Introduction
This installation manual includes all of the basic information to connect, install, and configure a complete
ADA Suite 8 x 8 multiroom system. This manual is designed to be a quick installation guide for
installers who are familiar with ADA multiroom systems and only need basic step-by-step instructions.
The ADA Suite 8 x 8 is a high performance fully featured eight input by eight output multiroom
preamplifier. Hand crafted in the United States to the strict quality and performance standards established
by Audio Design Associates, the Suite 8 x 8 offers most of the features of the Suite 16 multiroom
system at a significantly lower cost.
Using ADA’s PCOS Software Setup Program
The Setup section of the preliminary manual explains how to setup the Suite 8 x 8 manually with the
front panel controls. The PC program included on the enclosed disc also allows you to set up the Suite
8 x 8 with a computer. If you have used ADAs PCOS program for the Suite 16 before, you will find this
program very familiar.

Installation Step 1
Taking Inventory of the Components to Install the Suite 8 x 8
Before installing the Suite 8 x 8, you should take a basic inventory to make sure that you have all the
components and cables necessary to install a fully functional multiroom system. Listed below is a chart
showing the required and optional components in an ADA Suite 8 x 8 multiroom system.

Unpacking and Inspecting the Suite 8 x 8
Unpack the Suite 8 x 8 from the shipping carton and remove the enclosed AC power cord and 3.5”
floppy disc. While you are unpacking the unit, inspect it thoroughly for possible shipping damage. If
you see any, contact ADA for further instructions. If possible, save and store both the carton and the
packing inserts for possible future transport.

Changing Internal Jumper Settings as Necessary
Before you mount the Suite 8 x 8, you may need to remove the cover panel and change the internal
baud rate and fixed/variable output jumpers to accommodate each specific installation. In most cases,
you should not need to alter the internal jumper settings for baud rate and fixed level output.

Baud Rate Jumper
The Suite 8 x 8 leaves the factory with an internal baud rate of 19,200 bps. There is an internal jumper
that allows you to change the baud rate to 1,200 bps if necessary. This jumper is located behind the
toroidal power transformer. The jumper is labeled for 1,200 and 19,200 bps. Simply move the jumper to
the desired 1,200 or 19,200 position. Note: When you set the baud rate internally, make sure that the
baud rate of the control head matches the internal baud rate setting.
Fixed or Variable Output Level Jumpers
There are also eight separate fixed or variable jumper settings for each output. This allows you to set the
output to a fixed level if desired. The factory default setting is variable.

Rack Mounting Your ADA Suite 8 x 8
The light weight of the Suite 8 x 8 makes it easily hold it in place while you screw it into the rack. We
recommend using nylon shoulder-type washers in front and behind the faceplate to help isolate the
unit from the rack to prevent mechanical ground loops. The washers also keep the unit from being
scratched.
Installation Step 6
Analog Audio Input Connections to the Suite 8 x 8
Use a standard pair of shielded interconnect cables terminated with RCA plugs on each for each of the
eight analog audio components in the system. Connect the left and right audio output of each
component to one of the eight analog inputs of the Suite 8 x 8. NOTE: Do not use directional cables
with the shield lifted at one end. These type of cables can cause ground loops and subsequent 60 Hz
hum.
When using ADA MC-5000 components, follow the button format layout for each component. The
standard input sequence for the MC-5000 is as follows:

Installation Step 7
Output Connections to a Multichannel Power Amplifier
Use a pair of shielded interconnect cables terminated with RCA plugs for each of the eight analog
audio outputs to the power amplifier(s). Connect the left and right audio output of each room the Suite
8 x 8 will be controlling to the corresponding input of the power amplifiers.
Depending on the power required for the speakers in your system, we recommend using two ADA
PTM-850 eight-channel power amplifiers for use with the Suite 8 x 8. NOTE: DO NOT use directional
cables with the shield lifted at one end.

