Legrand Impedance Matching Volume Control - 364520-01 Installation guide

Type
Installation guide
1. Introduction
The OnQ Impedance Matching Volume Controls, P/N 364520-01
and -03, are meant to be used in a multiple speaker distributed
sound system. These volume controls enable more pairs of
speakers to be connected to an amplifier than the amplifier could
normally accommodate (due to impedance matching ability).
The impedance matching volume controls mate perfectly with
parallel audio distribution devices such as the OnQ 6 Room
Audio Module (P/N 364454-01).
2. Description
The OnQ Impedance Matching Volume Controls occupy a single
gang of an electrical box and are offered in white and ivory in an attractive decorator style. They have wiring
blocks that disconnect for easy wiring and offer impedance matching selection via a convenient front mounted
selector located under the volume control knob. It is recommended that they be installed in a mud ring such as
the OnQ Single Gang New Construction Mud Ring (P/N 364524-01), or an electrical box that is 20 cubic inches
or greater (OnQ also offers dual gang and retro fit mud rings).
3. Installation
It is recommended that a minimum of 16 gauge 4 conductor wire be run for most
applications from the distribution, such as the OnQ 6 Room Audio Module, to the
volume control. Different gauge wire can, and should, be used based upon the distance
of the intended run or quality of installation (see Gauge Selection Chart) . It is
recommended that wire gauge not be less than 18 gauge. The impedance matching
volume controls can accommodate wire from 18 to 14 gauge.
A. Run x/4 conductor (x=gauge preference) stranded speaker wire from the
distribution area to the volume control. Run a minimum of 18 gauge 2
conductor wire from the volume control to the speakers. See Gauge
Selection Chart for help in determining what gauge speaker wire should be
used for your installation.
B. Strip 3/16ths of an inch from all conductors (feed from distribution and runs to
speakers) and insert into the wiring block of the volume control (see Figure 1).
BE SURE NOT TO REVERSE THE
AMPLIFIER OR SPEAKER CONNECTIONS
OR DAMAGE TO THE AMPLIFIER COULD
RESULT! Tighten down screws onto wire and
give them a tug to insure there properly
fastened.
C. Install the volume control into the mud
ring/electrical box and remove knob.
4. Impedance Matching/Multiplier Setting
A. Determine how many pairs of speakers will be
powered to the same amplifier (parallel).

B. Determine the load capability of the amplifier
(i.e. 8, 4 or 2). This will be listed in the
specification of the amplifier. It yields how
"low" of a load the amplifier can safely run
before damage or over heating occurs.
NOTE: Impedance varies with frequency, so
in actuality, no load is seen as a stable (8, 4
or 2 ohms); it varies as frequency varies.
(This is why some of the higher selections
were made in the Multiplier chart.)
C. After load capacity is determined see the
Multiplier Chart to determine the proper
multiplier setting that all the volume controls
will need to be set to. NOTE - This chart
refers to 8 speakers. If the speakers
being used are some other impedance, you
must calculate the parallel impedance and
multiply it by the appropriate multiplier (x1,
x2, x4 or x8) to match the load to the amplifiers capabilities.
NOTE: OnQ offers 8 In-Ceiling speakers (P/N 364518-01) and In-wall Speakers
(P/N 364519-01).
Use this formula to determine impedance: Two 8 speakers in parallel equal 4.
NOTE: The
x-1
is a key on a scientific calculator; it stands for “reciprocal”.

D. Loosen the Hex nut on the front, adjust the Multiplier ring to
the correct setting, hold in place and tighten the nut.
(See Figure 3)
NOTE: Volume control steps will vary depending upon the
multiplier's setting (see below).
5. Operation
Multiplier setting of 1 = 11 steps from lock to lock.
2 = 10 steps from lock to lock.
3 = 9 steps from lock to lock.
4 = 8 steps from lock to lock.
NOTE: Rotating the volume control fully counter clockwise will yield
no power going to the speakers (off).
