19
3 Intended use
eCore 3kW (reference no. 9102900221) is the control unit of the eSystem energy
management system. eCore 3kW supplies connected power consuming devices
with 230 V and can simultaneously charge the following 12 V batteries:
Lead starter batteries
Lead gel batteries
Maintenance-free batteries
Absorbed glass mat (AGM) batteries

4 Technical description
4.1 General description
The device can only be connected to the following voltage sources:
12 Vg batteries
230 Vw mains voltage
The maximum power that can be taken from the AC power supply is adjustable
and is limited by the maximum mains current “MAX AC IN” (maximum 25 A)
Vehicle charging system (DC kit function)
Generator (ePower)
Each connected voltage can be converted to:
230 Vw / 50 Hz
12 V g
The device can be used as follows:
As an automatic charger (3-stage charging characteristic)
As a sine wave inverter: the device produces a pure 230 V output voltage
Power Sharing: the device powers a connected power consuming device with
230 V and simultaneously charges a battery
Uninterruptible power supply (UPS): the device powers connected power
consuming devices from a battery when the mains voltage fails
Generator, if an ePower T generator is connected
The device is operated via a control panel that has the following main functions:
Enabling and disabling the eCore system
Setting operating parameters
Monitoring operating parameters (such as battery voltage, output voltage)
Setting system parameters

fig. 1,
page 3
Explanation/function
1 House battery connection
This connection is designed for a capacity of 2 kW.
2 Vehicle battery connection.
This connection is designed for 150 A.
3 AUX connection
This connection is for air conditioners without a CAN bus.
Two voltage free contacts provide information about the DC kit status. They
are activated when the DC kit switch is open due to low voltage thus
activating energy-saving mode of the air conditioner.
4 Serial AUX connection
This connection is for service purposes only.
5 RJ11 connection of a battery sensor
The battery sensor allows the battery temperature to be be measured and the
battery charger parameters to be adapted to the current conditions.
6 CAN BUS connections
The control panel and other eSystem components can be connected on
these three connections.
7 Connection of an eSystem generator (such as an ePower T generator)
812Vg connection
This connection is protected against short-circuit and overcurrent and it is
used for the connection of 12 Vg devices. The maximum current is 20 A.
9 Trickle charger connection
This connection is used to trickle charge the vehicle battery with 10 A. It can
be useful if the DC kit is not connected to the eCore.
10 D+ signal
The D+ signal comes from the vehicle charging system and informs the eCore
that the vehicle engine is running. It enables the DC kit function. If the
D+ signal is not connected, the DC kit function will not operate.

13 230 Vw mains input voltage
This connection is suitable for a supply voltage of 230 V / 50 Hz and an input
current of up to 25 A.
14 230 Vw output voltage with a 25 A protection (Short Break Output)
This connection serves as the connection for 230 Vw power consuming
devices. It is protected against overload and short circuit by thermal
protection switches.
15 230 Vw output voltage (eCore Output)
This connection serves as the connection for 230 Vw power consuming
devices. It is connected to the eCore inverter and controlled by the eCore
control logic. It is protected against overload and short circuit by the eCore
control electronic and the thermal protection switch.
16 Thermal protection switch
This switch will trip if the mains input current exceeds 25 A. It must be
activated manually when the current falls below 25 A again.

4.3 Internal components
Description of items 1 to 16: see chapter “Connections and controls” on page 21.
No. in
fig. 3,
page 4
Explanation/function
17 230 V relay
This relay disconnects the eCore power components from the mains voltage.
The contacts are closed if the eCore logic allows and if the mains voltage is
within tolerance. They are opened when the mains voltage is out of tolerance.
18 3 kW inverter
This inverter has the following tasks:
Generate 230 V / 50 Hz voltage from the 12 Vg supply when the mains
voltage is not connected or is out of tolerance.
Generate 230 V / 50 Hz voltage from the 12 Vg supply in order to
operate in parallel with the mains voltage (Power Sharing).
Supply of the DC bus and the DC/DC converter in order to operate the
eCore as a PFC rectifier (Power Factor Correction) and to charge the
battery.
19 DC bus
This is the common point of all the eCore power sources, and it is not
accessible from outside. The voltage on the DC bus is between 350 and
380 Vg.
20 2 kW rectifier
This rectifier converts the 3-phase voltage of a connected ePower T generator
into DC voltage that supplies the DC bus.
21 DC/DC converter
The DC/DC converter is divided into two parts:
The up-converter transforms the 12 Vg voltage of the battery into DC bus
voltage that supplies the inverter (max. 2 kW).
The down-converter transforms the DC bus voltage into 12 Vg voltage
that charges the house battery (max. 100 A).
22 eCore control logic
The control logic manages all the power elements, communication and all
eCore functions.

4.4 Control panel
The control panel operates in three modes:
Normal mode:
The display is switched on and all the LEDs of the LED light bars are lit from the
bottom to the current value.
Screensaver mode:
The display is switched off and only the LED that indicates the current value lights
up on the LED light bars.
Standby mode:
The display and all LEDs are switched off; only the standby LED flashes. In standby
mode, the system consumes only 2 mA.
When the main switch is switched to the “I” or “II” position, the control panel
switches to normal mode and opens the mode selection menu.
If no key is pressed within a minute, the control panel switches to standby mode. To
exit standby mode, press the SET button for 1 s.
Selecting an operating mode activates the eCore. If no key is pressed within a
minute, the control panel switches to screensaver mode. Press any key to exit
screensaver mode.
23 Earth relay
If the earth relay is switched on, the neutral conductor (N) of the inverter
output is connected internally to the protective earth (PE/GND).
If the earth relay is off, there is no connection between the neutral conductor
(N) and the protective earth (PE/GND).
Observe the regulations that apply in your country for this setting.
24 DC Kit switch
The DC Kit switch allows the house battery and the vehicle battery to be
switched in parallel. The DC Kit switch is closed when the D+ signal is high-
active (vehicle engine is turned on) and the vehicle battery has sufficient
supply power from the vehicle charging system. The DC Kit switch is open
when the D+ signal is low-active (vehicle engine is turned off).
