PREFACE

1. INTRODUCTION

This manual is part of the documentation set that is delivered with your EchoStar Digital

Satellite Receiver (motorized models). This manual gives an explanation and an instruction

on the use of the EchoNAV user interface.

This manual describes all features of the EchoNAV user interface family for the:

DVR-7000 HDD, DVR-5000 HDD.

EchoNAV is a family of user interfaces which are dedicated for a specific range of digital

satellite receivers. The EchoNAV user interface consists of:

■ EchoNAV HDD, for the receivers that have a hard disk drive;

■ EchoNAV Motorized, for the receivers that have an internal positioner;

■ EchoNAV Fixed, for the receivers that have only fixed dish and DiSEqC 1.2 capabilities.

Every digital satellite receiver is equipped with different options. Some options are related to

the EchoNAV user interface, others are related to physical options as Common Interface

slots, embedded (Viaccess) smart card reader, display or not, etc.

All sections are applicable to your receiver unless otherwise indicated by the respective

option.

2. WHAT IS ECHONAV?

2.1. THREE WAYS WE MADE SATELLITE TV EASIER FOR YOU

Since EchoStar started making satellite TV receivers about twenty years ago we've been

getting suggestions about how we can make things better.

In the early 1980s the good channels on satellite were spread across many satellites and

going from one channel to the next was too complicated for many people. We thought we

could make it a lot simpler by building the antenna positioner control unit into we invented the

first satellite receiver with an integrated antenna positioner.

Then a few years later when scrambling started on some channels you had to hook up an

additional decoder box. We figured we could make it easier to use (and cheaper) by putting

the decoder into the receiver. So we came up with the first Integrated Receiver Decoder.

(These days most receivers sold throughout the world have some kind of decoder built in.)

In the early 1990s the number of channels started to grow rapidly from just over a dozen

worthwhile channels to several dozen to well over a hundred. In 1993 EchoStar introduced its

flagship model LT-8700 set the standard in the industry with its powerful easy to use features.

One of these features was to create customized lists of channels which allowed you to

categorize channels according to their type. So for example you could put all news channels

together in one list, and all film channels in another, and all sports channels in a third.

Considering that there were over 150 channels in total this made it easy to locate the

channels you wanted to watch.

2.2. 12 ½ HOURS OF NON-STOP ZAPPING?

Fast forward to 2002. A basic satellite TV installation today receives over 1,000 TV channels.

More ambitious installations offer up close to 3,000 TV channels and at least 1,000 radio

channels. Amazing. Many consumers these days enjoy dozens of movie channels, perhaps

six or eight worthwhile sports channels, a handful of good music TV channels, and of course

more news than any news junkie can cope with.

That we have progressed from a few dozen channels to a few thousand in just over a decade

is a phenomenal development. But how are people dealing with so many channels? Do you

watch TV in a different way today than ten years ago?

The answer, as we heard loud and clear from all your letters, e-mails and phone calls, is that

the two most frequently pressed keys on every remote control are still channel-up and

channel-down. There may be two dozen different keys on the remote but after pressing the

power-on key most of the time it is just zapping through the channel list.

And zapping, and zapping and ..... zapping. If you spend just 15 seconds on each channel

and zap non-stop it will take you 12 ½ hours to go through 3,000 TV channels. Besides the

wear and tear on your up / down keys, not to mention your thumb, this is nobody's idea of fun

especially since most of these channels are completely uninteresting to you. In fact there may

be no more than 200 or 300 channels worth watching (only about one hour of continuous

zapping .....).

There was one other change and that was that with so many channels you wanted the

possibility to zap through a single type of channel. For example if there is some breaking

news story you might want to zap from one news channel to the next to the next without

seeing cartoon channels, or music TV channels. Similarly when you want to relax for the

evening you want to go though your movie channels without bumping into a football match or

the latest reports from Wall Street.

2.3. ZAPPING ONLY WHAT YOU WANT TO ZAP: ECHONAV

To deal with all these channels and the changing way that people watch TV, the software

engineers at EchoStar have resurrected the tried and true channel list approach of the

venerable LT-8700 and enhanced it to deal with the demanding requirements of today's

world. We call this new system EchoNAV and this is included in all of our new line of

receivers.

EchoNAV gives you eight lists for your TV channels and eight lists for your radio channels. So

now for example you can put all your sports channels into a single list. When you want to

watch sports just select your that list and zap till you find the match you want.

If you want to keep the kids entertained then pick the children's programming list, give them

the remote control, and fear not that they may wander where they ought not to.

