Note
This manual is to describe the general concept and architecture of Remote Administration Software for THINTUNE Thin
Clients THINTUNE Manager. Please make sure to have ready your THINTUNE manual as well. It is the nature of remote
administration software that lots of settings are already described in the THINTUNE manual. Therefore this manual
considers THINTUNE Manager settings only. Some sections of this manual will refer to according sections of the
THINTUNE manual with more detailed descriptions. THINTUNE documentation is available at www.thintune.com.
1 Functionality
THINTUNE Manager in a new version completely was redesigned and now is applicable for LICA and THINTUNE Thin
Clients with a firmware release of 2.4.16 and above. THINTUNE Manager is a typical two tier Client/Server application
with two components where one is server component and the other the client module. The server component which is
THINTUNE OS Management Server is installed as a typical NT-service. THINTUNE Management Console is the client
module and is installed as an application and basically offers you the GUI. This architecture allows you to start remote
administration on either one or more client workstations.
Basically the principle of remote administration is to group terminals which offers you to completely rebuild the logical
hierarchy of an enterprise. Each group will be assigned with TC configurations where you will be able to of course change
assignments for individual Thin Clients even if the are in the same group. One special feature of THINTUNE Manager is to
let you build sub-groups!
1.1 THINTUNE OS Management Server
THINTUNE OS Management Server Service is not only to establish communications to THINTUNE clients but to
assign configuration data to all Thin Clients while the boot procedure. This service basically manages both: all Thin
Clients which are available and their configuration as well. Since communication between THINTUNE terminals
and THINTUNE OS Management Server are established automatically, there is no further configuration needed on
at individual THINTUNE client. All communication runs in Layer 3 which automatically lets you detect all
THINTUNE clients in the local (physical) subnet. Of course this automatic detection of Thin Clients is not available
once communications between the terminals and THINTUNE OS Management Server Service is running through
routers or firewalls. To offer remote administration for remote terminals via firewalls or routers you either have the
choice to manually enter the IP address of the THINTUNE OS Management Server into the terminal (Global
Network Settings), or to set up an independent server for THINTUNE OS Management in each subnet. Installation
of independent management servers especially is useful if there are either lots of terminals to remotely be
administered or if you want to use Wake on Lan with THINTUNE Manager. For more information please refer to
the THINTUNE manual.
Page 4
) Note
Configuration changes are assigned to a THINTUNE Thin Client
while boot or reboot.
) Note
To remotely manage THINTUNE Thin Clients which are located in a
LAN there is no further configuration needed on the terminals. If
your terminals are located in a remote site which is connected to
the server via a router and/or a firewall you either need to
manually enter the IP address of the THINTUNE OS Management
Server into the terminal (Global Network Settings), or to set up an
independent server for THINTUNE OS Management in each subnet
) Note
If you will use THINTUNE Manager for remote administration
please be notified that all new THINTUNE Thin Clients
automatically will be assigned the configuration of the group
which is defined as the default group in THINTUNE Manager.
Therefore it makes sense to create a new group and exclude this
group from automatic assignments (“unmanaged“). Make this
your default group.
1.2 Installation
Installation is very easy. Just start the installation procedure and follow the instructions of the installation
manager. You should use Standard Installation. On completion of the installation process a new program group
THINTUNE Manager is available in the Start Menue.

1.3 THINTUNE Management Console
1.3.1 First Start and Configuration of Server Connections
When the Management Console of THINTUNE Manager is launched for the first time you necessarily have to
take care that the Management Console is connected to the Browsing Service of THINTUNE Manager.
The Management GUI is divided in two sections: The left section includes all the groups in which you might
insert all THINTUNE TCs. The right section offers you information and properties of individual terminals.
As already mentioned with the first start of THINTUNE Manager you necessarily have to connect with the
Management Server which is available for the relating subnet. A right mouse click into the group section of the
Management GUI (left section) offers you some more features. Select “New Server“ and enter name and IP
address of the Management Server. The Management Server is the server which runs THINTUNE Manager
services for the desired subnet.
If name and IP address are entered correctly the management service for this subnet is available and will be
displayed. To connect to the server please right-click onto the new entry and select the “connect“-option. The
Locate button lets you scan your network for new terminals. All terminals which are detected will be displayed
in the right section of your Management-GUI.
Page 6
If there are multiple THINTUNE Management Server available in your network (e.g. for different subnets) you
now might enter the remaining servers into the Management GUI.
If THINTUNE Manager is restarted all servers which you entered will remain available. There is no need to
reenter them. However, to receive a list of Thin Clients which are available in your network you again need to
connect your Management Console to the Management Server (right mouse-click and then select the
“Connect“-option).
1.3.2 Available Client Information
Online Indicates if a client is powered on or off.
Configuration Displays in which group the client is included. If a terminal is marked as “individual“
this means that the device has not been assigned a dedicated group configuration.
Host-Name Displays the name of a terminal.
MAC-Address Displays the MAC-address of a terminal.
Serial Number Displays the serial number of a terminal.
) Note
This option is available only for THINTUNE Thin Clients which were
shipped since Q2/2002.
Model Displays the hardware-revesion of a terminal.
IP-Address IP-address of a unit.
IP-Configuration Indicates if the terminal is assigned a static IP address or a dynamic IP-address (DHCP)
Firmware Displays the firmware version which is installed in the terminal.

2 Management Server Options
This section describes available options for the Management Server. To get hold of these options point your mouse onto
the relating server entry and click right.
Info Displays information related to the selected Management Server.
New Group Lets you create a new sub-group.
Edit Lets you edit the connection params for the Management Server.
Locate Terminals Lets you scan the selected subnet for THINTUNE Thin Clients
Subnet Log Display available logfiles. Logfiles are created on each firmware upgrade. For more detailed
information please refer to chapter 5.2. of this manual.
Disconnect Disconnects you from the Management Server

Server Settings
General
General
Lets you define a password for the Management Console.
Firmware Update
Defines the address of the firmware server. This is needed if you want to perform remote
firmware updates.
Page 8
Logging
Reserved for future options.
Proxy Server
Lets you define a proxy server for firmware updates. This is needed in case there is a proxy
server between THINTUNE clients and the Firmware Server.
Set Default Group
Lets you define a default group for the selected subnet. THINTUNE Thin Clients which log
on the THINTUNE Manager Server for the first time automatically are assigned to this
group.
Delete Subnet Database
Deletes the selected subnet
Terminal Management
Use group settings
Lets you define if Thin Clients which are included in the selected group should be assigned
a configuration or not.
) Note
The “Managed“-option by default is switched off! This is to
prevent your Thin Clients from being assigned a (new)
configuration immediately after THINTUNE Manager is installed.
Therefore this option needs to be activated if desired.
Use individual settings
Lets you decide whether the terminals in your subnet will be assigned a configuration or
will be set up individually.
Not managed
Terminals will not be assigned any configuration from the administration software.

3 Grouping Options
THINTUNE Manager offers you to pool your THIN Clients in groups. Therefore THINTUNE Manager lets you configure
user-defined groups which are directly assigned to server-entries. Additionally you might set up sub-groups as well. This
is needed if you have to manage a variety of different terminal configurations for different departments for example.
Please be notified that the grouping concept of THINTUNE Manager is capable of a hierachical structure. This means that
a group bequests ist properties to a underlying sub-group. However there is no effect if properties of a group are changed
later on.
Info Displays information related to the selected Group.
New Group Lets you create a new sub-group.
Edit Lets you edit the connection params for the Management Server
