Light Matters Demo Kit – Getting Started

Congratulations on receiving your Savant / USAI

Lighting “Light Matters” Demo Kit. You are steps

away from demonstrating the benefits of this

exciting offering.

This demo can either be integrated into a fuller

experience with your other Savant solutions or

used standalone. The instructions below highlight

the steps required to make this fully functional.

Physical Setup & Wiring

Unbox and install the S2 Host and

Netgear Router on the keyhole mounts

located on the rear of the cube.

For setup purposes, connect the

Internet/WAN port of the Netgear

Router to an internet-connected

network.

Using the included ethernet cables,

connect both the DMX Controller and

S2 Host to LAN ports on the Netgear

router.

The DMX controller will need to update

its firmware over the internet during

this initial phase.

Connect all devices to power, starting

with the Router.

Unveil the Finish Mosaic from the

package and slide into the face of the

cube until it sits tight against the back

wall.

This will represent the main canvas of

your demonstration, but you can also

place other swatches and objects

within the cube to show the effect of

dynamic lighting.

Host Software Upgrade

In Savant Application Manager,

download the Runtime Installer for S2

Host and upgrade the software to 9.0.2

(or newer) with System Monitor.

While System Monitor is open, highlight

the host and use Command-C to copy

the UID.

Blueprint Configuration

For convenience, download and open

the sample configuration created in

version 9.0.2 of Blueprint before

moving forward.

Double-click on the Host to open

Inspector and paste the UID into the

appropriate field using Command-V.

In the same window, navigate to

Resources using the Show drop-down

menu. Ensure the Lighting Controller

Source is enabled.

Generate Services and navigate to

Manage Lighting on the far right on the

main menu bar.

Open the Discovery window by clicking

the side menu button (highlighted in

blue).

Click Discover to search for your DMX

Controller.

Right-click on the discovered controller

and “Add to Configuration”.

The DMX Controller will then be added

to the configuration in the second

information window.

Collapse the Discovery window by

clicking the side menu icon again.

With the DMX Controller selected,

choose Web Configure to launch the

OLA lighting configuration.

Navigate to Savant Lighting in the

Universes menu and select the RDM

tab at the top of the screen.

Click on the magnifying glass on the

left of the tool bar to discover the

various DMX devices, including your

demo fixture and the controller itself.

You may select the fixture and name it

under “Device Label” for later.

Click on “DMX Personality” and confirm

that it is set to RGBW.

Close the browser window when

finished.

Back in the Lighting Manager, click

Connect and Start Scan to import the

demo fixture into Blueprint.

Create a Smart Group using the +

button at the bottom of the screen and

drag your fixture into the group. The

final result is shown below.

Click Sync in the bottom right to

populate the Lighting Data table so the

fixture shows up in your app.

At a minimum, enable the Loads

checkbox and click Sync.

Close the data table, Generate Services,

Save and Upload to the Host.

Savant Pro App & TrueImage Setup

You may now connect to your

system from your Mobile device

using the WiFi Credentials marked

on the Netgear Router.

Open your Savant Pro App and

connect to the system, binding it to

your account.

Navigate to the Living Room

Lighting Service and access the

drawer for the Recess 3 Demo

fixture using the arrow on the right.

Tap on the Camera icon to walk

through the TrueImage setup of the

fixture so you can show this

dynamic feature within the app.

Once complete, you may want to

create some favorite color and

temperature settings to highlight

the range of the solution.

You may tap on the RGBW values

on the Slider interface to pull up a

view to make exact adjustments,

should you wish.

Save these as favorites using the +

in the top right of the screen or

capture them using Savant Scenes.

Demo Scene Examples

To properly demonstrate the capabilities of the Savant USAI fixtures, you

will want to create a few color favorites or scenes. Here are some examples

that you are welcome to adjust:

Sample Demo Script

Start with 3000K Optimal

Presenter:

Thank you all for coming today and taking time out of your schedules.

I’m ___________ the ___________ at __________.

We all recognize that lighting is going to be an important part of your

project(s), and typically any technology conversation only covers the

basic dimming of these fixtures via a lighting control system. Let’s

take a step back and explore the more basic question “Why does

quality light matter?”, “Why should you invest in quality light?”

Light is everywhere, Light is expected, Light is taken for granted….but

it doesn’t have to be.

Over 90 percent of residential projects do not have a lighting

designer on the project. It is typically an architect drawing circles on a

Reflected Ceiling Plan and handing that over to the Electrical

contractor.

Most often the client is going to end up with Static White lighting at a

warm white color temperature, like what you see here.

As you can see, it’s a nice warm light, the color’s look good, and there

is plenty of light to see by, but now I’d like you to imagine you’re

sitting down to a nice dinner or unwinding after a long day, you’re

going to want to dim the lights.

Switch to 3000K Dim

Presenter:

You’ll notice that instead of a candle-light like atmosphere you would

imagine, the light has stayed at the same color temperature, which

isn’t what people expect from traditional incandescent sources.

However, when using USAI’s warm glow dimming technology, you

have another option.

Switch back and forth between Warm Dim and 3000K Dim

I’ll switch back to the static white version now.

And now back to the warm glow. If you had an option between the

two which would you pick?

Presenter:

Light isn’t just something to allow things to be seen, Light is essential

to create mood in a space, but light also has a critical impact on your

health. Who uses night mode on their phone or tablets, or have seen

that feature?

What night mode is doing is limiting the amount of blue light and

intensity from your screen that you are exposed to prior to going to

bed. This allows your body to produce Melatonin which regulated the

sleep wake cycle. The same thing they’re doing on the Micro scale of

your phone is possible to do to an entire space with the right

technology.

Demonstrate Color Temperature Selections in next section. Transition from Warm

White up to Sunlight and back down to Sunset.

Imagine you’re waking up in the morning, the light has already starts

dim and warm before you wake up, gradually increasing in intensity

and color as the sun rises to mimic daylight. By noon it’s at its peak

color helping you work efficiently and then it slowly begins to warm

up in the afternoon as you wind down your day. You make dinner,

watch some TV, and by the time you’re ready for bed, the light is

already set to match and as a result, you get better sleep which

results in significant productivity and health benefits

Shift back to 3000K Optimal

We’ve talked about the ability of light to set the mood in a space the

and the health benefits, and even just provide the ability to see the

space but light is also critical to HOW you see. Materials reflect

certain wavelengths of light and absorb others; an apple is red

because it reflects Red light but absorbs the other colors. That means

that each material has its own “best light”.

We mentioned the standard lighting choice for residences was going

to be a warm white color, what we refer to as “3000K White”. But

what if when specifying the lighting someone in the process said,

“Hey, what finishes are they using? Oh, that steel kitchen and quartz

backdrop would look really crisp with a slightly cooler light.

Or maybe they say, “That warm oak and patterned couch would look

really nice with a little more warmth in the light.

Suddenly those finishes that your client spent hours picking out, and

thousands of extra dollars to have are able to look their best.

I’ll go back to the typical setting now, and then switch back so you

can see the change again.

Now you can custom tailor the light not only for mood, the

occupant’s health, and the task at hand, but can dial it in to optimize

what will make the occupants and the design look like a million bucks

for a fraction of that.

The way USAI is dialing in these exact color mixes is by using white,

red, green, and blue LED die on a chip that they custom designed

from the ground up for optimal color mixing. The bonus of that is

your clients can mix things up a little bit depending upon their needs.

Perhaps they’re having a party and would love to make their great

room feel like a Miami night club.
