In very large SCADA systems spread over a
wide geographical area, it might be neces-
sary to have alternative communication lines
or back-up communication lines if the pri-
mary communication line is damaged, fails
or needs service.
Connecting routers as shown above can
solve this.
If the routers are configured as logical re-
peaters, they will work as isolating objects
for the substation if failure occurs on the
communication lines. Then the main station
can use the primary communication line for
one part of the network and the back up (re-
dundant communication line) for the other
part of the network.
The universal router module is used for
connecting different channels in
LONWORKS ® networks. A router is an ac-
tive device receiving messages and send-
ing messages.
In large networks the router is therefore
used as a logical repeater, e.g. in situations
when more than two physical repeaters
would be needed. This application mode is
needed where the distance between nodes
exceeds the constraints specified by the
transceiver designer.
Because of the active message processing
by two Neuron ® chips, a delay in transmis-
sion between both sides has to be kept in
mind.
