Introducing Telenium
IP
Generation Three
Why IP Telephony?
What started out as a technology to provide toll bypass for long distance calls, has now
evolved to an all-encompassing solution for many businesses. IP telephony allows
companies to deploy a converged data/voice network that can provide reduced business
costs. The cost savings materialize in the management and servicing of equipment,
inter-office phone line costs and reduced long distance costs. Enterprises of every size
can now connect multiple facilities using their data network to provide voice applications
in a seamless manner.
IP telephony can provide collaboration tools no traditional system can match. These
tools can be used by employees in the multiple offices to improve efficiency, reduce
missed communication and streamline internal processes.
This document will illustrate the applications and benefits of IP telephony. More
specifically, the document will describe how the Telenium
IP
Generation Three
product can address these applications to deliver new benefits to customers.
Convergence Is Here, and It Offers More
In the same way that digital key systems and digital PBXs replaced analog systems, network-
based (IP) telephony systems are replacing digital systems. This replacement is happening more
quickly than the analog-to-digital transition did. At the end of 2004, there were about 6.5 million
VoIP access lines in the United States. The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) has
published projections that the number will grow to nearly 10 million lines by the end of 2005 and
over 20 million by 2008.
Experienced IT managers are realizing that the decision has become not whether they should
deploy IP telephony, but when. The convergence of voice and data communications using IP
Telephony is going to have an ever-larger impact for customers and resellers of communications
systems.
Convergence Helps You to Achieve Your Customers’ Goals
As a solution provider, you strive to offer the best solution for each customer. There is no one-
size-fits-all product in communications. Carrying products with flexible options means being able
to fit your solutions to more than one customer application, more than one selling situation. You
need a solution that offers straightforward installation, flexible architecture, and a variety of ways
for the customer to connect to clients and associates.

The Current Workforce Model is Evolving
Your customers will continue to deploy more enterprise network technology as their own
needs evolve. IP Telephony enables the addition of personal productivity tools such as
unified messaging, instant messaging, voice over Wi-Fi®, and click-to-dial, as customers
need them. You need to offer a communications system that can take advantage of
existing and future technology. Vodavi’s Telenium
IP
is that system.
We can do more with Internet Protocol than PSTN-to-IP network gateways. In what
other ways can we capitalize on the flexibility and huge development potential of IP
Telephony? In what area will the end consumer find a compelling reason for using IP-
based systems? The answer lies in demonstrating for our customers a concrete benefit
from installing this technology. So when the customer asks “What will IP convergence
do for me?” what does Vodavi say? In this guide, we will demonstrate how a small-to-
mid-sized company can deploy the types of features and solutions which used to be
available only to companies with large-enterprise budgets.
The Vodavi Commitment to IP Technology
Telenium
IP
offers an extensive, feature-rich suite of IP communication solutions for the
small to medium business (SMB). We will continue our commitment to our channel
partners and end users to evolve the Telenium
IP
system to meet their evolving
technology requirements. Our objective is to help existing and new customers to move
up to a highly adaptive IP communications solution, one that will allow them to conduct
business in the way that they choose. We do this by providing a platform that allows
enterprises to gradually add IP communication tools at their own pace. We are
committed to developing cost-effective, highly reliable communication solutions to allow
the enterprise to be more efficient, more competitive, and ultimately more successful.
We believe that business should not have to adapt to technology, but technology should
be adaptable to the needs of the business. Vodavi is committed to delivering on the
promise of new and emerging technology to ensure that your investment today with
Vodavi is an investment in the future, from both a technological and financial
perspective.

IP
: Mobility Presence Collaboration Convergence
The Telenium
IP
system is designed to address the key needs of today’s dynamic and
fast-changing business environment:
Mobility
Each year, a larger percentage of the U.S. work force conducts business out of their
cars, their homes, and between customer appointments on the road. For these
mobile workers, increased mobile access to communications with their co-workers
and customers means greater freedom, and greater productivity. Telenium
IP
includes many new solutions for traveling road warriors, home-based
telecommuters, and people on the move within their own company’s enterprise
locations.
Be reachable via wireless IP phone or PDA anywhere within your company’s
wireless LAN, then return to the comfort and convenience of your Telenium
IP
desk phone. All with a single extension and mailbox.
Add a full-featured Nomad
SP
soft phone for Windows to your laptop for when you
work at home, and you will not have to give up one-button dialing to reach your
team members.
Presence
Great customer service involves not only being reachable, but being most reachable
when the business need is greatest. Use the rich feature set of Telenium
IP
and
PathFinder
IP
to make sure that you never miss an important call again.
Know when the call is coming from your most important account so that you can
let other calls forward to a business partner or mailbox.
When waiting for a critical call, have your cell phone ring at the same time as
your office extension so you don’t miss the call, even when you leave for lunch.
Signal your partner’s software-based Nomad
SP
phone with a text message to let
him know that the boss needs to talk right away.
Use a pre-selected or custom message on your phone to let internal callers know
when your meeting will be over so they know when you will be available to talk.

Collaboration
Your success as an organization depends on the ability of your people to perform
their work efficiently and effectively.
Moving from office to conference room, or traveling between cities for face-to-
face meetings takes valuable time. Save some of that time with a video call for
routine meetings, using Nomad
VP
PC- or notebook-based solution and a Web
camera.
As a supervisor for your call center, join the call when an agent requires real-
time assistance.
Network your company’s locations, and assign flexible buttons to important co-
workers’ stations to know at a glance when they are on the phone. The distance
does not matter.
Convergence
The convergence of multiple technologies onto a single IP infrastructure offers you
the chance to use new ways to enhance productivity, ease system deployment, and
find cost savings by using the same network to solve multiple communication issues.
Receive voice mails in your email box, so you have the option of retrieving and
answering them from any PC or PDA with email access.
Record an important conversation with your supplier via your NomadSP and
email the recording to your shipping manager.
Operate your phone and PC over the same single LAN connection to your
desktop, saving the cost of installing and maintaining two sets of network cables.
Use Power over Ethernet (PoE) to ensure that your phones are protected by the
same backup power supply as your systems.

The Telenium

system performs its job by exchanging signals and voice paths over a
Fast Ethernet network.* The backplane is one or more LAN switches. Power over
Ethernet (PoE) is supported for Telenium

* Telenium

distributed architecture
The phones and gateways that make up a Telenium
IP
system use the Local Area Network (LAN)
as the communications backplane. This provides for incredible flexibility in placing the system
parts wherever in the LAN they are needed.
In this example, the Single-Line modules (SLTM2) are placed on different floors from the rest of
the system—the nearby connections to the LAN are utilized in place of running additional wire
pairs for single-line fax machines and phones.
Highlights of the options offered by Telenium
IP
’s distributed architecture:
Centralize the equipment in mounting cabinets, or place gateways wherever they are
needed in the LAN.
The cabinet is not required, but is recommended for the protection of the equipment.
The cabinet has a passive ‘backplane’ that is not a communications bus. It provides
grounding and a pass-through to Champ connections on the back of the unit.
Connections provided for legacy punch-down blocks.
Use any high-speed LAN infrastructure meeting the necessary specifications.
Add modules without taking down the system.
Apply firmware upgrades remotely.
