Quick Start is recommended only for those users who are experienced with hardware and software
installation procedures. Quick Start is divided into two parts.
•Basics
This chapter gives detailed instructions on the initial installation steps that are required for all
CyberSWITCH configurations.
Connectivity
This chapter gives instructions for connecting two of our products together via PPP. Separate
instructions are provided for bridging, IP, IPX, and AppleTalk configurations.

INSTALLING HARDWARE
There is a possibility that your distributor has already completed hardware installation. If
hardware installation has not been completed, follow the instructions listed below.
WARNING:
Anytime you remove the module cover, make sure the power cord is not plugged in.
Failure to do so may result in personal injury or equipment damage.
1. Remove module cover.
2. Install adapters.
3. Attach LCD Cable to WAN adapter.
4. Install needed inter-board cables (for TDM and/or MVIP connections).
5. Replace module cover.
INSTALLING SOFTWARE
1. Insert system software diskette #1 into diskette drive and power on the machine.
2. Type the following command at the DOS prompt:
install
<return>
3. If you wish to review the Release Notes answer “y” to the prompt. Use <page down> and
<page up> to view sections of the Release Notes. At anytime you may press the <Esc> key to
continue with the installation.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation.
ACCESSING THE RELEASE NOTES
The Release Notes provide release highlights and important information related to this release that
should be reviewed before you begin the system’s installation and configuration.
An abbreviated set of these notes are in a file called REL_NOTE.TXT. To display them on the
system, enter the following command at the system prompt:

ACCESSING THE CYBERSWITCH
CONNECTING AN ADMINISTRATION CONSOLE
This section describes how to connect an administration console. You will use the console to control
the system.
The system supports two administration console options: local and remote. Both options will be
explained in this section. Follow the steps for the administration console option you will be using.
Note: Once the system is up and running, you may wish to connect to the console using Telnet.
Refer to the Remote Management chapter of the User’s Guide for additional information
concerning Telnet.

ONNECTING A LOCAL ADMINISTRATION CONSOLE
With a local administration console, the user creates a direct connection to the CyberSWITCH by
attaching a monitor and keyboard to the system. It is configured to support a PS/2-style keyboard
and a VGA 15-pin monitor. These are NOT supplied. This simple connection process is explained
below:
1. Attach keyboard plug to the keyboard connector located on the back of the system.
2. Attach monitor cable to the local monitor port located on the back of the system.
For the exact location of the keyboard connector and the local monitor port, refer to the platform
diagrams included in the Hardware Overview chapter of the User’s Guide.

ONNECTING A REMOTE ADMINISTRATION CONSOLE
A remote administration console gives the user the ability to operate the CyberSWITCH remotely.
To use the remote administration console option, you will need an IBM Compatible PC that runs
Carbon Copy, and the appropriate cabling. These cables are NOT supplied. Refer to the Remote
Management chapter of the User’s Guide for additional information concerning Carbon Copy.
You will also need the Manager diskette to connect the remote administration console option. This
software is available (as an option) when you order a CyberSWITCH. If you did not order the
Manager software, you must use the local administration console option. Call your distributor to
order this software.
To connect the Remote Administration Console, follow these steps:
1. Using the appropriate cabling, attach the administration console PC to the system.
The remote administration port is a 9-pin, male RS232 serial adapter. For the location of the
port, refer to the Hardware Overview chapter of the User’s Guide.
You can use a standard RS232 cable with a null-modem device for direct attachment between
the administration console PC and the CyberSWITCH. If you are using remote attachment,
connect the administration console PC and the system to their respective modems.