Installation Step 8
Connecting the Source Trigger to the ACC 48 and IRL-5000
Connect a nine-conductor ribbon connector terminated with a male DB-9 connector from the Input
Voltage Trigger to both the ACC-48 and the IRL-5000. Please contact ADA if you need a ribbon
connector for the ACC 48 and IRL 500. We will provide the necessary ribbon cable for whatever
length you need.
The input trigger permits the power to be removed from source components when they are not being
used to preserve the life of the device. Whenever you select an input via an ADA keypad or other
software command, the Suite 8 x 8 provides a constant +12 DC voltage between ground (Pin 1) and
the corresponding pin on the upper DB-9 connector.

Connecting the Output Voltage Trigger to Power Amplifiers
If you are using an ADA amplifier with a DB-9 connector like the PTM-1225, connect a nine-conductor
ribbon connector from the Output Voltage Trigger output to the power amplifier’s DB-9 trigger connector.
If you are using a power amplifier with a trigger connector other than a DB-9, you’ll need to create a
special triggering cable with a DB-9 on one end and something else (screw terminal, 1/8” mini jack, etc.)
on the other. Follow the Suite 8 x 8’s termination diagram below in order to accommodate the amplifier’s
different trigger cable.
Please contact ADA if you need a ribbon connector for the ACC 48 and IRL 500. We will provide the
necessary ribbon cable for whatever length you need. Note: The Suite 8 x 8’s triggering circuitry can
supply up to 250 mA of current to trigger on an amplifier(s). Do not exceed this current limit or an
internal fuse may blow.
Installation Step 10
Connecting a Paging Source to the Suite 8 x 8’s Paging Input
Use a shielded two-conductor microphone cable to connect the output from your paging source (telephone
system, paging microphone, etc.) to the Suite 8 x 8. The 600 ohm paging input is terminated on the rear
panel with a removable 5-pin connector and has the following configuration:
Pin 1: ground; Pin 2: Positive (+); Pin 3: Negative (-); Pin 4: -DC (AC) trigger; Pin 5: +DC (AC) trigger

This line level paging input can be connected to the audio output of a telephone systems or some other
type of paging component. We recommend that you use a balanced connection of the paging input
whenever possible. We recommend using a balanced source whenever possible. If you are using an
unbalanced paging source, connect the signal across the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals only.
Installation Step 11
Connecting a Paging Trigger Source to the Paging Input Trigger
Use any two-conductor 18-22 AWG wire from the AC or DC source that will activate the paging
trigger input. The AC/DC triggering source is connected across pins 4 (-) and 5 (+) of the paging input
connector. If you are connecting an AC source for external page triggering, you can connect the source
in either direction.
Installation Step 12
Terminating ADA Bus® Cables
Use shielded three-conductor 18 AWG wire to make all ADA bus connections for the Suite 8 x 8 and
other ADA Bus components. The relatively thick ADA bus wire makes it possible to connect multiple
ADA components on a single bus over very long wire runs. The pin configuration is as follows:
Pin 1=Ground Pin 2=Feedback Terminal (TX)
Pin 3=Control Terminal (RX) Pin 4= +15-24 Vdc supply voltage.
1. Cut a section of shielded three-conductor wire to the desired length for each ADA Bus cable you
want to terminate.
2. Strip the outer insulation to expose the shield and three separate conductors.
3. For each of the three conductors in the shielded wire, strip just enough insulation from the wire to
expose 1/4" of bare wire to fit into the connector.
4. Unravel the shield and prepare it as a separate conductor by twisting it tightly clockwise.
5. Loosen each of the four setscrews on each connector with a small flat blade screwdriver (1/8” wide)
enough to insert the stripped bare speaker wire.
6. Before inserting the wire into the connector, twist all its strands tightly to prevent strays that could
cause a short circuit. You may want to “tin” the stripped wire with solder to prevent it from fraying
and oxidizing.
7. Follow the pin configuration listed above, but always use the shield for the ground (pin 1).
8. Insert the stripped bare wire into the connector and tighten the setscrews firmly into the place with
a small flat blade screwdriver. Do not over tighten.
9. Repeat steps 1-8 for each ADA Bus cable in the system.
Installation Step 14
Connecting the Suite 8 x 8 to the WH-2000 Wiring Harness
The WH-2000 wiring harness provides a central connection point for all ADA Bus components such
as the ISO 232, BRT-1, or CMB-1. There are also eight RJ-45 connectors for ADA keypads. Connect
the ADA Bus output of the Suite 8 x 8 to the input of the WH-2000. It is important to connect the
ADA Bus output of the Suite 8 x 8 to the first terminal labeled J1 on the WH 2000 to adequately
supply power to all the ADA Bus components and keypads.

