GROHE Sense water sensor detects the presence of water, tracks temperature and
humidityandalertsyouautomaticallywhenanissueisdetected.Itcanalsotrigger
GROHESenseGuardtoautomaticallyshutwatero.
GROHE SENSE APP – PERSONAL WATER MANAGEMENT APP
GROHESenseappisyourcontroltoolforallGROHESensewatersecuritydevices.
The app shows the latest status and measurements of the devices, delivers alarms
andwarnings,letsyouchangethesettingsofthedevicesandmanageyouraccount
preferences.
1. INTRODUCTION
CongratulationsonyournewGROHESensewatersecuritysystem!Nowyourhouseis
equippedwithareliablesolutionforeveryday,whereyounolongerhavetoworryabout
water damage.
Thesystemconsistsoftwosmartdevices,GROHESenseandGROHESenseGuard,and
asmartphoneappGROHESense.Eachofthedevicescanbeusedindividually,ifmore
devicesareinstalledinproperty,theyallworktogethertoprovideahigherlevelofwater
security.
GROHE SENSE GUARD – THE SMART WATER CONTROLLER
GROHESenseGuardwatercontrollerisinstalledonthemainswaterpipe.Itliterallysees
allthewaterpassingby,checksforunusualwateruseandtrackswaterconsumption.
Whenitdetectsaleak,itcanshutothewatersupplyautomaticallytoreduceconse-
quentialdamage.Itdetectsevenverysmallleaks,sothatyoucantakeaction,beforethe
leak becomes bigger.

Todownloadtheapp,opentheGooglePlayStoreorAppleAppStoreonyour
smartphone and search for “GROHE Sense”, or scan the QR code below.
• GROHESenseappiscompatiblewithoperatingsystemversionsAndroid6.0+,
AppleiOS10+.
• During the installation process, the requested permissions need to be granted to
theapptofunctioncorrectly,especiallythepermissiontosendpushnotications
toalertyouincaseofdetectedleaks.
• It is possible to download and run the app on a tablet, but for the best user
experience we recommend the use on smartphones.

1.Ontheintroductoryscreen,tapthe“Signup”buttontostart.
2. Fill in the registration form and tap the “Sign up” button.
3.Gotoyoure-mailaccounttoopentheautomatice-mailsenttoyou.Activateyour
accountbyclickingonthelink“Conrme-mailaddress”.
FromnowonyouruseraccountisreadyandyoucanlogintotheGROHESenseapp.
Makesuretorememberyoure-mailaddressandpassword.
CAN I CONNECT THE DEVICES TO MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS?
CAN I USE MY ACCOUNT ON MULTIPLE SMARTPHONES?
GROHESenseandGROHESenseGuardcanbelinkedonlytooneaccountintheapp.
Ifyouwouldliketoaccesstheaccountonmultipledevices,thisispossible–youcanbe
logged into the GROHE Sense app with the same account on multiple smartphones in
parallel.Sameinformationwilldisplayonallphones–dataisstoredintheGROHESense
Cloud,notonyourmobiledevice.
NOTE:
• The password needs to be at least
10 characters in length and contain
one small and one capital letter, one
number, one special character.
• The activation link in the e-mail is
validfor24hours.Afterexpiration
ofthistimeperiod,youcantrigger
anewactivationlink.Forthis,you

personalinstallationguidebytappingthebutton“UseplanningID”.
• For experts only: ContinuewithoutaplanningIDbytappingthebutton
“Connect now”.
4. Enteranameforyourdevice,andassignittoahouseandaroominthehouse.
Ifyouhaven’tcreatedahouseoraroomyet,youwillbeautomaticallyrequested.
Tap the button “Next”.
5. ActivateyourdeviceforWi-Fiintegrationaccordingtotheinstructionson
the screen.
• Plug in GROHE Sense Guard, wait a moment, and then press the “CONNECTION”
button.Thedevicestartsashingblueandtheconnectionbuttonlightchangesfrom
orange to blue. The device remains available for Wi-Fi connection for 10 minutes.
• Ifyourdevicedoesnotstartashingblue,itisnotreadyforWi-Fiintegration.
Trytoresetthedevice.

networktoconnectyourdevice.
• If no Wi-Fi networks are shown, this might indicate a device malfunction. In this
case contact the GROHE customer support.
Youwillreceiveanoticationwhenyourdeviceissuccessfullyconnected.Itmighttake
a short time for the device to appear on the overview screen.

outall3batteries,wait30seconds,insertthebatteriesagainandyourGROHE
Sense is available for Wi-Fi connection for 5 minutes again.
• Ifyourdevicedoesnotstartashingblue,itisnotreadyforWi-Fiintegration.Tryto
reset the device.

