Therearelimitstothemaximumrelativespeedthattheradarscannercan
measurewhenprocessingDopplertargets.Whenthetargetismovingat
highspeedstheselimitscanresultinastroboscopicvisualeffectknownas
“wagon-wheeling”or“aliasing”.
“Wagon-wheeling”referstoanopticalillusionsimilartothatseeninsome
movies,wherewagonwheelsappeartooccasionallyrotatebackwards.When
usingDopplerradartheeffectoccurswhenthetargetismovingfastandthe
frequencyofthetransmitpulses,whenthetargetisilluminatedbytheradar,
isinsufficienttodistinguishwhetherthetargetismovingtowardsoraway
fromthevessel.
Theresultofthisvisualeffectisthatthedirectionoftargetreturnsfromhigh
speedvesselsmaybedisplayedincorrectly.Consequently,thedisplayed
targetcolorsmaybeinverted,withtargetscoloredredwhentheyshouldbe
green,andviceversa:
Whenthetarget'sspeedismorethan60knotsSpeedOverGround(SOG),
ortherelativespeedbetweenyourvesselandthetargetisgreaterthan120