2. Install the Manager software onto the administration console PC. This step is OPTIONAL,
since it requires the administration console PC to have a hard disk with 1 MB of free space. You
can execute the Manager software from the diskette; however, running this software from the
hard disk is more efficient.
Insert the Manager software diskette into the diskette drive on the administration console PC
and enter the following command, replacing “diskette drive letter” with the appropriate
administration console PC drive (for example “A”). Type:
install<return>
When the DOS prompt reappears, the software installation on the administration console is
complete.
The Carbon Copy software on the Manager diskette is delivered with the following default
settings:
Comm Port Address COM1
Baud Rate 9600
Modem Type Direct Connect
If you want to attach remotely to the system using modems, you must change these settings by
using the CCINSTAL program. Refer to the Remote Management chapter of the User’s Guide for
details on running this program.
LOGIN ON THE CYBERSWITCH
Once you have a connection to the CyberSWITCH, you will be presented with a prompt to enter
your log in id. Use admin as the login id. You will then be prompted for a new password, so choose
a password that you will remember. If your software was previously accessed by your distributor,
your password will be admin (in lower case).
After you have logged in, you many enter any command at the system prompt.
MAKING CONFIGURATION CHANGES
We provide the following configuration tools to set up and/or alter your configuration:
CFGEDIT, the full configuration utility
Manage Mode, the dynamic management utility
The CyberSWITCH is configured using the configuration editor, CFGEDIT. To begin the
configuration process:
Start up the configuration editor, CFGEDIT. Your machine should be at the system prompt. To start
up the configuration editor simply type:
[system name]>
cfgedit
The main configuration menu should now be displayed. Refer to Connectivity for the configuration
steps required for the device you wish to connect.

Upgrading System Software
Note: If you are prompted for configuration information that you dont know, use the default.
This document will provide detailed instructions if something other than the default is
required.
Once the system is working, minor configuration changes can be made in real time with the
Dynamic Management feature. This feature consists of console commands that enable you to
display current system parameters, change many parameters dynamically, and write changes to
disk files so that they remain permanent. Before using Dynamic Management commands, you must
first enter the special Manage Mode by typing the following command at the system prompt:
>manage
While operating in Manage Mode, only Dynamic Management commands are available. All other
system commands are ignored until you exit Manage Mode.To save changes to Manage Mode,
enter the
commit
command. To leave Manage Mode, enter the
exit
command.
UPGRADING SYSTEM SOFTWARE
The system upgrade consists of a set of 3.5" diskettes that contain the necessary upgrade software.
These upgrade diskettes may be used on more than one CyberSWITCH.
Once a system is upgraded, you may then upgrade any Manager diskettes purchased for the
upgraded system.
Notes: If you have an older platform, there is a possibility that the new features we have added
may use up the available memory. Therefore, this release may effect the number of
compression sessions available. You may want to purchase more memory for your
CyberSWITCH. Contact your distributor.
You may not perform a software upgrade on a system if you will be changing the country
version of the software. For example, you may not upgrade a NTT version to a US version;
you must instead do an install.
With the availability of the DM-24, modem upgrade is now a possibility. A Digital Modem
upgrade is beyond the scope of this section. For more information on upgrading modem
firmware, refer to the
modem upgrade
command in the System Commands chapter of the
User’s Guide.
LOCAL SOFTWARE UPGRADE INSTRUCTIONS
1. Insert upgrade diskette #1 into the diskette drive.
2. Issue the
restart
command to restart the platform.
3. At the DOS prompt type the following command to start the upgrade utility:
A:\UPGRADE <return>
The first section of the Release Notes will be displayed. You will be given a choice of reviewing
the Release Notes, or proceeding with the upgrade. We recommend that you review the
Release Notes for release highlights and important information related to this release.