Connecting Additional ADA Bus Components to the WH-2000
Connect the other ADA Bus components to the ADA Bus connectors 1, 2 and 3. You can also use the
loop output of the WH-2000 to another WH-2000 if necessary. However, a single WH-2000 should
be enough in most systems. If you do not need an additional WH-2000, you can use the loop output
connector on the WH-2000 for a fourth ADA Bus component.
Installation Step 16
Interfacing a Computer Based Control System to the ADA Bus
Connecting the ADA bus to a computer or computer based control system requires the addition of the
ADA ISO-232 serial communication isolation box. The ISO-232 not only permits trouble free two-
way RS-232 communication, but it also provides the necessary isolation and prevents ground loops in
the control system from generating noise in the Suite 8 x 8’s audio circuitry. To connect the ISO-232
into the system:
1. Use a standard serial cable to connect the RS-232 serial output DB-9 connector from the computer
or computer based control system to the DB-9 connector on the ISO-232. Note that Pin 5 is
Ground, Pin 2 =Control, and Pin 3 = Feedback.
2. Connect a terminated ADA Bus cable from the ISO-232 to the Suite 8 x 8 or WH 2000 wiring
harness.

Terminating Cat 5 wire with RJ-45 Connectors
Terminating Cat 5 cable with RJ-45 connectors can vary depending on the jacks and crimper used,
please refer to the instructions that accompany the connectors and crimper you prefer using. Simply
follow the 568-B Cat 5 wiring diagram below. Do not use crossover type cables when connecting
ADA keypads.
Installation Step 18
Connecting the ADA Keypads to the WH-2000
The MC-5000 and MC-5011 keypads are connected to the WH-2000 wiring harness with Cat 5
cable terminated with RJ-45 connectors. This makes it easier to pull wire to all the eight zones of a
Suite 8 x 8. Each WH-2000 has eight RJ-45 connectors and four ADA Bus connections. If necessary,
WH-2000s can be daisy chained together for additional ADA Bus components and keypads.

AC Power Connection
Connect the detachable IEC-65 AC power cable to the AC receptacle. Once you are sure that the
power switches to the Suite 8 x 8 and power amplifiers are in the off (down) position, Plug the AC cord
into a live AC outlet.

Configuring the Suite 8 x 8 with the PCOS Testing Program
The Suite 8 x 8 PC control program was developed to help configure and program the Suite 8 x 8
system for use with external control components such as ADA keypads as well as third party computer
control systems from AMX, Vantage, and Crestron. All control functions are emulated in this program
including source selection, volume, mute, tone controls, and party and page grouping.
Loading the Suite 8 Control Testing Program
The Suite 8 Control Tester program is included on a 3.5” floppy disc with your Suite 8 x 8. In order to
use the program, you’ll need to load onto your computer’s hard drive. To load the program:
1. Load the 3.5” floppy disc into your computer
2. Double click on My Computer on your computer’s desktop
3. Double click on the icon for the 3.5” floppy disc
4. Drag the Suite 8 x 8 Tester Folder to the desired location anywhere on your C: drive.
Opening the Suite 8 x 8 Tester Program
1. Double click on the folder that contains the Suite 8 x 8 Tester.
2. Locate the icon for the program file called ADA Suite 8 x 8 Tester.
3. Double click on the ADA icon to open the program.
Configuration Page
When the Suite 8 x 8 tester program is first opened, the main configuration page is displayed. It is here
where you first set up communication from the PC to the Suite 8 x 8.
Setting Com Port
Insure that the correct COM port is selected for the PC you are using. It will typically be COM 1 if the
PC is not communicating properly with the Suite 8 x 8, the program will default to the demo mode. On
the opening configuration page of the program, select the necessary appropriate COM port.
Setting the Baud Rate
When the correct COM port is selected, the current baud rate (1,200 or 19,200) will be highlighted.
While in the configuration page, you can check all the inputs and all the rooms in the Input/Output
section. You can also check the internal software version with the global version request function.

