Network feature functionality
The Nortel Mobile Communication Gateway 3100 (MCG 3100) extends
network feature functionality to mobile clients. The mobile clients
(supported RIM and Nokia phones) register to the MCG 3100 to access
the enterprise network. After registration, users can perform a variety of
functions such as:
Manage friends by using the MCC 3100 local directory
BlackBerry users can also manage friends by using the BlackBerry
address book.
Search the corporate directory and the MCC 3100 local directory
Use the logs to view the most recent related incoming and outgoing
calls, voice mail indicator, and system events
Create a user group that contains multiple friends and then initiate an
ad hoc conference call to the group members
Redirect incoming calls to alternative contact locations (for example.
office, home, or other)

Associate a single number with all of your outbound calls
Handle the message waiting indicator (MWI) for new voice mail
messages
The MCG 3100 supports the following clients:
Nortel Mobile Communication Client 3100 for BlackBerry
Nortel Mobile Communication Client 3100 for Nokia
Nortel Mobile Communication Client 3100 for Windows Mobile Single
Mode
This document refers to the supported clients using the generic term
mobile client.
ATTENTION
Mobile client devices must have an Internet connection.
For more information, see the following documents:
Nortel Mobile Communication Client 3100 for Blackberry User Guide
(NN42030-101)
Nortel Mobile Communication Client 3100 for Nokia User Guide
(NN42030-102)

Mode User Guide (NN42030-107)
ATTENTION
The MCG 3100 does not support the MCC 3100 for Windows Mobile Dual Mode.
The MCC 3100 for Windows Mobile Dual Mode communicates directly with the
communication server.
Components
The Nortel Mobile Communication 3100 Series Portfolioincludes server
and mobile client components. All server components are coresident on a
single supported server. For more information, see Table 2 "MCG 3100
software components" (page 17) and “Hardware components” (page 17).

ATTENTION
All of the MCG Server components must be coresident on a single supported
server. You can add an additional server with identical software to provide
redundancy.
Hardware components
The MCG 3100 server runs only on the following supported commercial
off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware:
HP DL320G4 (NTDU97AAE5)
IBM x306m (NTDU99AAE5)
For more information on the MCG 3100, see Nortel Mobile Communication
3100 Series Planning and Engineering (NN42030-200) and Nortel
Mobile Communication Gateway 3100 Installation (NN42030-300).
Administrative tasks
Use the Mobile Communication Gateway 3100 Server Web-based tool,
called the MCG 3100 Web Console, to perform the following administrative
tasks:
monitor the Mobile Communication Gateway 3100 Server processes
start, stop, and reboot the server
configure the server operating parameters
monitor and track statistics for users

18 Overview
track statistics for the enterprise system
manage the distribution of client software to enterprise mobile clients
System configuration
Install all Nortel Mobile Communication 3100 Series Portfolio software
components (Mobile Communication Gateway Server, Group Call Server,
Group Call Database, and Administration Server) on a single supported
COTS server. You then integrate the server into the enterprise network
behind the corporate firewall.
If two supported COTS servers are available, configure them with identical
software components. This configuration strategy provides redundancy. If
a server component fails or becomes inaccessible, users can restart their
communication sessions on the backup system.
For more information, see “System implementation options” (page 29). For
information about supported COTS servers, see “Hardware components”
(page 17).
Network protocols
The Mobile Communication Gateway 3100 Server uses the following
standard signaling protocols to communicate with the system components:
Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)—transports feature messages such
as call setup, routing, and authentication to Internet Protocol (IP)
endpoints within the domain.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)—used by the Mobile
Communication Gateway and wireless clients to transfer documents
over the Internet.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
encryption (HTTPS)—used for secure communication over the Internet.
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)—used to access a
hierarchical directory of information on a directory server.
Transport Layer Security (TLS)—prevents intrusion attacks, such as
hijacking and snooping.
For more detailed information, see Nortel Mobile Communication 3100
Series Planning and Engineering (NN42030-200).
Licensing
Licensing controls how many Mobile Communication Client users can
log on to the system. The system allocates licenses on a first-come,
first-served basis. For example, if 100 licenses are available, they are

Mobile client commissioning
Install and configure the communication server
The mobile clients depends on the following communication server
components:
Call Server
Each user requires 1 PCA to support extending calls from the
communication server to the MCG 3100 (and ultimately the mobile
client).
SIP Gateway
The SIP GW runs on the VxWorks Signaling Server platform.
SIP Proxy Server
The MCG 3100 requires the use of the NRS SIP Proxy Server (only
available on the Linux based NRS).

Install and configure the MCG 3100
For more information, see Nortel Mobile Communication Gateway 3100
Installation (NN42030-300).
Add Dynamic Gateway Endpoint on the Linux Based NRS for the
MCG 3100
For more information, see “Enterprise Communication Server
configuration” (page 92).
Add PCAs for each mobile client user
For more information, see “PCA configuration” (page 90).
Add User Endpoint for the mobile client user on the Linux based NRS
For more information, see “Enterprise Communication Server
configuration” (page 92).
Configure the dial plan
For more information, see “Dial plan configuration” (page 86).
Configure trunking parameters
For more information see “Dial plan configuration” (page 86).
You must configure the communication server SIP trunk that receives
MCG 3100 calls, on behalf of mobile client users, to ESN5. You must
configure all associated Virtual trunks to WNK/WNK. These settings
are required so that mobile client calls to the Public Network display
the correct Calling Line ID (CLID) and have the same Network Class
of Service (NCOS) as a call from the associated communication server
telephone.
The Virtual trunk is WNK/WNK if the output from Element Manager, or a
terminal window, is:
