TheP61isboltedtotheskidtopreventmove-
mentduringshipping.
To free the stove from the skid you must re-
movethehold-downboltsintherearofthepedestal
base.
RemovingorInstallingrearcoverpanels
To remove the rear cover panels, loosen the
screws slightly and slide the covers outward as
shown inthe illustration.To reinstall,simply slide
backintoplaceandretightenthescrews.

Installing
PlacethestoveonanoncombustiblefloororUL
approved floor protector that extends 6 inches to the
front,6inchestothesidesand1inchtotherearofthe
stove.
Place the stove away from combustible walls at
leastasfarasshowninfigures3,4and5.Pleasenote
thedifference in side wall clearancewith andwithout
sideshields.
Notethattheclearancesshownareminimumfor
safety but do not leave much room for access when
cleaningorservicing.Pleasetakethisintoaccountwhen
placingthestove.
Connect the power cord to a 120 V.A.C. 60Hz
groundedreceptacle.
Afterconnectingthefluesystem,followtheabove
procedure.However,priortotakingthedraftreadingbe
sure all doors and windows in the home are closed.
Recordthedraftreading_______.Ifthisreadingismore
than .05" lower than the unconnected reading, check
forpossiblerestrictionsortheneedforoutsideair(see
page8).
Mobile Home Installation
When installing this unit in a mobile home several
requirementsmustbefollowed:
1.Theunitmustbeboltedtothefloor .Thiscanbe
donewith1/4"lagscrewsthroughthe2holesinthebase
plate.
2.Theunitmustalsobeconnectedfortheoutside
air.Seepage8.
3.Floorprotectionandclearancesmustbefollowed
as shown.
4.Unitmustbegroundedtothemetalframeofthe
mobilehome.
CAUTION:Thisappliancemustbeventedtotheout-
side.
Duetohightemperatures,thestoveshouldbeplaced
outoftrafficandawayfromfurnitureanddraperies.
Childrenandadultsshouldbealertedtothehazards
of high surface temperatures and should stay awayto
avoidburntoskinand/orclothing.
Youngchildrenshouldbecarefullysupervisedwhen
theyareinthesameroomasthestove.
Clothingand otherflammable materialsshould not
beplacedonornearthisunit.
Installationand repairofthisHarmanS toveshould
be done by a qualified service person. The appliance
shouldbeinspectedbeforeuseandatleastannuallybya
qualified service person. More frequent cleaning will be
required.Itisimperativethatcontrolcompartments,burn-

Acombustionblowerisusedtoextractthecom-
bustiongasesfromthefirebox.Thiscausesanega-
tivepressureinthefireboxandapositivepressure
intheventingsystemasshowninfig.6.Thelonger
theventpipeandmoreelbowsusedinthesystem,
the greater the flow resistance. Because of these
factswerecommendusingasfewelbowsaspos-
sibleand15feetorlessofventpipe.Themaximum
horizontalrunshouldnotexceed48".Ifmorethan
15 feet of pipe is needed, the diameter should be
increasedfrom3"to4"becausealargerpipecauses
less flow resistance. Be sure to use approved
pellet vent pipe wall and ceiling pass through
fittings to go through combustible walls and
ceilings.Besuretouseastartingcollartoattach
theventingsystentothestove.Thestartingcollar
mustbesealedtothestovewithhightempsili-
conecaulking.
Vent Pipe
Pelletventingpipe(alsoknownasPLvent)is
constructed of two layers with air space between
thelayers.Thisairspaceactsasaninsulatorand
reducestheoutsidesurfacetemperaturetoallowa
clearance to combustibles of only 3 inches. The
sectionsofpipelocktogethertoformanairtightseal
in most cases; however, in some cases a perfect
seal is not achieved. For this reason and the fact
thattheP61operateswithapositiveventpressure
we specify that the joints also be sealed with
clearsilicone.
OutsideAir
Outsideairisoptionalexceptinmobilehomes
and where building codes require.The benefit of
outside air is mainly noticed in small very tight
houses.
To install outside air use 2 3/8" I.D. flex pipe
partnumber2-00-08543.Thereisabreak-awayhole
on the rear panel which must be removed before
connectingtheflexpipe.Thepipeshouldberunout-
sideandterminatetothesideorbelowtheventpipe
outlet so the flue outlet is more than 12" from the
inletcover.Themaximumlengthrunofthispipeis
15feet.Ifalongerrunisneededthesizemustbe
increasedto3".Inletcoverpartnumber1-10-08542
shouldbeusedtokeepbirds,rodentsetc.outofthe
pipe.

#2 Preferred method
Thismethodalsoprovidesexcellentventingfor
normaloperationbutrequiresthestovetobeinstalled
fartherfromthewall.Theverticalportionofthevent
shouldbethreetofivefeethighandatleastthree
inches from a combustible wall. This vertical sec-
tionwillprovidenaturaldraftintheeventofapower
failure.
#1 Preferred method
Thismethodprovidesexcellentventingfornor-
maloperationandallows thestovetobeinstalled
closesttothewall.Twoinchesfromthewallissafe;
however,fourinchesallowsbetteraccesstoremove
therearpanel.Theverticalportionoftheventshould
bethree to fivefeet high. Thisvertical section will
providenaturaldraftintheeventofapowerfailure.

silicone in addition to the sealing system used by
themanufacturer.Pipesizeshouldbeincreasedto

#7 Installing into an existing

maloperation.This method alsoprovidesnatural
draftintheeventofapowerfailure.
InCanadaandsomeplacesintheUSitisre-
quiredthattheventpipeextendallthewaytothetop
ofthechimney.Thepipeorlinerinsidethechimney
shouldbe4"diameter.
Inthismethodacapshould also beinstalled
onthechimneytokeepoutrain.Onedisadvantage
ofthismethodisthatitishardertocleanthevent
pipe,therefore,thereisatendancy not todoitas
oftenasneeded.

