Keep in mind that the transfer methods described in this
instrucon guide should go smoothly and easily. If you feel
your transfers are cumbersome and heavy, we recommend
you change to another liing aid from Liko’s wide range of
products for liing and moving paents.
HandyTube is not intended for liing or transferring
paents from lying to sing posions. For such needs, we
recommend liing with one of our many sling models.
In this document, the person being moved/transferred is referred to as the paent and the person helping them is referred to
as the caregiver.
Product Descripon
HandyTube is developed by Liko especially to facilitate
paent transfers by reducing fricon. The HandyTube is
manufactured from a low-fricon material that minimizes
fricon between the paent and the bedding, thus reducing
caregiver workload in a number of dierent situaons. It is
an aid for e.g. moving a paent higher up in bed, turning
the paent in bed, as well as moving the paent from bed
to bed/gurney.

Before use, keep the following points in mind:
The HandyTube should, under any circumstances, not be used to li a paent.
A responsible person within your organizaon should decide on a case-by-case basis whether one or more caregivers
are needed.
Plan the transfer operaon so that it can be done as safely and smoothly as possible.
Make sure that the wheels on the wheelchair, bed, gurney, etc., are locked during the transfer operaon.
Use a bed rail when necessary.
The HandyTube material has low fricon and may cause accidents if it is le under the paent, on the oor
or in a wheelchair. Observe cauon during use and always remove the HandyTube immediately aer use.
Put it away or hang it up when it is not in use.
Always work ergonomically. Use the paents ability to acvely parcipate in the operaons. Work calmly and
methodically, stand up and keep your back straight. Raise or lower the bed as necessary. Reduce the lever eect and work
close to the paent.

HandyTube placement
Fold the HandyTube into approx. 30 cm / 12 in long folds
unl the enre length has been folded.
Caregivers grab hold of the boom part of the HandyTube,
with their arms as close to the paent as possible. Use the
other hand as resistance by grabbing hold of the top of
the HandyTube (see the small illustraon). The caregivers
simultaneously pull out the rst fold up under the paent.
TIP! This is facilitated if the hand is held against the maress
during the pulling moon.
Work with straight arms and weight transfer.
Repeat unl the HandyTube is completely under the
paent. The paent can now be moved and turned.
These stages are discussed later in this instrucon
guide.
Place the folded HandyTube under the paent’s feet
and calves with the fold facing down towards the
maress.

Turning in bed using HandyTube Long / Wide
Place the HandyTube as per the previous instrucons
(page 4). Make use of the material’s sliding properes to
move the paent sideways. Push the paent over to one
side of the bed.
Work with the bed at the correct height.
Use the bed rail!
Turn the paent onto their side. Ensure that the paent is in
the middle of the bed before the HandyTube is removed.

underneath unl the HandyTube releases completely.
Carefully remove the
HandyTube.
Using HandyTube Long
Using HandyTube Wide
Posion the HandyTube as per the previous instrucons
(page 4), but begin from the bend of the knee. The
HandyTube must be posioned with the handle strap
perpendicular to the paent. Make use of the material’s
sliding properes to move the paent sideways. Push the
HandyTube under the paent on the side they are to be
turned to, this will make it easier to remove the HandyTube.
Work with the bed at the correct height.
Use the bed rail!
Use the HandyTube handles
to turn the paent onto
their side.
Posion the HandyTube so that it covers the enre length of
the paent. Press down the HandyTube against the maress,
at the same me as it is pushed in under the paent. Try to
posion the HandyTube as far in as possible.
Work with the bed at the correct height.
Use the bed rail!
Alternave method of placement
6www.hillrom.com7EN160188 Rev. 3 • 2020
Posion the HandyTube as per the
previous instrucons (page 4), but
begin from the bend of the knee.
The HandyTube must be placed on
top of the sheet with the handle
strap perpendicular to the paent.
We recommend at least two
caregivers are used for this type
of move. More may be needed,
depending on the paent’s weight
and status.
Grab hold of the HandyTube handles and carefully pull
the paent over to the adjacent bed/gurney. Keep the
surfaces at the same level or, preferably, keep the bed/
gurney to which the paent is being moved slightly
lower! Move the paent to the desired posion.
Pay aenon to the distance between the bed
and the bed/gurney: Ensure that the paent receives
enough support under their body for a safe transfer.
If needed, use a back board to bridge the gap.
Carefully remove
the HandyTube by pulling
it under itself.
Using HandyTube Wide
Posion HandyTube under the
bed sheet. Try to push HandyTube
as far in under the paent as
possible. Ensure that it covers the
enre length of the paent.
We recommend at least two
caregivers are used for this type
of move. More may be needed,
depending on the paent’s weight
and status.
Ensure that the bed sheet is loose on the bed. Grab hold
of the bed sheet and carefully pull the paent over to the
adjacent bed/gurney. Keep the surfaces at the same level
or, preferably, keep the bed/gurney to which the paent
is being moved slightly lower! Move the paent to the
desired posion.
Pay aenon to the distance between the bed and
the bed/gurney: Ensure that the paent receives enough
support under their body for a safe transfer. If needed,
use a back board to bridge the gap.
Carefully remove the
HandyTube by pulling
on the fabric under-
neath unl the enre
HandyTube is released.

Moving between two beds with HandyTube Long / Wide

Moving higher up in bed with HandyTube Short / Wide
With two caregivers
Posion the HandyTube from the paents head down to
the boom under a draw sheet. The caregivers posion
themselves in line with the paents shoulders in a standing
posion and each grab hold of their corner of the draw
sheet. The caregivers move the paent higher up in bed by
transferring their weight to their back leg. The procedure is
repeated unl the paent is in the desired posion.
Keep ergonomics in mind – avoid pulling with your arms!
Raise the end of the bed to further facilitate the move!
With one caregiver
Place HandyTube under the paents head and shoulders. The
paent bends their knees and the caregiver pushes down the
paent’s feet for increased fricon. The paent eases their
weight under their boom, while at the same me “pressing
themselves upward in bed.
This method requires that the paent has some strength/
funcon in their legs and body.
Raise the end of the bed to further facilitate the move!
With HandyTube Short
Using HandyTube Wide
Posion the HandyTube as per the previous instrucons
(page 4), but begin from the knees. Use the HandyTube han-
dles to pull the paent higher up in the bed.
Keep ergonomics in mind – work in a standing posion with
a straight back.
