1.3 Scope of information
These Operating Instructions contain information on how to in-
stall, commission and operate the device. Official and legal re-
gulations must always be observed. It is not possible to
provide comprehensive information on all these requirements
in this document. In Germany, for example, the Trade Associati-
on Directives (ZH 1/597 and ZH 1/281) in particular must be
observed. Further information on health and safety and opto-
electronic protection equipment can be obtained directly from
your local SICK distributor, e. g. Safe Machines (SICK guideli-
nes on the operation of optoelectronic protection equipment).

The devices can only perform their safety function if they are
used correctly and integrated into the process in a failsafe
manner.
The WSU/WEU Photoelectric Safety Switch meets the require-
ments of Type 4 Safety Devices as stipulated in EN 61 496-1
and pr EN 50 100-2.
2.1 General safety advice and
protective measures
1. National and international regulations apply for the operati-
on of non-contact protection equipment as well as for com-
missioning and regular maintenance checks, in particular

It is the responsibility of the manufacturers and operators
of the machine on which SICK protection equipment is used
to discuss all safety legislation, which may apply, with the
responsible authorities and to observe these rules and re-
gulations.
2. Furthermore, our notes, in particular the Test Regulations
(see section ‘Tests’) in the Technical Description or these
Operating Instructions (such as use, assembly, installation

or integration in the machine control unit) must be obser-
ved.
3. The tests must be performed by qualified experts or by
specially authorised and instructed personnel and must be
documented in such a way as to be able to be viewed and
understood at any time.
4. Our Operating Instructions shall be given to the employee
(operator) working at the machine on which SICK protection
equipment is used. The employee shall be trained for his
job and operation of the equipment by an expert.
5. The Test Protocol relating to use of the non-contact safety
device is printed at the end of the English section of these
Operating Instructions. Acceptance testing is performed on
the basis of that protocol.
6. Mounting and connection may only be done by qualified
personnel. Before commissioning, the mounting and con-
nection must be inspected by the operator’s responsible
staff member, as is required by the standards and directi-
ves of the specific country.

Entry/exit safeguarding using a WSU/WEU 26/2
The following key points are important for correct operation:
2.2 Application Areas
The WSU/WEU 26/2 Photoelectric Safety Switch is used as an
access safety system to hazardous areas around machinery or
plant. The device is securely mounted in the access area at a
pre-determined safe distance from the hazardous point. When
the light beam is interrupted the device transmits an emergen-
cy stop signal to the machinery or plant.

2.3 Intended use of the device
The WSU/WEU Photoelectric Safety Switch may only be used as
specified in Section 2.2 Application Areas. The device may be
operated only in accordance with its technical specifications.
Any other use or modification – including during mounting and
installation – will invalidate any guarantee and any claim
against SICK AG.
2.4 Environmental compatibility
The WSU/WEU Photoelectric Safety Switch is designed to have
the lowest possible impact on the environment. It neither emits
nor contains any environmentally damaging substances, and
consumes minimal quantities of energy and resources.
Always consider the environment in everything you do at your
workplace. This also means complying with the following in-
structions concerning disposal.
Disposal
Unusable systems or systems beyond repair must be disposed
of in accordance with the regulations on refuse disposal cur-
rently valid in the respective country.
The aluminium housing must be recycled. If possible, remove
the plastic front panel.
All electronic components can be simply dismantled. They
should be disposed of as special waste. SICK AG will not ac-
cept back unusable systems or systems beyond repair.
When dismantling and disposing of components, provisions re-
lating to occupational safety, the environment and disposal
should be observed.

3.1 System design
The WSU/WEU Photoelectric Safety Switch comprises the follo-
wing components:
! WSU Sender unit
! WEU Receiver unit
3.2 Mode of Operation
The WSU/WEU 26/2 Photoelectric Safety Switch consists of
one sender unit and one receiver unit. The WSU sender unit
emits a light beam, which is picked up by the WEU receiver
unit.
An interruption in the light beam by an object causes the out-
put relay to de-energize, which stops the machine.
The sender and receiver units are equipped with LEDs for func-
tion monitoring. Their function as a diagnostic element is set
out in Section 6 Commissioning.
Indicator diodes on the device signal the various operating mo-
des (see Section 6.2 Fault Diagnosis). However, the informati-
on that they display is not relevant to safety status. The
indicator diodes also serve as error diagnostic systems (see
Section 6.2 Fault Diagnosis).