OVERLAPPING WI-FI NETWORKS
POTENTIALPROBLEM:
Multiplewireless
networks are overlapping in one area.
Everyrouterautomaticallyselects
and uses a channel. The channels
arenumbered1to11.Indensely
populated areas, networks that are
usingthesamechannelmayoverlap.
TEST:
The Wi-Fi testing app will show
youwhichchannelsareusedmost
heavily.
SOLUTION:
Manuallychangethe
channelthatyourrouteruses.Select
achannelthatisnottooheavily
used.Tomakethischange,readyour
router’s manual.
TOO MANY DEVICES
POTENTIALPROBLEM:
There are too
manydevicesusingthesamewireless
network. This can slow down the
wirelessnetwork’sperformance–
particularlyifusersareconstantly
downloading or streaming videos.
TEST:
TheWi-Fitestingappshowsyou
howfastyourwirelessnetworkis.
SOLUTION:
Install a router with a
highercapacity.
2.2.3. WHAT TO DO IF THE DEVICES DON’T CONNECT
STEP 1: CHECK WHETHER YOU HAVE SUFFICIENT
WIRELESS NETWORK COVERAGE
Theremaybeaproblemwithyourwirelessnetworkcoverage.Seebelowforsome
potentialcausesandsolutions.Anappfortestingyourwirelessnetworkmaybeauseful
waytoidentifyanyproblems(e.g.Android:Wi-Fianalyzer,iOS:Wi-FiSweetSpots).
DISTANCE
POTENTIALPROBLEM:
The device is too
far from the router.
TEST:
Checktheperformanceofyour
wirelessnetworkasyoumovefurther
awayfromyourrouter.
SOLUTION:
Tosolvethisproblem,you
can either install a repeater or a new
routeroeringenhancedperformance.
OBSTRUCTIONS
POTENTIALPROBLEM:
Obstructions such
as thick walls or closed doors weaken
the wireless network signal.
TEST:
Testtheperformanceofyour
wireless network on one side of the
wall or with closed doors and compare
it with the performance on the other
side of the wall or with open doors.
SOLUTION:
You can use powerline
adapters, which transmit the wireless
network’s signal along the building’s
existing electrical wiring.

SUFFICIENT, THERE MAY BE A PROBLEM WITH
YOUR ROUTER SETTINGS
ARE YOU USING A WIRELESS NETWORK WITH
A FREQUENCY OF 2.4 GHZ?
In order to be able to integrate the Sense device into
yourwirelessnetwork,thenetworkneedstousea
frequencyof2.4GHz.Thedevicewillnotworkwitha
frequencyof5.0GHz.Youcanviewandchangethe
frequencyinyourrouter’ssettings.
IS YOUR PRIVATE WIRELESS NETWORK
SECURED WITH WPA/WPA2?
GROHE Sense does not work with open wireless
networks. It requires a wireless network that is secured
with WPA or WPA2. Your private wireless network
thereforeneedstobeprotectedbyapasswordthat
has at least eight characters.
IS MAC FILTERING ACTIVATED?
MACfilteringisamethodforprotectingwireless
networks. If it is activated, the wireless network router
willonlygiveapprovaltoknown/registereddevices.
MAClteringisnotnormallyactivatedbydefault.
Itusuallyneedstobesetupmanually.Ifyouhave
activatedMACltering,pleasedeactivateitoraddthe
MACaddressoftheGROHESensetoyourrouter’slist.
TondouttheMACaddressofyourGROHESense,
downloadtheappfortestingyourwirelessnetworkandinitiatethedevice’sintegration
mode(blueashingLED)byinsertingthebatteries.Thenconnectthedevicetoyour
smartphone.TheappwilldisplaytheMACaddressofyourdevice.
OTHER POSSIBLE REASONS:
• Aretheports443(HTTPS)and80(HTTP)open?
• IsDHCPactivatedonyourrouter?
• DoestheroutersupportIPv4?

Ifallfails,performthefollowingtesttoidentifyiftheconnectivityerrororiginatesfrom
theGROHEproductorfromtherouter:activateaWi-Fihotspotonasecondsmartphone.
TrytoconnecttheGROHEproducttothisWi-Fihotspot,insteadofyourhomeWi-Fi
network.Ifconnectionisestablishedsuccessfully,thereasonforyourconnectivityissue
originatesfromyourrouter.