Use <page down> and <page up> to view sections of the Release Notes. At anytime, you may
press the <escape> key to continue with the installation.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to continue with the upgrade. After 2-3 minutes, you will be
asked to select the platform type you are installing from a displayed list. Enter the Id of the
platform type you are configuring. In most cases, the platform name is on the front of the
machine being installed. If you cannot determine the platform being used, temporarily
configure the platform type as “CSX Series,” then call Technical Support to help you identify
the platform type.
If one of the following messages is displayed:
Couldn’t open the file C:\SYSTEM\PLATFORM.NEI
Error reading C:\SYSTEM\PLATFORM.NEI
Error reading platform type: there was no “n” in the string
Error reading platform type: type value is too large
Error reading platform type: type was not converted to an int
Error reading platform type: there is no “plat name” field
the diskettes you have are corrupted. Call your distributor or Technical Support for a new set.
5. Follow the on-screen prompts for inserting diskettes #2, #3, and #4.
6. If you wish to upgrade the Manager at this time:
a. issue the
quit
command to terminate the system software
b. insert the Manager diskette
c. at the DOS prompt type
C:\ADMIN\UG_ADMIN <return>
d. follow the on-screen prompts to complete the Manager Upgrade
8. Reboot to complete the Upgrade process.
Note: Before you configure your CyberSWITCH, issue the
ver
command and check to make
sure that you have selected the correct platform. If you have not selected the correct
platform, you must reinstall your software and select the correct platform during the
installation process.
REMOTE UPGRADE
The remote upgrade feature will allow you to upgrade the CyberSWITCH by transferring the
upgrade file and then remotely issuing a
restart
command. To accomplish this, you will need
the rupgrade.bat and the latest autoexec.bat files, available with release 7.2 and beyond.
To remotely upgrade the operational software, follow these steps:
1. From the PC/workstation, Telnet to the CyberSWITCH and login as admin.
2. Verify that the system is ready to receive TFTP upgrades:
Enter MANAGE MODE by typing
manage
<RET> at the system prompt.
•Using the MANAGE MODE command
tftp
, verify that:
TFTP feature is enabled
TFTP server is enabled
TFTP server is assigned ADMIN file access rights
•Using the MANAGE MODE command
fileattr
, verify that:
ADMIN has READ/WRITE access to CONFIG files

ADMIN has READ/WRITE access to OTHER files
Exit MANAGE MODE by typing
exit
<RET>.
3. If you are upgrading to Release 7.2 software, perform the following:
Using the TFTP client on the remote workstation, TFTP PKUNZIP.EXE to the \admin di-
rectory of the CyberSWITCH to be upgraded.
TFTP RUGRADE.BAT to the \ (root) directory.
TFTP AUTOEXEC.BAT to the \ (root) directory.
If you are upgrading from Release 7.2 to a later release, skip this step. (These files are already
included in 7.2 software).
4. Using the TFTP client on the remote workstation, TFTP UPGRADE.OSW to the \ (root)
directory of the CyberSWITCH to be upgraded.
Notes: If you experience a transmission timeout, check the retransmission setting on the TFTP
package. A retransmission rate of 10 seconds is usually sufficient; values less than that
may not work properly.
If you experience a problem transferring the file with TFTP, wait about three minutes
for the TFTP to fail, delete the incomplete file, and try again.
5. Telnet to the CyberSWITCH and issue the
restart
command.
HANDLING UPGRADE WARNINGS AND ERRORS
During Step 5 of the Upgrade process, checks are made to ensure that the system is in a “normal”
condition before an upgrade. If something abnormal is found, you will be warned of the
abnormality and the upgrade process is halted. In the event that you receive any of the following
error messages, contact Customer Support for assistance.
Possible errors:
Invalid OLD System file.
You can only upgrade from release: n.n.n.
Machine running release: n.n.n.
Could not open old System file.
Cannot run upgrade.
CHANGE DEFAULTS TO SECURE SYSTEM
The system is preconfigured with defaults that were designed to make it possible to have your
system up and running quickly. After your machine is functioning properly, some of these defaults
should be changed to make your system more secure. The following configuration changes are
needed to provide this security:
1. Either delete User1 and User2 or change their names and secrets.
Use Dynamic Management’s manage mode to carry out either of these functions. To enter the
manage mode, type
manage
at the system prompt. If you have no need for these types of