Looking for an update on some news item? Zap your news channels list till you come across

it. You won't be wasting your time flicking past all the general entertainment channels in your

quest to find your information.

But we also realized that in some households it makes more sense to divide up the channels

per person - ‘John's List’ or ‘Mom's List’ for example. So in EchoNAV we give you complete

flexibility in renaming each of the eight lists (you use an on-screen keyboard to create the

name you want), and with a capacity of 250 channels in each list, there's more than enough

room to hold all your favorites. In most households you can give one list to each person and

still have a few leftover (make a neighbor happy?)

Having lots of lists is particularly nice in radio mode. Put your pop music channels into one list

and your classical radio into another. Then zap. It is striking how much nicer it is when you

don't constantly tune to a type of music that you don't really want to listen too.

2.4. HUNDREDS OF HOURS OF VIDEO RECORDINGS

The power and user-friendliness of EchoNAV is hardly limited to organizing and zapping lists

of TV and radio channels. For those satellite receivers with a build-in hard disk drive such as

the DVR-7000, it is possible to record many hours of TV programs. It is much simpler to

record on a DVR than it used to be on a normal VCR. Just press the record button and you

instantly record the channel you are watching. The simplicity of setting a timer to record

something in the future is even more striking: in the Electronic Program Guide screen just

highlight the program you want to record (up to 4 weeks in advance!), choose the timer

function, and the start time, stop time and program name will all be automatically set.

Initial feedback shows that people are recording far more frequently than they ever used to

with a VCR. Now consider that the capacity of hard-disk drives is growing rapidly. It is

expected that within a few years total recording capacity could reach over two hundred hours.

That's a lot of content - several shelves of video-cassettes in today's terms.

So now comes the question of how to file all these recordings in such a way that you can find

what you want to watch without having to employ a librarian! Again the answer is the

EchoNAV lists. Again eight lists are dedicated to hold your recordings, and what's more, when

setting a timer you can even specify the list in which you want the recording to be stored. So

for example you can make sure the film recordings are stored in the Film recordings list, or

that football matches are stored in the sports recordings list. Children's recordings can also

be grouped together so that they can browse freely without worries - somewhat like letting

them loose in the children's section of the bookstore.

2.5. EIGHT PLAYLISTS FOR YOUR DIGITAL MUSIC JUKEBOX

Throwing a party but you don't want to be bothered with changing the CDs after every song?

EchoStar's DVR-7000 has a digital audio jukebox which can store up to 500 songs. Five

hundred songs is somewhat more than 15 hours of music and while that is plenty to cover

most parties the real beauty is again in the lists.

In this case EchoNAV gives you eight playlists that you can fill up with the songs you want to

listen to. Pick them from your master list by album, or group or type of music and drop them

into the play list in whatever order you want. Create playlists for dance parties, romantic

dinners, or just about any occasion when you want to hear top quality music without

constantly having to change the CD.

2.6. POWERFUL AND USER-FRIENDLY: ECHONAV

EchoNAV is the most powerful and easy to use satellite receiver software available today.

Whether you want to zap through sports channels to find a good football match, or zap

through your film channels to find a good comedy, you will find that EchoNAV makes your TV

watching experience more enjoyable.

If you have one of the EchoStar satellite receivers with digital recording capabilities and digital

audio jukeboxes, then you will find that EchoNAV makes it easy to find the files you want and

enjoy them in the way that you want.

For the more advanced user, the EchoNAV user interface is packed with lots of clever and

innovative features.

have finished the initial installation, these pages are accessible through the icons in the menu

bar which is in the initial setup not shown.

From the next step onwards, the procedure is divided in different configurations. The

configurations are; Fixed, DiSEqC1.2, Motorized and SMATV.

■ Fixed means set up a single dish or multiple dishes with DiSEqC1..4 switch;

■ DiSEqC 1.2 means set up a moveable dish according the DiSEqC 1.2 spec;

■ Motorized means set up a moveable dish (motor/actuator by positioner);

■ SMATV means set up for television distribution (cable network in buildings).

do so might cause damage to your motorized dish installation or other properties.

level and quality;

d. press thekey to select the location bar;

e. press the OK key, note that the saved position of

the satellite is shown.

30. Repeat the procedure for the middle and Western

Satellite.

31. Set the West limit (key), refer to step 25.

32. Go to the Autosat field.

33. On the RCU, press the OK key to advance.

1.3. PARENTAL LOCK MENU

The parental lock menu is initial accessible with the factory default PIN code 0000. For future

use, you are requested to change the PIN code to your own personal code.

This sub menu contains two menu pages. These menu pages are:
