INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
MINIMUM TENSION JUMPER-LOOP SPLICES FOR
AAC, AAAC ACAR & ACSR CONDUCTORS
Jumper Loop Splices are marked with the conductor diameter range, die size, minimum press size,
catalog number and date code. Uni-Grip® style splices are factory-filled. Conventional style splices
are normally field-filled but may pre-filled as indicated by catalog number suffix “PC”.
1. Prior to installation the conductor must be clean, straight and in-lay.
2. Mark the conductor with tape wrap, at a distance from end equal to the insertion depth. The
insertion depth is the distance from the open end of the splice to the edge of the knurled ring.
3. With a clean stainless steel wire brush (V-brush type recommended), aggressively brush the
conductor insertion length on the first splice side to be compressed. Immediately apply a
generous coat of FARGO Joint Compound (Type UJC or HTJC) over the just brushed conductor
strands.
4. Remove the protective plastic and any end plug from the splice.
5. If splice (conventional type catalog 40 series) is not pre-filled, use caulking gun to inject FARGO
joint compound into splice bore (1/2 the amount in table below into each splice side. Uni-Grip®
splices (catalog JLS series) are pre-filled at the factory.
DO NOT REMOVE ANY FACTORY-FILLED JOINT COMPOUND FROM SPLICE TUBE
6. Select the compression die set indicated on the splice. Mount die halves in press and lubricate die
faces and crimp zone with die lubricant stick, clean oil or clean plastic bag material. (If plastic used
as lubricant, ensure that it wraps completely around the splice tube, fully covering both die face
during each compression).
7. Insert conductor to insertion depth marked above, rotating splice to spread joint compound around
conductor end. Make first crimp at knurled ring and continue compressions to the open end.
Overlap each crimp by an amount necessary to prevent the formation of ridges between adjacent
crimps. Be sure that full die closure occurs with each crimp. To prevent bowing, keep splice body
well lubricated during crimp operation, and be sure that the terminal is firmly seated in one die half
while dies are closing. Remove excess joint compound as it is expelled during final compressions.
8. Repeat procedure for opposite conductor/splice end. Remove flash from the splice body and file
for smooth appearance.
JUMPER LOOP SPLICES ARE MINIMUM TENSION CONNECTORS
DO NOT APPLY TENSION TO THE CONDUCTOR PRIOR TO COMPLETE COMPRESSION