Firmwareisthesoftwareinthedevicethatcontrolsitsfunctions.GROHEstrongly
recommendsthatyoualwaysinstallthelatestrmware–thisistheonlywaytomake
useofthefullrangeofproductfunctionsandthelatestimprovements.Mostimportantly,
everynewrmwarereleasehasapositiveimpactonthelevelofprotectionagainst
water damage. First update should be done right after connecting the device to the Wi-Fi
networkforthersttime.
Toinstallthelatestversionofrmwareonyourdevice,followthesesteps.Dependingon
thecurrentrmwareversiononyourdevice,youmightbeaskedtogotoyourGROHE
SenseGuardandactivateitfortheupdate:
1. TapOKafteryoureceivethemessage“Firmwareupdateavailable”oropenthe
overviewscreenbytappingtheiconofahouseinthenavigationbar.Tapthegreen
button“Installrmware”ifdisplayedunderyourGROHESenseGuard.Ifthebutton
doesnotappearontheoverviewscreenanymore,youcanalwaysgotothedevice
preferences (tap on a device, scroll to the bottom of the page and tap on the button
“Preferences”)andscrolldowntothermwaresection.
2. Inallcases,proceedbytappingthe“Startnow”button.
3. (onlyiftheappshowsyouthisstep)UnplugyourGROHESenseGuardandplugit
in again after 5 seconds. In the app, tap the button “Next” to continue.
4. Intheapp,tapthebutton“Installnow”.Waituntilyourdeviceturnstothe
updatemode.ThisisindicatedbyagreenashingLEDlightabovethe
“CONNECTION” button.
5. (onlyiftheappshowsyouthisstep)Pressthe“CONNECTION”buttononyour
GROHESenseGuardforatleast3secondsuntilthewholedeviceashesgreen.
Thermwareupdatetakesacoupleofminutes,dependingonyourinternetconnection.
Youwillreceiveanoticationwhenitissuccessfullynished.
WHAT TO DO IF THE FIRMWARE UPDATE FAILED?
Wait at least 20 minutes and then repeat the process again. If this does not work, contact
the GROHE customer support.

COSTS TO RECEIVE REALISTIC ESTIMATES
Watermanagementsettingsletyoudenetheinputcosts,whichareusedtocalculate
yourwaterandenergyconsumptioncostestimates.
Thedefaultpricesarebasedonaveragesindierentcountriesandareusedtocalculate
waterandenergycosts.Selectyourheatingtypetoobtaintheaverageenergycostsfor
heating water.
Ifyourpersonalwaterorheatingcostsdierfromtheaveragevalue,youcanadjust
these values to receive a more accurate cost estimate.
Toaccess“Watermanagement”,followthesesteps:
1. Gotoyouraccountbytappingtheiconofapersoninthenavigationbar.
2. Select a house.
3. Tap on the option “Water management”.
4. Onthe“Watermanagement”screen,youcan:
• Viewandedityourwatercosts
• Viewandedityourenergycosts
• Viewandedityourheatingtype
• Resetyourpersonalizedvaluestothepresetprices
Youcanaccessandeditthesecostsatanytimeinfuture.Ifyoumakechangesinthe
denedvalues,theywillimpactthecalculationfromthedateofchanges,butdonothave
retroactive impact on past values.
NOTE:GROHESenseGuardisnotacertiedwatermeteringdevice.Measuredvalues
are informative, and there will be a deviation between the water consumption data
measuredbyGROHESenseGuardandyourwatermeter.

IMPORTANT: Afterenteringanewemergencycontactintheapp,anautomatice-mail
issenttothisperson.Heorshemustconrminthee-mailthattheyagreewithreceiving
e-mailsinfuturerelatedtoyourGROHESensedevices.Withoutthisconrmation,the
emergencyfunctionwillnotbeactivatedforthisperson.
Youcanreturntothe“Emergencycontacts”screenbyfollowingthesteps1-3toview
thelistofemergencycontactscurrentlyassociatedwithyouraccountandyourhouse.

2. GETTING STARTED
WATER ON/OFF BUTTON AND LIGHT
The button “WATER ON/OFF” can be used
toturnwateronorobyopeningorclosing
the valve inside GROHE Sense Guard. Press
this button for 3 seconds to open or close
thevalve.Everytimethevalveisopened
or closed, the outline light on the device
ashesblueandyoucanhearthevalve.
IfGROHESenseGuardautomaticallyshuts
waterorightafteryoutrytoturniton,
this indicates a sudden massive increase of
waterow,whichisidentiedbythedevice
asunusuallyhigh.Inthiscase,rstturn
yourmanualmainwatervalveo,thenopenthevalveinGROHESenseGuard,andat
last,slowlyturnthemanualmainwatervalveon.
TheLEDlightabovethebuttonindicatesthewaterowstatus:
• LEDlightoninbluecolor=waterowison,thevalveisopen
• LEDlighto=waterowiso,thevalveisclosed

GROHE Sense Guard is a smart home device that is controlled with the use of GROHE
Sense app.

DEVICE FACTORY RESET
Reset function is used to make the device delete all the saved information, and make it
readyforconnectiontoanewWi-Finetwork.
FollowthesestepstoresetGROHESenseGuard:
1. Disconnectandreconnecttheelectricitysupply.
2. Press both buttons “CONNECTION” and “WATER ON/OFF” on the device at the
sametimeandholdthempressedfor4seconds.
3. Releasethebuttons.TheoutlinelightonthedevicewillashblueandtheLEDlight
above the “CONNECTION” button will start blinking orange.