ASCII Communication
When the Suite 8 x 8 control program is communicating properly with the Suite 8 x 8, a corresponding
ASCII code is displayed. This feedback code appears along the top of the program window in response
to the control code being sent. Further, when a command has been selected, the corresponding control
button will change from gray to red.
Room Control Page
After selecting the Room Control page, you can control all of the audio parameters for each room.
Select any of the eight room numbers with the pull-down room window. Once the room is selected,
the numeric fields for volume, maximum volume, paging volume, treble and bass will be displayed at
their current level. Other values are also displayed such as all off, room off, or current audio input as well
as turn-on option, stereo-L/R mode, tone control settings on/off, party groupings and page groupings.
The image below details the entire Room Control page.
Whenever you select any function in the Room Control Page, the active button will turn red. To
update the PC’s display with this rooms status, you will need to press the square red button located in
the lower left-hand corner of the window. If you select the “Request info after selection”, the page will
be updated automatically.
Input Selection
To select a source within each room, you can press the input up or down button, or you can access the
source directly by selecting input buttons 1 through 8.
Volume Control
Volume is controlled in two ways, there is the volume up and down commands that raise and lower
volume levels from 0-40. You can also do a volume direct command that enters a value using the slider
control as the slider is released.
Maximum Volume Level
This setting prevents the rooms volume from ever exceeding beyond a preset maximum level. To set
the maximum volume level, simply position the slider to the desired position.
Volume Presets
There are four volume presets. To store a preset for a specific volume level, set the volume to that level
and then press either one of the four volume preset store buttons. To recall a volume preset, press the
corresponding recall button. Volume preset number 1 is recalled when the zone turns on providing that
the zone is set to turn on with recall 1.
Mute Commands
Again, there are two options for mute. The mute on command engages mute, while the unmute
command returns sound. Repeated pressing of the toggle button will switch between mute and unmute.

Bass, Mid & Treble Control
Bass, Mid, and Treble are controlled in two ways, there is the standard up and down commands which
will raise and lower bass, mid and treble levels over a range from -12 dB to +12 dB (-12 dB to + 16 dB
for bass) with 0 dB being flat. Tones levels are stepped numerically in two dB increments. There are
also tone direct commands that you can enter using the slider control.
Loudness & Stereo Enhancement Filters
There are two additional filters associated with tones. The loudness filter engages additional bass. The
stereo enhancement filter opens the stereo imaging of the sound stage.
Tone Presets
There are four tone presets. To store a preset for a specific tone setting, set the tone controls to the
desired levels and then press one of the four tone preset store buttons. To recall a tone preset, press the
corresponding recall button. The Loudness and Stereo Enhancement settings are also be stored into
each of the four presets when setting tones into preset.
Zone Turn-On Preset
Each room of the Suite 8 x 8 can be set to either turn on to its last used state or to Turn On With Recall
1. When recalling with preset 1, Volume Preset 1, Tone Preset 1, and Balance Preset 1 are all recalled
as the zone turns on. This provides the ability to store ideal acoustic characteristics when a room is first
turned on. This setting also prevents a room from coming on with inappropriate volume, bass, treble, or
balance settings, even if these settings where used the last time the room was on. Note that the tone
controls, loudness, stereo enhancement, and mute status are also active when Turn On With Recall 1
is chosen.
Balance Control
The Balance function allows you to change the relative level of each channel toward the left or right up
to 40 dB in 1 dB increments, the Equal button centers between right and left channels. There are two
balance presets. To store a balance preset, set the balance control to the desired level and then press one
of the two store buttons. To recall the balance level, press the appropriate Recall button. Balance preset
number one is recalled when the zone turns on providing the zone is set to turn on to Recall 1.
Mono Selector
By selecting mono, both right and left channels from the input source are summed together. This
feature is useful in rooms where there may be space for only one speaker such as a sauna or shower so
you can still hear both channels of audio from the source.
Party Grouping
Party grouping has two useful features. The first is the ability for several zones to turn on to a single
source with one command. This is useful for entertaining, hence the name party groups”. You can
assign several rooms to any party group number, and call up the grouped rooms to the same source at a
preset level and tone setting with a single command. There are a total of four party groups available
with the Suite 8 x 8.

