metal strapping. Strapping may spring back, causing injury.
WARNING
To prevent possible injury, use the steel strapping cutter with caution to ensure
the strap does not spring back.
CAUTION
When lifting the Biomek NXP instrument, grasp it only from positions on the base
casting. Do not grasp the ends of the light curtain that extend across the front of
the instrument.
CAUTION
The back of the instrument is heavier than the front. Take care not to lift the front
so high that it causes the instrument to fall backward.
CAUTION
The Biomek NXP instrument will overhang the edges of a 36 in. x 30 in. (92 cm x
77 cm) bench. Make sure there are no obstacles that will interfere with placement
of the instrument.

CHAPTER 1
Preparing the Site
Preparation Overview
This preinstallation manual details the necessary site preparation required prior to the installation
of the Biomek NXP Laboratory Automation Workstation.
For preinstallation information for optional Cytomat incubators and storage units and other
optional integrated devices, Preparing Cytomat Devices.
Models
The information in this manual generally refers to both configurations of the Biomek NXP
instrument; if specific conditions apply to only one configuration, this manual identifies these
configurations as follows:
NX-MC — Biomek NXP Multichannel Laboratory Automation Workstation
NX-S8 — Biomek NXP Span-8 Laboratory Automation Workstation
Site Preparation
Pay careful attention to the specifications and requirements described in this manual. Accurate and
timely preparation allows the Beckman Coulter Field Service Engineer to install the Biomek NXP
instrument efficiently upon arrival. Appropriate site preparation includes making sure that:
System specification requirements are met when the Biomek NXP instrument is installed (See
Biomek NXP System Specifications).
Adequate work space is set up for the instrument and automation controller (see Work Area
Minimum Dimensions).
The bench holding the Biomek NXP system supports the total installed weight of the
Biomek NXP instrument and any peripheral equipment (see Component Weights). The bench
must also be level and stable so that normal operations of the Biomek NXP instrument do not
cause the bench to shift, jerk, or sway.
Electrical supply and power quality are adequate for operation (see Electrical Requirements).
Sufficient air and vacuum are available for operating the entire system (see Air, Vacuum, and
System Fluid Requirements).
Appropriate degassed system fluid is available for a Biomek NXP instrument equipped with a
Span-8 Pod (see System Fluid Requirements (NXP-S8 only)).
After you have prepared the site, unpacking the instrument and placing it on the workbench ready
for installation are your responsibilities.