devices (PPP devices), simply delete these two devices. At the manage mode prompt, enter the
following command:
device delete
Follow the on-screen instructions for deleting each device.
To change the preconfigured devices’ names and secrets to secure the access to the system,
enter the following command at the manage mode prompt:
device change
Follow the prompts to change the device name and secret for User1 and User2. After you have
either deleted or changed the device information, make these changes permanent by entering
the
commit
command
2. Disable TFTP Server.
Disable through Dynamic Management’s manage mode. This will secure important device
information. Device information must be secure to prevent unauthorized access to the
CyberSWITCH. To disable this access, enter the following command at the manage mode
prompt:
tftp change
Then follow the on-screen instructions to disable the TFTP feature.
3. Change the admin and guest system passwords.
If your system was previously accessed by your distributor, the preconfigured password will
be admin (in lower case). Change this password to secure your system. To make this change,
enter the following command at the system prompt:
pswd
Then follow the prompts to enter a new password. Your password must be a 3 to 16 nonblank
character string. Be careful, passwords are uppercase and lowercase sensitive.
INITIAL INSTALLATION STEPS
There are initial configuration steps you must complete (regardless of remote device connections).
We outline these steps in the following sections.
BEGINNING THE CONFIGURATION PROCESS
1. When you power on your system, the CyberSWITCH program automatically starts. Enter your
log-in id (
admin
). Next, enter a password.
2. Start up the configuration editor, CFGEDIT; at the system prompt, type:
cfgedit
Note: If you are unsure of any configuration values, use the defaults.
Use the displayed CFGEDIT menu to complete the remaining configuration steps.

Initial Installation Steps
PHYSICAL RESOURCE CONFIGURATION
1. Select Physical Resources from the main menu. Then, select Resource to display your
CyberSWITCH’s resources.
2. The first resource that you need to add is the Ethernet resource. Select either Ethernet-1 or
Ethernet-2 from the displayed list depending on which adapter you have in your system. Enter
the Ethernet adapter’s slot number.
3. Add all WAN and/or Digital Modem resources. Depending on the type of WAN resource you
have in your system, select either a Basic Rate or Primary Rate resource from the displayed list
of resources. If you have selected Primary Rate, you should choose slave as the synchronization
type. You will also need to configure any expansion resources at this time if you selected
Primary Rate. (Note: The BASIC_RATE_NET resource type is a test facility. Do not select this
for your resource type.) After all resources have been added, return to the Physical Resource
menu.
4. Configure the WAN lines. Select Data Line from the Physical Resources menu. After you select
to add a line you will be prompted for the line name. Enter LINE1 for the first line name. Next,
select the line’s slot number and port number from the displayed list. The information
requested to complete the line configuration will depend on the line type. The following
summarizes the information requested for each line type and the most common responses.
For Basic Rate:
If you have a 4 port basic rate adapter, configure all basic rate lines at this time (up to four
lines)
select point-to-point for the interface type
add a data link (two for DMS and NI-1 switch types)
use Automatic TEIs for these data links
For Primary Rate:
ESF is the most common framing type
B8ZS is the most common line coding type
chose common-channel as the signaling type
select the length of the line from the CSU to the CyberSWITCH as line build out
5. If you are using any accesses besides switched accesses (such as dedicated accesses, frame relay
or X.25) configure the access now. Select Access. Select the type of access you wish to configure.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the configuration.
Note: Frame relay and X.25 accesses are available only if you have purchased the additional
software module for packet switched accesses.
The initial configuration steps on the CyberSWITCH are now complete. Press <return> repeatedly
until you return to the main CFGEDIT menu. Continue with the Connectivity section to complete
remaining configuration steps.

ONNECTIVITY
OVERVIEW
The Central Site CyberSWITCH can communicate with various other CyberSWITCH products via
a PPP connection. This connection can be used to transmit data and provide remote management
of your remote systems with Telnet, TFTP and SNMP. We will describe how to set up a PPP
connection with other CyberSWITCH systems, including the CSX100, and with a PC using a
terminal adapter or a modem. For these examples, we are assuming that CyberSWITCH Remote”
is the remote system, and will want to call into CyberSWITCHCentral”; Central may or may not
want to call Remote.
CONNECTING A CENTRAL SITE PRODUCT TO A WORKGROUP PRODUCT VIA PPP
In this section, we describe the configuration steps required for connecting a central site system to
a workgroup system via PPP. Separate instructions are included for bridging, IP routing with an
UnNumbered Interface, IPX routing, and AppleTalk routing configurations.
BRIDGE TO BRIDGE CONFIGURATION
Configuration for Site "Central"
The configuration on Central to allow Bridging to Remote using PPP is as follows:
1. Perform initial configuration steps.
2. Select Options from the main menu.
3. Select Bridging from the options menu, then ensure that bridging is enabled.
4. Select IP Routing from the options menu, then disable IP routing to allow timely bridging of IP
data.