The second feature of party grouping can be used for multiple rooms that are physically connected
together. This is convenient when you’d like to group connected rooms together such as a foyer, living
room and dining room and be able to turn them all on from any one of the rooms. The MC-5000
keypad can be programmed to have the input source be changed in all the rooms in a party group when
you select any input within the party group.
Page Grouping
Page grouping is set and cleared on a per room basis much like party grouping. Paging groups 1-6 are
serially controlled. Paging group 7 is non-operational in the Suite 8 x 8. Paging group 8 is triggered via
a low voltage AC or DC source. Simply set the Page Grouping button for each paging group you want
the room to be included in during a page.
Paging Volume Level
The volume level for pages is independent of the rooms volume level and is set by the slider control.
When a page is engaged, the room ramps to that volume level, the tone controls are set to flat, and the
filters are turned off. When the page is released, the room returns to the previous levels and input. If the
room was off, it will return to the off state. The left and right balance settings will also be equal.
Group 8 Page Release Time
When you assign rooms into page group 8, you initiate a page by applying an AC or DC voltage across
pins 4 and 5 of the paging connector. When the voltage is applied, the source that was playing will be
interrupted as long as the voltage is applied. The Page release time slider lets you keep the paging
circuit active for a predetermined time even after the voltage is removed. This is handy if your paging
trigger key comes from a momentary voltage source because the source that was playing would come
back on the instant the voltage is removed. You can set the paging release time to as much as 99
seconds after the paging trigger voltage is removed.
Global Room Control Page
The global room control tab features both party group and paging triggers as well as the input level trim
controls. The red button in the lower right hand corner is the update information request button.
Party Buttons
Pressing any of the four Party buttons will engage all the rooms assigned to the group. This feature
allows you to turn on several rooms at a preset level and tone settings with the single press of a button.
As described earlier, there are four separate party groups that can be engaged.
Input Level Trim Adjustment
The trim level adjustment can lower the input of level of a source component. This feature allows you
to match the levels of all the sources so they have the same apparent loudness. To set the input trim,
first determine which source is the softest and then reduce the other louder sources to match the
softest source. The trim adjustments should only be used to match source levels when first setting up
the Suite 8 x 8. We dont recommend using this command in a typical command string.
Paging Groups
You can page the paging groups that you set up in the Room Control page with the six paging group
buttons. You also have the choice of direct pages to a specific room with the direct page function.

Paging Control Page
The paging control section permits you to simulate paging triggers. The first six triggers are only
controlled serially. A control code needs to be issued in order to activate paging triggers 1 through 6.
Paging group 8 is the low voltage trigger paging group, hardwired directly to the back of the Suite 8 x
8. When engaging any of the paging groups, you can remove a room from being paged by selecting the
page all except the desired room number pull down window. You can also activate paging to a single
room on this page. For direct paging, select the room number and then press the page button. When a
page is activated, you must turn paging off before rooms return to their previous state. Once a page is
initiated, it will remain on until it is turned off again. In the case of trigger 8, the paging turns off when
the external trigger is removed. If paging is on, there are two ways to turn it off. If a room is being
paged, selecting an alternate source input will turn the paging off for just that room. You can also reset
the system by turning the master power switch off on the front of the Suite 8 x 8. Note: you can create
an all room page by selecting Page room 99.