Operation
Starting First Fire
Besurethepowercordispluggedintoa120volt
receptacle.Thiscanbeverifiedbytheredpower
lightonthecontrolpanel.
Fillthehopperwith pellets.
Filltheburnpotwithpelletstoaleveljustshortof
overflowing,fig.17.
Adjustfeedrate.Ifthisisyourfirstfireoryouare
tryingdifferentpellets,setthefeedadjusterto"3",
fig.18.Thisisaconservativenumberandwillprob-
ablyneedtobeincreased.Afteryouknowafeed
ratesettingthatworkswell,usethatsetting.Re-
member,toohighafeedratewillwastefuel.
Turn Mode selector to "OFF" and then to
"Stove Temp". This will turn the combustion
blowertohigh.Whenstartingafirealwaysturn
themodeselectorto"OFF"beforeselectingthe
desired mode. This resets the control for start-
up.
Turn Temp Dial to 7. This will allow the stove to
burn at maximum for feed rate adjusting pur-
poses.
Applystartinggeltopelletsinburnpotandlight
thegel.Closethedoorafterlighting.Atthispoint
thedistributionandcombustionlightswillbeon
andthefeedmotorlightwillbeoff.Asthetem-
peratureofthefireincreases,thefeedmotorlight
will come on and pellets will feed into the burn
pot.Asthestovetemperatureincreasesthedis-
tributionblowerspeedwillincrease.
After30to45minutesitmaybenecessarytoread-
justthefeedrate.Thefeedrateshouldbead-
justedsothereisaboutoneinchofashinfrontof
thefire,fig.20.Thisisamaximumburnposition
andusuallydoesnotachievethispositionunder
normalburnrates.

When to use "Stove Temp Mode"
In"StoveTempMode"theStoveTempDialde-
terminesthetemperatureofthestove.Heatoutput
and fuel consumption will remain constant. This
makes itpossible to tell how longa hopper full of
pellets will last. The distribution blower speed will
varyaccordingtothepositionofthemodeselector,
fig.21.
When to use "Room Temp Mode"
In"RoomTempMode"heatoutputiscontrolled
automatically by the Room Sensing Probe. When
theRoom Sensing Probecalls for heat, the stove
willincreaseoutput.WhentheRoomSensingProbe
isgettingclosetothesettemperature,thestovewill
begintoleveloffoutputandkeepthefireburningat
justtherighttemperaturetomaintainthatsetting.
Highoutputisdeterminedbythefeedrate.The
maximum feed rate should be set for 1" of ash in
frontoffire.
In"RoomTempMode"fuelconsumptionissac-
rificedforexactroomtemperature.Therefore,asit
getscoldermore pelletswill beburned automati-
cally.
Thedistributionblowerspeedwillvaryaccord-
ingtothepositionofthemodeselector,fig.21.
Shut-Down Procedure
Tokillthefireorstopburningthestove,turnthe
ModeSelectorto"OFF".Thiswillcausethefireto
diminishandburnout.Whenthefireburnsoutand
thestovecoolsdowneverythingwillstop.
Ifyoupull theplugtoshutdownthestove,all
motorswillstop.Thismaycauseincompletecom-
bustionandsmokeinthefirebox.Iftheloaddooris
openedthesmokemayescape.
Thebestwaytoshutdownthestoveissimply
letitrunoutofpellets,thenthestovewillshutdown
automatically.
Thissettingwillproducemediumheatwiththe
distributionbloweron"low".
Thissettingwillproducearoomtemperatureof70
degreeswiththedistributionbloweratmediumspeed.
Thissetting will produce continuous maximumheat output
withthedistributionbloweratfullspeed.

Theroomsensorisasmalltemperaturesen-
sor on the end of a 60" gray wire. This sensor is
installedmuchlikeastandardwallthermostat.Be-
causeitissosmall,itcanbehiddenalongthetrim
ofadoorwayorevenupthelegofacoffeetable.
Thereisaremoteroomsensorportontherearof
theunitforeasyexternalconnection.Usestandard
18-2thermostatwiretoextendthedistancetothe
desired location (100'maximum). Theroom sen-
sorshouldbeinstalledinthelocationwhereyouwant
tocontrolthetemperature.
NOTE: Distances of more than 25 feet from
theunitorinanotherroomarenotrecommended.
The room sensor is essential for the P61's excel-
lentefficiency.
NOTE: It is recommended that the room
sensorbe installed, evenif only installed on the
rearoftheunitasareturnairsensor.

RemovingAshes:
Whenapproximatly1tonofpelletshasbeen
burneditwillbenecessarytoemptytheashpan.
Ashesshouldbeplacedinametalcon-
tainerwithatightfittinglid.Theclosedcon-
tainer of ashes should be placed on a non-
combustiblefloororontheground,wellaway
fromallcombustiblematerials,pendingfinal
disposal.Ifashesaredisposedofbyburialin
soil or otherwise locally dispersed, they
should be retained in the closed container
untilallcindershavethoroughlycooled.
Itisrecommendedthatthestoveiscoldand
shutdownwhenremovingashpan.

buildup.Avacuumcleanerishandytoremovethe
residue. Be sure the stove is cold if you use a
vacuum.

fireburningusingthespecialtoolprovidedwithyour
stove. Scrape the floor and sides of the burn pot.
