distancefromanycompasses.Typicallythisdistanceshouldbeatleast1m(3ft)inalldirections.

Howeverforsomesmallervesselsitmaynotbepossibletolocatetheproductthisfarawayfroma

DopplerRadartechnologymakesiteasiertotrackmovingtargetswithsigniﬁcantgroundspeed

exceeding3knots.Itcanalsoassistintheautomaticacquisitionofdangeroustargets(ARPA).

TypicallyDopplerRadarworksbestwithobjectsthataremovingdirectlytowardsorawayfromthe

vessel.IncombinationwithTrueMotionmode,theDopplerRadarcanhighlightonlythosetargets

thataremovingrelativetothevessel(e.g.otherboats,butnotlandorbuoys,forexample).

DopplerRadarworksbytransmittingamicrowavesignalwhichisthenreﬂectedoffadesiredmoving

targetatadistance.Byanalyzinghowtheobject'smotionhasalteredthefrequencyofthereturned

signal,theDopplerRadarcaninterpretthevariationtoprovidehighlyaccuratemeasurementsofa

target'sdirectionoftravel,relativetotheRadarscanner.

conditionsandvisibilitycanmaketargettrackingdifﬁcult.Additionally,itisnotalwayseasyto

interprettheinformationdisplayedbytraditionalRadartechnology.WiththeintegrationofDoppler

information,theprocessofmatchingon-screenradarreturnswithreal-worldobjectsbecomes

amuchsimplertask.
