may only be used in conjunction with them.
Basis of this manual is the delivery of FW300-EX according to a previous configuration (e.g.
by means of the Technical Questionnaire from SICK) and a correspondingly delivery status
of the
FW300-EX ( supplied system documentation). If in doubt, please contact the SICK
service.
For optional deliverable purge air units apply in addition the related documents.

1.2 Main hazards
1.2.1 Hazards from hot and/or aggressive gases and/or high pressure
The transmitter/receiver unit is fitted directly on the gas-carrying duct. On equipment with
low hazard potential (no danger to health, ambient pressure, low temperatures), the
installation or removal can be performed while the equipment is in operation providing the
valid regulations and equipment safety notices are observed and suitable protective
measures are taken.
1.2.2 Hazards through electrical equipment
The FW300-EX measuring system is operational equipment for use in industrial high-
voltage current plants.
1.2.3 Hazards through laser beam
1.2.4 Hazards from explosive or flammable gases
The measurement system FW300-EX may be used only in accordance with the relevant
specification in hazardous areas.
WARNING: Danger by exhaust gas
Install/remove transmitter/receiver unit and reflector on equipment with
hazard potential (gases detrimental to health, hot, aggressive or explosive
gases or gas/dust mixtures, higher internal duct pressure) only when the
equipment is at a standstill.
WARNING:Danger through mains voltage
Disconnect mains lines before working on mains connections or parts car-
rying mains voltage.
Refit any contact protection removed before switching the mains voltage
back on again.
WARNING:Hazards through laser beam
Never look directly into the beam path
Do not point the laser beam at persons
Pay attention to laser beam reflections.
WARNING:Hazards from explosive or flammable gases
Use in hazardous areas only the FW300-EX device type which is specified
accordingly (

p. 10, §1.3).

concentrations in dust/gas mixtures.
Limitations for use
1.5 Responsibility of user
1.5.1 General information
Designated users
The FW300-EX measuring system may only be installed and operated by skilled
technicians who, based on their technical training and knowledge as well as knowledge of
the relevant regulations, can assess the tasks given and recognize the hazards involved.
These people must have detailed knowledge of operational risks such as by hot, toxic,
explosive or pressurized gases, gas-liquid mixtures, or other media as well as sufficient
knowledge of the measurement system by training.
WARNING:Explosion danger in hazardous areas
Use the measuring system in hazardous areas only according to the device
identificationI (

p. 10, §1.3).
Use the measurement system only within the temperature limits as speci-
fied in this operating instructions as well as on the nameplate.
The maximum values must not be exceeded also for brief periods.
Do not install sender/receiver unit and rotating reflector in lines, tanks or
other installation areas where explosive gas and / or dust mixtures may be
present.
For devices that are used in hazardous areas:
Installation, commissioning, maintenance and testing may be performed
only by experienced persons who have the knowledge of the rules and
regulations for hazardous areas, particularly:
–Types of protection
Installation Rules
–Zoning
Applicable standards (examples):
IEC 60079-14, Annex F: Knowledge, expertise and competency of
responsible persons, craftsmen and designers.

Correct use
Use the device only as described in these Operating Instructions. The manufacturer
bears no responsibility for any other use.
Observe all measures necessary for conservation of value, e.g. for maintenance and
inspection and/or transport and storage.
Do not remove, add or modify any components to or on the device unless described and
specified in the official manufacturer information. Otherwise
the device could become dangerous
the manufacturer’s warranty becomes void
invalidate the approval for use in hazardous areas.
Do not use damaged components or parts.
Special local conditions
Observe and adhere the local valid laws, regulations and plant-internal operating
instructions, especially on systems with an increased hazard potential (pressure pipes,
explosion protection zones).
Retention of documents
Operating Instructions belonging to the measuring system as well as equipment
documentation:
Keep at site for reference at all times
Pass it on to any new owner.
1.5.2 Safety information and protective measures
Protection devices
Behavior during purge air failure
The purge air supply serves to protect optical subassemblies fitted on the duct against hot
or aggressive gases. Leave the supply switched on when the equipment is at a standstill.
Optical subassemblies can be severely damaged in a short time if the purge air supply
fails.
NOTICE:
Suitable protection devices and safety equipment for persons must be
available according to the respective hazard potential and be used by the
personnel.
NOTICE:
The user must ensure that:
The purge air supply runs reliably and continuously.
Failure of the purge air supply is immediately detected (e.g. by using
pressure monitors)
Optical subassemblies are removed from the duct if the purge air supply
fails and the duct opening is closed off (e.g. with a flange cover)

Preventive measures for operating safety
Recognizing malfunctions
Every deviation from normal operation is to be regarded as a serious indication of a
functional impairment. These are, amongst others:
Warning displays (e.g. heavy contamination)
Large drifts in measured results
Increased power input
Higher temperatures of system parts
Monitoring devices triggering
Smells or smoke emission
Avoiding damage
NOTICE:
The user must ensure that:
Neither failures nor erroneous measurements can lead to operational
states that can cause damage or become dangerous
The specified maintenance and inspection tasks are carried out regularly
by qualified, experienced personnel.
NOTICE:
The operator must ensure the following to avoid malfunctions that can
indirectly or directly lead to injuries to persons or material damage:
The responsible maintenance personnel are present at any time and as
fast as possible
The maintenance personnel are adequately qualified to react correctly to
malfunctions of the measuring system and any resulting operational
interruptions (e.g. when used for measurement and control purposes)
The malfunctioning equipment is switched off immediately in case of doubt
and that switching off does not cause collateral malfunctions.