Electrical connections must be made appropriate to device op-
tion (see Connection Schematics in the Appendix). With device-
connector options, pay attention to the coding denoted. It must
match the coding of the cable socket, thus preventing connec-
tion to an unsuitable version (other supply voltage, other ran-
ge).
Both contacts at the test input of the sender unit must be clo-
sed during operation. Testing (open for min. 75 ms and close
again) should be done with an uninterrupted light beam. This
causes the output relay to de-energize.
Switch off power!
Electrical connection of the WSU/WEU or modification may only
be carried out with power removed.
To connect the WSU/WEU with a PG thread, the housing lid
must be unscrewed.
Use both normally-open contacts!
At least two outputs must be connected to the control unit of
the machine being protected (Figs. 4, 5, 7, 9, Appendix). An
electromagnetic contact element (relay) must be connected to
each of the two outputs (normally-open contacts).

Use normally-open outputs!
In new factories, both normally-open outputs must be indepen-
dently supplied to two contact elements (e.g. contractors, re-
lays). The normally-closed output should be used only for
functions that are not directly safety-related.
In general, the normally-open contacts
should be used. However, in older
factories a normally-open / normally-
closed combination was selected.
This no longer conforms to present-
day safety requirements. Should the
WSU/WEU be installed in old factories,
both normally-open contacts should
be connected in series to the
normally-closed contact as a second
channel.
4.1 Testing
This enables a check to be made on the contact elements con-
nected. In the process, operation of the normally-closed con-
tacts will de-activate the sender. Testing is initiated during a
minimum open time (see Section 9 Technical Data).
Testing must be undertaken via machinery control in the safe
phase (e.g. a safe movement). If the test is unsuccessful, the
power-driven machine - initiated by the WEU - will receive a de-
energize signal from the machinery control system.
Use the testing function as described!
The test input must be used exclusively as described.

4.2 Spark suppression
Spark suppressors are required when using an
inductive load ...

permissible, and may result in unsafe operation.

4.3 Short-circuit monitoring
The cables from the output contacts are not monitored by the
WEU for short circuits.
Suitable measures
Suitable steps should be taken for monitoring short circuits.
These could be
! Short-circuit safe (protected) routing of cables from the WEU

! Screening output cables individually and connect screening
to 0 V
! Incorporating both contacts to differing voltage levels

4.4 Overvoltage protection (fuse)
A fuse must be provided for the control circuit. The fuse rating
must correspond to the maximum current draw of the output
relay.

Provisionally install the Photoelectric Safety Switch, coarsely
aligned. This alignment is done with the help of the sight groo-
ve on the upper section of the housing and the lateral beam
marking.
5.1 Safety distance
The WSU/WEU must be attached such that, if the light beam is
broken during hazardous movement of the machinery, the
point-of-operation can only be reached when this hazardous
movement has ceased. For this purpose, a safety distance S

proach speed of the personnel.
The machine stopping time must be determined by repeated
measurements under practical conditions. 1.6 m/s is the re-
commended approach speed.

5.2 Distance to reflective surfaces
Reflective surfaces located (placed or fixed) within the sender
and receiver range, may cause reflection and thus prevent an
obstacle from being reliably detected.
For this reason, a minimum distance "a" from reflective sur-
faces to the optical axis (linear connection between transmitter
and receiver) must be maintained (see illustration below). The
distance "a" is dependent on the distance between the sender
and receiver.

Instructions.

When using two WSU/WEU in a single safeguarding application,
interference must be prevented. Because the light beam of the
WSU diverges, the light-beam cross section increases the grea-

the following conditions must be observed when installing the
WSU/WEU (Fig. 10, Appendix).
5.3.1 Interference
The light beam from the WSU must be received only by the in-
tended WEU. To prevent interference from several adjacent
WSU/WEUs, the appropriate light beam diameters when moun-
ting the devices (Fig. 11, Appendix) must be taken into consi-
deration.
WSUs are available in two options ...
... for operating ranges 0.5 - 18 m and also 15 - 70 m. The
WSU for 15 - 70 m may not be used for operating ranges be-
low 15 m. The operating range is stated on the type plate.

The device is switched on by connecting the supply voltage to
the sender unit and to the receiver unit. The device is ready for
operation after approx. 2 s.
For more detailed information on this, see Technical Descripti-
on WSU/WEU 26/2.
6.1 Alignment using the indicator lights
Switch on the supply. The yellow LED on the WSU should light
up.
Align the modules with each other such that the green and yel-
low LEDs on the WEU light up.
For optimum alignment, determine the limits of the transmissi-
on and receiving range by pivoting the sender and receiver
units horizontally and vertically. When the device leaves its re-
spective optical range, the yellow LED on the WEU begins to
flash. Then fix the sender and receiver units in the middle of
the determined optical range.
