1About this document
1.1 Information on the Operating Instructions
These Operating Instructions provide important notes on handling the product MPR of
SICK AG.
Prerequisites for working safely are:
● Compliance with all stated safety information and handling instructions
● Compliance with local accident prevention regulations and general safety requirements
in the MPR application area
These Operating Instructions are intended for skilled persons and electricians.
These instructions are part of the device and must be stored in immediate proximity of the
device and available for the personnel at all times. When passing on the device to third-
parties, also hand over the Operating Instructions.
These Operating Instructions do not give instructions on operating the machine or the
system where the device might be integrated. The Operating Instructions of the machine
provide this information.

2.1 Intended use
2.1.1 Purpose of the MPR
The SICK Meeting Point Router (MPR) links a plant-side machine network with the SICK
remote architecture.
2.1.2 Installation location
Install the MPR only in a weather-protected area or inside (IP54).
To avoid misuse of the MPR by unauthorized persons, place it in an access-protected area.
2.2 Responsibility of user

3 Product description
3.1 Product identification
The type plate is located on the top of the right side of the housing.
3.2 Product features
The SICK Meeting Point Router (MPR) links a plant-side machine network with the SICK
remote architecture.
The MPR allows a SICK Service Technician to maintain the sensors in the machine network
via remote service.
Once maintenance is complete, the MPR's integrated firewall disconnects the machine
network from the internet or the operating company network.
The MPR is activated via the internal touchscreen (see “Operating concept”, page 18).
3.3 Safety concept
The SICK remote solution performs remote maintenance through highly encrypted data
channels, based on the two standard protocols HTTPS and SSH.
The SSH connection is used for tunneling TCP ports to the remote maintenance computer
of the operating company. Authentication is performed with a pair of keys (Public Key
Encryption) which are also only valid for a limited time.
With either protocol, the connections are established by the operating company only; it is
not necessary to allow incoming connections in the operating company network.
In particular, SICK will not be able to obtain access to the operating company's systems in
any way unless the operating company establishes a remote maintenance connection.

3.4 Device variants
3.4.1 MPR LAN

In the “LAN” version, the internet connection occurs via a Local Area Network (LAN).
3.4.2 MPR 4G
In the “4G” version, a 4G router provides the internet connection.
The MPR 4G has an antenna on the outside wall for this connection.

The MPR 4G requires a mini SIM card with dimensions 25 mm x 15 mm. Use a SIM card
adapter when a micro or nano SIM card is used. A data volume of minimum 500 MB/month
is recommended.
The SIM card is not included with delivery.

4 Installation
4.1 Technical requirements
The following requirements must be met for the remote maintenance system to function
properly:
● The SICK Meeting Point Router LAN/4G must have access to the internet.
● Name resolution via DNS works correctly.
● The HTTPS access to the remoteservice.sick.com server via port 443 must be possible
either directly or via a proxy server.
Test: Test: Call-up https://remoteservice.sick.com in the browser.
● Open port 22 (SSH / SICK port) so that access to the “remoteservice.sick.com” server
will be available - through the firewall as well.
Test: Test: Perform
TELNET REMOTESERVICE.SICK.COM 22 in a shell. The server identification
of the SSH server is displayed.
● 4G signal
The operating company is responsible for the use of 4G.
– The strength of the mobile radio signal must be adequate and stable.
You can test the signal strength with the signal strength display of a standard 4G
mobile phone. However, this check is valid at the time and location when made and
does not ensure a stable signal strength.
– MPR 4G is delivered with an antenna on the outside wall as standard.
4.2 Notes on installation
Requirements
● Plant-side data (IP addresses, gateway addresses, subnet) of network topology are
available.
● Internet access available (see “Technical requirements”, page 11).
● For MPR 4G version: SIM card available (see “MPR 4G”, page 10).
● Configuration files from SICK are available
This data is provided by SICK on a USB stick.
Procedure
1. Install the MPR (see “Installation”, page 12).
2. Connect the MPR (see “Connections”, page 12).
NOTE:
A MAC address is required for installation depending on the operating company's
network administration.
The MAC address is printed on the MPR (ETH2).
NOTICE:
Prior to the first commissioning, record the data on a check list. Based on this checklist,
SICK provides a configuration file.

1. Lead the power cable (power input, see “Technical data”, page 26) through the cable
glands (fixing range: 10 ... 14 mm).

