined with very little discharging,
a reversible loss of capacity may be noticed. This
may also happen if the battery is only discharged at
higher temperatures in the range of 30°C to 50°C
(86°F to 122°F).The full capacity will, however, be
restored after a full discharge down to the end of
discharge voltage (11V, 25V resp.).
2.6.2 Reasons for capacity loss
The memory effect should not be confused with a
capacity loss caused by over-charging or over-hea-
ting since this capacity loss is irreversible. External
short-circuiting of a battery can also cause an irre-
versible loss of capacity which is displayed by volta-
ge loss and capacity reduction during discharging.
2.7 New Belt-Pack® batteries
For safety reasons Sachtler ships Belt-Pack® batteries in
discharged mode. The fully rated capacity will be available
after approximately five full charge-/discharge cycles.
2.8 Storing Belt-Pack® batteries
When storing Sachtler Belt-Pack® batteries please make
sure that the storage temperature is kept between minus
10 °C and 40 °C (14 °F and 104 °F).

2.9 Shipping Belt-Pack® batteries
For safety reasons ship batteries in discharged mode! Also
make sure that temperature is kept between minus 10°C
and 40°C (14°F and 104°F).
2.10 Self discharge and deep discharge
NiCd batteries discharge themselves at a rate of approx.
1% of the rated capacity per day – even if not used. Thus a
fully charged NiCd battery looses 50% of its capacity in
approx. 50 days. After approx. 100 days its voltage has
decreased to the end of discharge voltage: The battery is
virtually empty. Further storage without usage leads to the
deep discharging of the battery.
This status can be eliminated by running the battery
through several charge/discharge cycles. The full rated
capacity will be restored (see 2.6 Memory effect). During
the use it may happen that a battery is not automatically
disconnected at the end of discharge voltage (see 2.4 End
of discharge voltage) and accidentally becomes deep
discharged. If the battery is charged soon afterwards, the
full nominal capacity will be available immediately.
2.11 Power limits for Sachtler Belt-Pack® batteries
Based on the internal wiring and the connectors the power
drawn from Sachtler Belt-Pack® Batteries has to be within
the following limits:
Type max. power max. current
B1245, B1270 130W continuous 10A continuous
200W short term 15A short term
B3045, B3070 360W continuous 12A continuous
600W short term 20A short term
Drawing higher current than listed above may result in a
defective battery.

Is the socket / plug damaged?
Has the battery been properly charged?
Is it exhausted?
Is the socket damaged?
If a Sachtler Speedcharger is used: Is the
temperature sensor defective? (The Spee-
dcharger’s LEDs would clearly signal this
condition.)
Charger is not charging, because battery
is too hot (>50°C (118°F)) or too cold
(<-10°C (14°F)).
Is it exhausted?
Was it over-charged?
Was it discharged at high temperatures?
Is the battery too cold?