Navigating the Control Display-Left Knob
1. Pressing the left knob: Moves the cursor to select volume and tone parameters. The cursor blinks
over the first letter of each parameter.
2. Rotating the left knob: Adjusts the level of the parameter the cursor is blinking on.
NOTE: Room must be on for tone controls and volume to operate
3. If you do not press or rotate the knob within thirty seconds, the cursor reverts to Volume control.
VOL: (Volume Level) Increases or decreases volume for room selected.
BASS: (Bass Level) Increases or decreases bass level for room selected.
MID: (Midrange Level) Increases or decreases midrange for room selected.
TREB: (Treble Level) Increases or decreases treble for room selected.
LD: (Loudness Contour On of Off ) Clockwise=On, Counterclockwise=Off.
SE: (Stereo Enhancement) Clockwise=On, Counterclockwise=Off.
ST/MN (Stereo/Mono) Clockwise=Stereo Counterclockwise=Mono.
TONE (Tone Preset Recall 1-4, Flat) Clockwise=Recall Ascending, Counterclockwise=Recall
descending.
Navigating the Control Display-Center Knob
1. Rotating the Center Input Knob: Sequentially scrolls through all eight inputs then off.
2. Pressing the Center Input Knob: Selects the input that is displayed in the second row. Once the
knob is pressed and the selection made, the chosen input becomes active and the top row also
displays the active input. Pressing the knob when OFF is displayed turns the room off and * ROOM
OFF is displayed. Note: If you have installed a CMB-I clock module, instead of * ROOM OFF,
this line will display the date and time instead of ALL OFF: i.e.: *FEB 25, 2003 12:30 PM.
3. Holding the Center Input Knob: To turn off all rooms rotate the Center Input knob and scroll to the
Off mode, then press and hold the Center Input knob for four seconds. ALL OFF is then dis
played on the top row to indicate that all rooms are turned off.
Navigating the Control Display-Right Knob
1. Rotating the Right Room Knob: Sequentially changes the active room. As you scroll through the
rooms, all the settings for that room (volume, tone, etc.) are also displayed. NOTE: You can limit
the amount of room numbers in the Setup Menu.
2. Pressing the Right Room Knob: Pressing the knob toggles the input mode through NORMAL,
PARTY 1, 2, 3 or 4. When in any party mode, any input selection executed will be a party command.
The NORMAL mode only sets the source for the selected room

Holding the Right Room Knob: for fifteen seconds to enter the Setup Menu. Once the setup
menu is displayed, rotate the left knob to move cursor to each code number, and then rotate the Center
Input knob to change each of the four code numbers until 1867 is displayed. The display will then
change to show all the available setup parameters. Note: you can escape the setup menu by selecting
the <M main menu button.

Setting Up MC-5011 Keypads for Use with the Suite 8 x 8
The MC-5011 Keypad fits into a single-gang box with a Decora bezel and is wired using standard Cat.
5 cable with RJ-45 connectors on each end. It is then connected into one of the eight RJ-45 connectors
in the WH-200 wiring harness. There are eight standard pre-made source formats listed here:
Note: Each source listed above corresponds to Source inputs one through eight on the Suite 8 x 8.
Custom formats are also available at an additional charge. However, you are limited to three characters
to describe each source name.
The MC-5011 features a bank of twelve DIP Switches. Switches 1 and 2 determine system model.
Switch 3 sets baud rate (1,200,19,200); Switch 4 sets light dimming, Switch 5, 6, and 7 set source
control, and switches 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 set room number. There are also two removable jumpers on
the MC 5011. One controls the IR receiver and the second jumper turns the LED’s off when the
system is off. With jumper is set to night mode, when the room is on, the keypad functions as normal:
the selected source is red, while all other buttons are green. When the room is off but the system is still
on elsewhere, all buttons are off with the exception of the OFF button, which will glow red, indicating
the system is still on somewhere. When the system is off, all buttons are off. This chart illustrates the
basic settings of the MC-5011 in a Suite 8 x 8 system: More detailed information about the MC-5011
is included with the keypad.
