Chapter 0 Introduction
This Service Manual is intended to facilitate installation, trouble-
shooting and repair of the Intermec EasyCoder 501 series of print-
ers in the version delivered at the date of publishing. Thus, all
information on the Intermec Fingerprint rmware is based on ver-
sion 6.14. The on-going product improvement can be followed in
the Printer Technical Bulletins from Intermec.

Please note that the operations described in this manual only should
be carried out by skilled and authorized personnel with proper
training and full understanding of written English. The printers
contain wires and circuits with up to 380 VAC, which implies the

It is assumed that the reader possesses reasonable skills in mechan-
ics and electronics and is familiar with the Intermec Fingerprint
programming language and its related standard application pro-
grams. It is also assumed that the reader has access to the standard
tools of an electronics workshop.

1.1 Identifi cation
The EasyCoder 501 printers come in four different main models,
which easily can be identifi ed by their external appearance.
EasyCoder 501 S (Standard)
has a single Print button on its front panel.
EasyCoder 501 E (Enhanced) and 501 LL (LinerLess)
have a setup keyboard with 22 programmable keys.
EasyCoder 501 SA (Stand-Alone)
has a full QWERTY keyboard with additional control keys adapted
for the Intermec Stand-Alone program.

The machine sign on the printer's rear plate provides information
on type, part number, and serial number.
The voltage switch indicates the mains voltage for which the
printer is set up (115 or 230 VAC). Always check this switch before
connecting the printer!
You can also detect if the printer is tted with any optional inter-
face board by means of the additional connectors on the rear
plate:

A Paper Cutter Unit is easily recognized by the extension on the
printer's front, where the cutter replaces the front hatch (see Chap-
ter 12). The EasyCoder 501 LinerLess has a spcial cutter.
By opening the front hatch (or the optional cutter unit tted in its
place), you can check if the printer is tted with a Memory Card
Adapter (see Chapter 13) and/or a Label Taken Sensor (see Chap-
ter 11).

Finally, you may want to inspect the electronics compartment. To
do so, you will have to remove the left-hand cover plate.
For safety reasons, we recommend that you switch off the
printer and remove the power cord fi rst.
(All high-voltage wires are insulated, but could be damaged and
should therefore be inspected at service.)
Using a #T10 Torx screwdriver, remove the four screws at the
bottom of the cover plate and the four screws along the upper edge,
hidden under the right-hand cover.
In the electronics compartment you may check, for example:
Type of CPU-Board tted?
Fingerprint EPROM version?
Con guration EPROM type?
Optional ROM-expansion EPROMs tted?
Correct type of GAL circuits?
Optional Real-Time Clock circuit (RTC) tted?
Type of interface on "uart1:"?
Optional interface board tted?
Type of interface(s) on interface board?
Refer to the descriptions of the CPU-board and the various inter-
face boards in Chapters 17-23.

The printhead density can be checked in two ways:
Inspect the label stuck onto the outer side of the printhead,
which gives information on part number and date of
manufacture. Refer to the EasyCoder 501 Spare Parts
Catalog for part numbers.
If the printer is working, you can print Test Label #1 in either
the Test Mode (see Chapter 25), in the Setup Mode (see
Appendix 1 or the Installation & Operation Manual).
If the printer is working and possible startup program can be
interrupted, the type of program in the printer can be identi ed.
Connect printer and computer, open a suitable communication
program, and start up the printer in the immediate mode of Inter-
mec Fingerprint. The instructions FILES "rom:", FILES "ram:"
and FILES "card1:" allows you to check what les the various
parts of the printer's memory contains. The statements FONTS and
IMAGES can be used for the same purpose regarding fonts and
images. Use the VERSION$ function to check version of the Inter-
mec Fingerprint rmware.
The Intermec Fingerprint utility program PRSETUP.PRG allows
you to view the current setup values on the screen and also to pro-
duce a printout copy. You can also check the setup in the Setup
Mode or Test Mode, or by means of Intermec Shell.
If the printer does not work, you can get some clues from the
labels on the EPROM packages. You may also need to interview
the user.
By now, you should have a fairly good idea what kind of printer
you will be working with. Compare with the list of standard fea-
tures and options on next page.

2. Front and Keyboard
2.1 Front
The moulded front part is attached to the center section using four
#T20 screws and to the bottom plate by two #T20 screws. The
front moulding is provided with holes for mounting a cutter con-
nector (4-pin female DIN-type) and a memory card adapter.
At the top part of the front moulding, there is a cavity for the
keyboard/display assy. This assembly is affi xed by means of
two grub screws which can be loosened using a 2 mm hexagon
wrench.

2.2 Display/Keyboard
The keyboard/display assy. is connected to P-603 at the upper right
corner of the CPU-board via a 20-p at cable. This cable must be
disconnected before the keyboard/display can be removed.
The keyboard/display must be manipulated carefully when it is
lifted out of its cavity. Do not use any force! If the assembly seems
to be stuck, open the right-hand door and remove the left-hand
cover to check that the grub screws do not interfere with the brack-
ets.
We also recommend you to open the right-hand door and remove
the left-hand cover before you start to t the keyboard/display assy.
back into the front moulding, since it makes it easier to align the
brackets with the grub screws.
The keyboard/display assy. consists of a plate with two brackets, a
self-adhesive keyboard, an interchangeable slide, and a keyboard
interface pcb. with a 2 × 16 character LCD and three LEDs. The
keyboard is connected to P-3 on the interface pcb. via a semi-trans-
parent cable running through a slot in the plate. The cable to the
CPU board is permanently af xed to the interface pcb.
The contrast of the LCD display can be adjusted by means of the
potentiometer WR-1 on the CPU board. The potentiometer can
be accessed via a hole in the rear plate, next to the communica-
tion port "uart1:", see Chapter 4.2. The display should be adjusted
according to the prevailing light conditions when viewed from a
normal working position.

2.4 Slides
The slide can be removed through a slot at the right side of the
keyboard using a small pair of pliers. The slide can be replaced by
another one, for example to adapt the printer for a certain language
or a special application. There are three different standard slides
with English text as shown below
