Design and application
The MCX402DR-BRD is I/O expander dedicated to the RACS 5 system. The device is connected to MC16
access controller to provide control of 1 or 2 doors with Wiegand or PRT (RACS CLK/DTA) readers but in
case of PRT readers new firmware must be uploaded to the expander. The expander offers eight NO/NC
inputs, two relay outputs, two transistor outputs, 1.0A main power supply output and 0.2 auxiliary power
supply output. All outputs of the expander are protected against overload. MCX402DR-BRD is supplied from
18VAC and it offers 13.8VDC at AUX and TML outputs to supply all door devices including door lock and
readers. The expander can be equipped with backup battery.
The expander is offered individually as electronic module or as a component of MCX402-1-KIT for read-
in/out door control or as a component of MCX402-2-KIT for two read-in doors control.
In case of upgrade from RACS 4 to RACS 5 system, PR411 and PR402 controllers can be converted into
MCX402DR expanders by upload of new firmware.

Power supply and backup battery
MCX402DR-BRD expander is designed for power supply from 230VAC/18VAC/40VA transformer and then
it offers 13.8VDC power outputs (AUX, TML) for external devices. Optionally the expander can be supplied
from 12VDC or 24VDC but in case of 12VDC the backup battery cannot be directly connected to the
expander thus the emergency power supply must be provided by external PSU.
Note: Expander cannot be started using only power supply from backup battery.

Connection to RS485 communication bus
MCX402DR-BRD is an addressable device and it must be connected to RS485 communication bus of the
controller where MCT readers and other MCX expanders are usually also operated. Prior to connection, the
expander must be assigned unoccupied address in range of 100-115. Any topology of communication bus
can be used (e.g. star, tree). The matching resistors (terminators) connected at the ends of transmitting
lines are not required. In most cases communication works with any signal cable e.g. U/UTP cat.5. All
devices connected to the same bus should have GND terminals connected. The RS485 communication
standard in RACS 5 system guarantees proper communication in a distance of up to 1200 meters as well as
high resistance to interferences.
IN1-IN8 inputs
The expander offers 8 inputs IN1-IN8 which can be configured as NO or NC. Electric parameters of all
inputs are configured within low level configuration by means of RogerVDM software. Inputs are assigned
with functions using VISO management software.
IO1 and IO2 outputs
The expander offers two open collector type transistor outputs IO1 and IO2. Output polarity can be
configured as normal or reversed. Output with normal polarity represents high impedance in normal state
and is shorted to ground when triggered. Output with reversed polarity operates with inverted logic. It is
shorted to ground in normal state and represents high impedance when triggered. The configuration of
output polarity is done within low level configuration using RogerVDM software. By default, outputs are
configured with normal polarity. Outputs are assigned with functions using VISO management software.
REL1 and REL2 outputs
The expander offers two relay outputs REL1 and REL2. Each relay offers NO/NC terminals and REL1 is
30V/1.5A rated while REL2 is 230VAC/5A rated. In case of power outage both relays remain in the off state.
Outputs are assigned with functions using VISO management software.
AUX power output
AUX power supply output is dedicated to supply door lock, alarm signalling device and other door related
devices. The terminal AUX is protected with 1.0A electronic fuse.
TML power output
TML power supply output is dedicated to supply readers at doors. The terminal TML+ is protected with 0.2A
electronic fuse.
Door control
The expander offers power supply at door and enables the operation of PRT (RACS CLK/DTA) or Wiegand
readers with MC16 access controller. The expander offers 1.0A power output (AUX), 0.2A power output
(TML), RACS CLK/DTA communication bus and programmable inputs/outputs which can be used to control
door lock, communication with Wiegand readers and control of LEDs and buzzer of Wiegand readers. The
1.0A output is dedicated to supply door lock and door related devices (e.g. alarm signalling device). The

0.2A output is dedicated to supply readers. In the figure below a typical read-in/read-out door control
scenario with MCX402DR-BRD expander is presented. The door system is supplied from the expander and
it includes:
2 x PRT (RACS CLK/DTA) or 2 x Wiegand 26-66bit readers
12VDC door lock
12VDC alarm signalling device
Door contact
Exit button

Connection of expander to controller
The expander is not operated as standalone device but as an extension of MC16 access controller. It is
recommended to supply the MCX402DR-BRD from own transformer and equip it with backup battery. All
devices connected to the same RS485 bus should have GND terminals connected. Such connection can be
ensured with any wire. The maximal length of RS485 bus between MC16 controller and the expander
equals to 1200m. MCX402-BRD expander is usually installed near controlled door.

Device configuration
The expander is configured within low level configuration by means of RogerVDM software. Such
configuration must be done prior to connection to MC16 access controller particularly in regard of RS485
address and reader parameters. The address of expander can also be programmed manually with jumpers
on expander’s board. The address programmed with jumpers (hardware address) has higher priority than
the address programmed with RogerVDM (software address). The factory new expander has ID=100
software address.
Addressing with jumpers
Every time the address is modified, the expander must be restarted with RST button or switching power
supply off and on.

Installation
Enclosure with DIN rail is recommended for installation of MCX402DR expander. All electric connections
must be done without voltage on wires/terminals and with power supply disconnected. Optionally DIN rail
mounting clips can be removed and the expander can be installed on flat surface. It is recommended to
install the expander in the same enclosure as transformer/PSU. Prior to expander connection to the
controller specify RS485 address and configure other parameters if necessary. The expander is configured
within low level configuration by means of RogerVDM. Default address of factory new device is ID=100.
