What is a Plug-in?
ApluginisasoftwaremodulethatprovidesaninterfacebetweenaDatacardIDsoftware
applicationandaperipheraldevice(suchasacardprinter)orbetweentheperipheraldeviceand
acomponentwithinthedevice(suchasamagneticstripeencoderinstalledinsideacardprinter).
Thisguideis
concernedwithtwoplugins:
 TheprinterpluginisnamedDatacardSRCRretransferprinterplugin.Itspurposeisto
translateacard’sdesignelementssothattheprintercansuccessfullyprintthedesignontoa
card.
 TheencoderpluginisnamedDatacar dSRCRretransfermagneticstripeplugin.Itspurpose
istotranslatemagneticstripedatafromthecarddesigntoanoptionalmagneticencoder
moduleinsidethecardprinter.
Assigning Printer Plug-ins
PrinterpluginsmustbeassignedoneachcomputerthatprintscardsfromaDatacardID
softwareapplicationtoanSR200orSR300printer.
Do I Need to Assign the Printer Plug-ins?
Duringthecardprinterinstallationprocedure,thestepbystepinstructionstellyouwhento
powerontheprinterandwhentoconnecttheUSBcable(andthenetworkcable,ifprinteristo
beusedonanetwork).PleasefollowtheinstructionsintheDatacardSR200&SR300Card
Printers
InstallationGuidecarefullytoensurecorrectinstallation.
Iftheinstallationinstructionsareperformedcorrectly,thentheprinterisinstalledbeforethe
plugin,andthepluginisautomaticallyassigned.Ifthepluginisinstalledaftertheprinter,then
youmustmanuallyassigntheplugintotheprinter.(Refer
toAssigningthePrinterPlugins”on
page 3forinstructions.)
TheDatacardSRCRretransfermagneticstripepluginiscontainedwithintheDatacard
SRCRretransferprinterplugin.Whenyouassigntheplugintoyourcardprinter,both
pluginsareincludedinthatassignment.

Viewing the Current Plug-in Assignments
Whenprintingacard,youcandetermineifthecorrectDatacardprinterpluginsarebeingused:
1. OpenacardprojectandselectFile>PrintintheDatacardIDsoftwareapplication.
ThePrintCard(s)dialogboxdisplaysthenameoftheprinterpluginbeingused.
IfDatacardSRCRretransfer
printerpluginisnotdisplayed,youmustmanuallyassignthe
plugintotheprinter.(Referto“AssigningthePrinterPlugins”below.)
2. ClickOKtoprintthecard.
3. Examinetheprintedcardforproblems.
Ifyoufindelementsofthecardthatdidnotprintorencodecorrectly,it
couldbethatthe
wrongpluginisbeingused.RefertoAssigningthePrinterPlugins”belowtoverifythe
printerpluginortoassignthecorrectDatacardprinterplugintotheprinter.
Assigning the Printer Plug-ins
IftheDatacardpluginswerenotassignedwhenyourprinterwasinstalled,youcanusethe
AssignPrinterPluginsutility tospecifyassociationsbetweenavailableprinterpluginsand
installedprinters.
HowyouaccesstheutilitydependsonwhichDatacardIDsoftwareproductyouareusing:
 IntheID WorksorIDCentresuite,logontotheAdministratorapplication.FromthePrinting
menu,selectAssignPrinterPlugins.RefertotheAdministratoronlinehelptopicAssign
printerplugins”forstepbystepinstructions.
 WebIDuserscanaccesstheAssignPrinterPluginsutil ity throughtheDatacardWorkstation
Utility.
Thisisthewrongplugin.The
printerusesthisgenericprinter
pluginiftheDatacardSRCR
retransferprinterpluginhasnot
beenassignedtotheprinter.

1. OpenyourDatacardIDsoftwareapplicationandaccesstheAssignPrinterPluginsdialogbox.
2. ClicktoselectPluginintheViewByarea.
3. ClickthePrinterPluginNamedropdownlistandselectDatacardSRCRretransferprinter
plugin.
4. Fromthelistofinstalledprinters,select
theboxnexttoeachSR200orSR300printer.(The
defaultprinternameisSRCPU1.Thenamesofyourprintersmightbedifferent.)
5. ClickOK.
TheDatacardSRCRretransferprinterplugin(andtheincludedDatacardSRCRretransfer
magneticstripeplugin)isnowassignedto
eachprinteryouselectedinstep 4.Whenyou
printcardsfromyourDatacardIDsoftwareapplication,thosepluginshelpensurethatyour
carddesignandencodeddataarecorrectlyplacedontothecard.
Project Design Considerations
ID WorksDesignerincludessomefeaturesthatcannotbeusedwiththeSR200&SR300card
printersanddoesnotprovidefeedbackatdesigntimewhetherafeatureissupportedbythe
printer.ThissectionexplainswhichID Worksfeaturestoavoidinyourcarddesigns.