4.7 Connecting the MPR to the machine network
4.7.1 Connection of the MPR to the machine network
A free IP address of the machine network is required.
Example:
● Machine network: 192.168.5.XXX
● Net mask: 255.255.255.0
● MPR IP address: 192.168.5.110
1. Switch on the MPR and let it start completely.
2. Insert the USB stick in a free USB port during full operation (see “Connections”,
page 12).
3. The configuration file will be automatically detected and installed.
4. MPR restarts automatically.
5. Remove the USB stick.
4.7.2 Ethernet connection to machine network
Machine network:
Connect the switch in the MPR via network cable with the machine network to integrate the
MPR into the machine network (see “Connections”, page 12).
4.7.3 Connecting the MPR with the internet
Internet (local/external):
Connect the network cable with the RJ 45 socket “ETH2” and connect it to the gateway/
router to integrate the MPR into the internet/intranet.
4G option: For a MPR 4G, connect the cable to socket “LAN 1” of the router (see “Connec-
tions”, page 12).
NOTE:
Copy the configuration file provided by SICK onto an USB stick.
The USB stick must have FAT32 format and the configuration file has to be in the root
path

4.7.4.2 Commissioning of the 4G router
Default factory setting
This description refers to the default factory settings.
Restoring the default factory settings: Press the reset button 3 times within 2 seconds.
Procedure
1. Switch the MPR off (circuit breaker (see “Connections”, page 12)).
2. Lead the antenna cable through the cable gland.
3. Connect the antenna cable to the SMA plug of the main antenna (see “Connections”,
page 12).
4. Mount the antenna on a firm base.
5. Insert the SIM card in the SIM card slot.

NOTICE:
Support from a SICK technician is required for initial commissioning.
Please contact your local SICK Customer Service before initial commissioning.

4.7.4.3 Entering the SIM card information for MPR 4G
Requirements
● A PC with browser is required for configuration of the 4G router.
● The APN address (Access Point Name) of the provider (e.g., “web.provider.com”) and the
PIN must be known to be able to use the SIM card.
1. Connect the 4G router to the configuration PC via an Ethernet cable.
2. PC configuration: Activate DHCP client on the PC (O
BTAIN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY).
3. Open browser (e.g., Internet Explorer, Firefox).
4. Enter IP address of the 4G-Router in address bar (default: 192.168.1.1).
If a proxy server is enabled in your browser:
– Disable the proxy server
or
– add the IP address of the 4G router as “exception”.
5. Login.
– User name: insys (default)
– Password: icom
Modified data will be transmitted to the 4G router after clicking the “OK” button.
6. Enter PIN of the SIM card and click button
ACTIVATE WWAN (Menu “WWAN”, page
“WWAN”).
7. Select the authentification method (recommended “PAP” or “CHAP”) to be used with
the respective radio buttons.
8. Enter user name and password for login in the provider.
9. Enter the APN of the wireless network provider, where the connection is to be made, into
the field A
CCESS POINT NAME.
10. Confirm settings with “OK”.
NOTICE:
IP address in local network.
The IP address of the 4G-Router in the local network only has to be changed when the IP
address is already used or a different address range is required.
To change:
Menu: Router / Basic Settings / IP addresses (LAN): Enter IP address of the router in
the local network.
Confirm settings with “

5Operation
5.1 Operating concept
The MPR is activated via the touchscreen.
5.1.1 Starting the MPR
1. Switch on the circuit breaker (see “Connections”, page 12).
2. The MPR will start. This can take several minutes.
3. The following is displayed and the MPR is ready for operation:

5.1.2 Establishing a connection

5.1.3 Disconnecting

1. Click button DISCONNECT to disconnect the connection.
A safety prompt will be displayed.
1. Click button OK to disconnect the connection.
5.1.4 Switching off
Switch the MPR off on the circuit breaker (see “Connections”, page 12).
5.2 Operating the remote platform
5.2.1 Registering on the platform
1. Call-up https://remoteservice.sick.com in the browser.
2. Click on LOGIN and log in with the user name and password provided by SICK.
3. Click on I
NSTALL CERTIFICATE to download and install the certificate.
4. Enter the password provided by SICK in the password prompt and click on N

5. Click OK, close the browser and restart it.

7. As soon as the certificate is confirmed, you will be automatically logged in future when
starting the platform.
8. Select an available machine under S
ERVICE PORTAL > SERVICE TECHNICIAN > SELECT MACHINE.
9. Install two programs, MPA tools and tight VNC, for remote control of the desired
machine.
10. Select menu item S
ERVICE PORTAL > SOFTWARE INSTALLATION for installation of the software.

5.2.2 Installing tight VNC
tight VNC, the Virtual Network Computing, allows monitoring and controlling one PC via
another one . Mouse and keypad entries are transferred directly.
1. Download and install the tight VNC software from https://remoteservice.sick.com.