OUTLINE LIGHT ON THE DEVICE
TheoutlinelightofGROHESenseGuardindicatesthefollowinginformation:
INTERNET OUTAGE
Incaseofinternetoutage,GROHESenseGuardcontinuestoshutoincaseofmajor
leaks,butitcan’tsendanyinformationorwarnings,e.g.onsmallerleaksorincaseyou
havedeactivatedautomaticshutofunctionality.
When internet is available again, the connection to the Wi-Fi network is restored
automatically,usingthelastWi-Ficredentialsusedbythedevice.Atthismoment,the
device will send the last pending alarm and the measurement data.
POWER OUTAGE
Incaseofpoweroutage,GROHESenseGuardisfullydeactivatedanddoesn’tprovide
anysecurityfunctions.ThevalveinthedeviceopensandWi-Ficonnectiongets
interrupted.
Whenthepowerisreestablished,GROHESenseGuardstartsprovidingitssecurity
functionsagain.TheconnectiontotheWi-Finetworkisrestoredautomatically,usingthe
lastWi-Ficredentialsusedbythedevice.
DEVICE DEACTIVATION AND WATER ON
Ifyouneedtointerveneagainstthedevicesecurityfunctionsorexperienceproduct
issues, unplug the device.
Inthiscase,GROHESenseGuardisfullydeactivatedanddoesn’tprovideanysecurity
functions. The valve in the device opens and Wi-Fi connection gets interrupted.

3.2. FIRMWARE
Firmwareisthesoftwareinthedevicethatcontrolsitsfunctions.GROHEstrongly
recommendsthatyoualwaysinstallthelatestrmware–thisistheonlywaytomake
useofthefullrangeofproductfunctionsandthelatestimprovements.Mostimportantly,
everynewrmwarereleasehasapositiveimpactonthelevelofprotectionagainstwater
damage.

3.3. CONTROL VIA THE APP AND DEVICE PREFERENCES
GROHE SENSE GUARD DETAILS
ToaccessmoredetailedinformationaboutGROHESenseGuard,taponyouractive
device on the overview screen.
Thisistheinformationyoucanview:
• Water consumption
• Volume of water consumed
• Estimated costs, calculated using the costs entered in the preferences
• Estimated split of total consumption into cold water and hot water, including
estimatedenergycoststoheatupthewaterusingthetypeofheatingandcosts
enteredintotheapp(notethatthisiscurrentlyabetafunctionintestingmode)
• Water pressure
• Systemtemperature
• Dayandtimeofthelastdataupdate(timewhenGROHESenseGuardsentthe
lastmeasurementdata)
Theconsumption,pressure,andtemperaturemeasurementsaredisplayedingraphs,
withthefollowingoptions:
• Switchyourviewbetweenaweek,amonth,andayear,bytappingonthetime
period in the upper part of the screen
• Previewpreviousorfollowingtimeperiodsbytappingonthearrowsbelowthe
graphs
• Gettheexactvaluebytappinginsidethegrapharea
WATER ON/OFF VIA THE APP
On the GROHE Sense Guard detail screen, tap the button at the top of the screen
accordingtothecurrentwaterowstatusandthedesiredaction:
• Turnwatero
• Turn water on
GROHE SENSE GUARD PREFERENCES
To access GROHE Sense Guard preferences, go to the GROHE Sense Guard detail page,
scroll to the bottom, and tap the “Preferences” button.
Thefollowingpreferencescanbeedited:
• Automatic shut-o in case of unusual water consumption. This setting applies
to2watersafetyfunctions:unusuallyhighwaterconsumption,multiplewater
pressure drops detected.
• Water system check canbeturnedonoro.Withthisfunction,theGROHE
SenseGuardcandetectverysmallleaksinyourpipingsystem.Thistestis
conductedonceevery24hoursduringthenight,atatimewhenwaterisusually
not used.
• Volume limitation for maximum water usage per tap, on a scale from 100 to 2,000
liters.Afterreachingthelimit,GROHESenseGuardautomaticallyshutswatero.
• Control via Sensefunctionenablesautomaticshut-otriggeredbyGROHESense.
WateroodingdetectedbyGROHESensewillcauseGROHESenseGuardtoshut
othewatersupply.Thisfunctionworkswhenbothdevicesareinstalledinthe
same virtual house in the app and both devices have a stable internet connection.
• Garden sprinkler modeletsyoudeactivateallwatersecurityfunctionsof
the GROHE Sense Guard during the time when high volume of water is used
intentionally,e.g.bygardensprinklersortollaswimmingpool.