dialogboxtochangepropertiesoftheoverallcard

theEditFieldPropertiesdialogbox.ForthecardbackgrounditisontheBackgroundtabofthe
Edit
CardDesignPropertiesdialogbox.
Barcodes,whicharesenttotheprinterasgraphics,mustbeprintedwiththeblack(K)panel.
Ribbon Configurations
TheSR200&SR300printerpluginsupportstworibbontypes:YMCKandYMCKK.Theprinteralso
supportsYMCKPOandYMCUVKribbons.YMCKPOhasapeeloffpanelwhichremovesthe

protectiveretr ansferfilm.YMCUVKhasaUVpanel,whichprintswithtranslucentUVink.Both
requireadditionaldatawhichtheplugindoesnotsupport.
Designyourcardandsetprintingpreferencestousetheribbonsefficiently.Forexample,ifyour
carddesignhascolorfieldsonthefrontandonly
blackfieldsonthebackside,whenprintedwith
aYMCKribbon,onecompletesetofpanelsisused.Theyellow,magenta,andcyanpanelsare
usedforthefrontsideofthecardandtheblack panelisusedforthebackside.
Ifthiscardincludesabarcode,
locatingthebarcodeonthebackconservesribbonandresultsin
thebestappearanceonthefrontofthecard.Acarddesignwithcoloronfrontandback,and
blackprintingonbothsidesusestwosetsofYMCKpanels.
TheYMCKKribbonisthemos tefficientchoiceif
yourcarddesignhascolorandpureblackonone
sideandblackonlyontheotherside.

Smart Card Encoding
IfyourSR200orSR300cardprintercontainsanoptionalsmartcardreader,yourcarddesignscan
includedatatobeencodedontothecardsyouprint.
ProgrammingforsmartcardchipencodingisdoneoutsideoftheDatacardIDsoftware
application.Eachinstitutiontypicallydevelopsitsownproprietarysoftwareand
customplugins
tomeetitsencodingrequirements.
UsetheDatacardIDsoftwareSmartCardApplicationManager(shownbelow)tocreatesmart
cardfieldsandencodesmartcarddata.
When smart card encoding is required, connect the printer with a USB data cable only.
Network installation of the SR200 & SR300 card printers does not support smart card use.

Magnetic Stripe Encoding
IfyourSR200orSR300cardprintercontainsanoptionalmagneticencoder,yourcarddesigncan
includedatatobeencodedontothecards’magneticstripes.
WhendesigningcardswithaDatacardIDsoftwareapplication,usetheDatacardSRCRretransfer
magneticstripeplugintocommunicatemagneticstripedatato
theprinter,asdescribedinthe
sectionsbelow.
Designing an ID Works Project or WebID Application to
Encode Magnetic Stripes
1. OnyourID WorksProductionFormorWebIDpage,insertafieldforeachmagneticstripe
trackyouwanttoencode.
Tocombineinformationfromtwoormorefieldsonatrack,createacompositefield.For
stepbystepinstructionsrefertotheID WorksDesigneronlinehelptopic“Addacomposite
fieldtoaProductionFormor“DataViewPageCompositeFieldDefinition”intheWebID
ConfiguratorUtilityGuide.
2. Inyourcarddesign,insertamagneticstripefield.RefertotheID WorksDesigneronlinehelp
topic“Addamagneticstripefieldtoacard”forstepbystepinstructions.
3. Doubleclick
onthemagneticstripefield. TheEditFieldProperties[MagneticStripe]dialog
boxdisplays.
For WebID applications, the magnetic stripe track fields must be named as follows:
<Magnetic Stripe Card Field Name> : Track n
Forexample,ifyouacceptthedefaultmagneticstripefieldname(M agStripeField1),
thecompositefieldfortrack1ontheWebIDpagemustbenamedMagStripeField1:

8. PrintatestcardforyourprojectfromtheIDsoftware,usingtheID WorksProduction
applicationortheWebIDCardIssuanceWorkstation.
Sample cards printed in the ID Works Designer application are not encoded.