Connecting a Central Site Product to a Workgroup Product via PPP
5. Under Security, select System Options and Information, then under System Information:
a. Set your System Name (Central). This matches up with Central device information
configured on Remote.
b. Set your System Secret (Central_S). This matches up with Central device information
configured on Remote.
6. Under Security, select Device Level Databases, select On-node Device Entries, then add a device
where the Device Name (Remote) must match the system name on Remote. When you add the
device you must then enter the following information:
a. Under ISDN Information select ISDN Line Protocol, then select PPP.
b. Optional: If you wish to dial out to Remote, under ISDN Information, enter a dial out
number (13135552222) and a base data rate (64Kb).
c. Under Authentication you must:
Change CHAP Secret so that it matches Remote’s System secret (Remote_S).
Optional: Configure Calling Line Ids (if Calling Line Id security was enabled).
d. Under Bridge Information you must:
Make sure that Bridging is enabled
Optional: If you wish to dial out to Remote you must enable Make calls for Bridge Data.
7. Optional: If you wish to dial out to Remote you have to specify the method that you will use
determine how to make bridge dial out calls. The two methods, and how to configure them are
listed below:
a. Select Options from the main menu, then the bridging menu, and from the bridging menu
select bridge filters. Set up a Bridge filter with connect as the action. For some filter types
you will need to specify Remote as the device.
b. Select Options from the main menu, then the bridging menu, and from the bridging menu
select Known Connect List, then enter the name of the Device (Remote) that you wish to call
if a packet is received whose MAC address is known to be at the location that was
connected earlier by the User’s device.
For a more detailed description of each of the above methods, refer to the User Guide’s chapter
titled Configuring Advanced Bridging.

ONFIGURATION FOR SITE "REMOTE"
The configuration on Remote so that it may use bridging to Central using PPP is as follows:
1. Perform initial configuration steps.
2. Under Options, select Bridging and make sure that it is enabled. Also, select IP routing and
disable IP routing to allow timely bridging of IP data.
3. Under Security, select System Options and Information, then under System Information:
a. Set your System Name (Remote). This matches up with Remote device information
configured on Central.
b. Set your System Secret (Remote_S). This matches up with Remote device information
configured on Central.

CONFIGURATION FOR SITE "CENTRAL"
The configuration on Central to allow IP Routing to Remote using PPP is as follows:
1. Perform initial configuration steps.
2. Under Options, select Bridging, then disable Bridging. Select IP Routing, then:
a. Enable IP Routing.
b. Under IP Interfaces add a LAN Interface (IP address 199.2.2.1).
c. Under IP Interfaces add a WAN UnNumbered Interface.
3. Under Security, select System Options and Information, then under System Information:
a. Set your System Name (Central). This matches up with Central device information
configured on Remote.
b. Set your System Secret (Central_S). This matches up with Central device information
configured on Remote.

configure a static route to the 201.1.2.0 LAN. When you configure a static route to a site that
uses a unnumbered interface you must enter the device name of the next hop device, Remote in
this case.

1. Perform initial configuration steps.

c. Under IP Interfaces make sure you have a WAN UnNumbered Interface.
3. Under Security, select System Options and Information, then under System Information:
a. Set your System Name (Remote). This matches up with Remote device information
configured on Central.
b. Set your System Secret (Remote_S). This matches up with Remote device information
configured on Central.
4. Under Security, select Device Level Databases, select On-node Device Entries, then add a device
where the Device Name (Central) must match the system name on Central. When you add the
device you must then enter the following information:
a. Under ISDN Information select ISDN Line Protocol then select PPP.
b. To dial out to Central, under ISDN Information you must enter a dial out number
(13135551111) and a base data rate (64Kb).
c. Under Authentication you must:
Change CHAP Secret so that it matches Central’s System secret (Central_S).
Optional: Configure Calling Line Ids (if Calling Line Id security was enabled).

b. Set your System Secret (Central_S). This matches up with Central device information
configured on Remote.
4. Under Security, select Device Level Databases, select On-node Device Entries, then add a device
where the Device Name (Remote) must match the system name on Remote. When you add the
device you must then enter the following information:
