particular attention to all the points concerning safety, and store
for future reference.
INTRODUCTION
CONGRATULATIONS! You have chosen one of the most technologically
advanced and reliable products available on the market. Your Viper
speargun is the result of years of continuing evolution and development
in new materials and technologies that improve performance, safety and
reliability. It is the ultimate expression of Mares' extensive experience in
the spearfishing sector.
Our spearguns are constructed using high technology production
processes and materials, entirely within our factories. This enables us
to check and test all the materials and components for durability and
reliability.
WARNING
Carefully read the instructions in this manual as they are essential
for protecting your own safety and prolonging the life of your
equipment. Diving equipment should only be used by persons who
have received adequate training. To ensure maximum safety, your
equipment should only be serviced by an AUTHORIZED MARES
LAB SERVICE CENTER.
WARNING
Under art. 18 of Italian Law no. 963/65, the use of spearguns is
permitted only to persons older than 16 (valid for Italy). Please
refer to current legislation concerning the use of spearguns in
other countries.
GENERAL TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS

DOUBLE GUIDE BARREL
The Viper Pro model uses an anodized aluminium barrel characterised by
a special section with an anti-bending profile.
The special aluminium used, combined with an upper shaft guide and a
lower line guide, makes it possible to achieve a rigidity never seen before
in an aluminum barrel of equal thickness.
The upper guide provides the correct support for shafts 6 to 8 mm in
diameter, increasing glide thanks to the minimal surface contact and the
water cushion that is created in the channel in the middle of the track
(Fig. 3A).
In addition to providing additional rigidity, the guide that runs underneath
the barrel protects the line inside the reel, preventing possible vibrations
and the risk of snagging the line among the rocks (Fig. 3B).
ERGONOMIC HANDLE
(Fig. 1A)
New ergonomic handle adaptable to both left and right handed users
and all hand sizes, including with thick gloves, as well as all firing styles
(using the first or second finger joint).
A special concave surface for the thumb and various anti-slip points
further optimize grip, ensure excellent sensitivity of movement when
fishing and reduce hand fatigue.
The cover of the handle is made of a soft anti-slip material in high-
visibility colors.
QUICK AND EASY TO OPERATE SAFETY CATCH
(Fig. 1B)
The Viper spearguns are equipped with a safety system located on the
right side of the handle, which when engaged ensures that the trigger is
locked and interferes with correct positioning of the hand to remind the
user that firing is disabled. The safety catch (Fig. 4) is easy to use thanks
to its ergonomic shape, which guarantees a secure grip when it is being
engaged or released (Fig. 4A-4B).
WARNING
The firing mechanism has been designed to ensure high
sensitivity and maximum safety.
To avoid damaging the firing mechanism, never insert the shaft
with the safety catch engaged.
WARNING
Only arm the speargun when fishing.
NEVER leave the speargun loaded, even with the safety engaged.
Do not attempt to remove or tamper with the safety catch, as this
can compromise your safety and that of others.
Mares declines responsibility for accidents to persons or property
arising from products that have been tampered with.
HIGHLY SENSITIVE FIRING MECHANISM IN REVERSED
POSITION
The reversed-position firing mechanism makes it possible to increase
trigger sensitivity.
The ergonomics, geometry and mechanical design of the trigger make it
highly sensitive to finger traction, reducing the response delay between
when the trigger is pulled and when the spearshaft is effectively released.
The Viper and Viper Pro spearguns use a highly durable, stainless steel
firing mechanism that ensures great reliability over time.
DOUBLE-ADJUSTMENT TRIGGER
(Fig. 1C)
This new trigger features screws that can be used to adjust sensitivity
(Fig. 5).
On the Viper Pro it's also possible to change the position of the forward
section of the trigger, with three different lengths for perfect adaptability
to different hand types (Fig. 1D).
WARNING
Do not attempt to change the sensitivity of the trigger. This operation
is extremely delicate and can cause harm to you or to others.
To ensure the utmost safety, adjustments to trigger sensitivity
must be performed strictly by an AUTHORIZED MARES LAB
REPAIR SHOP.
Ignoring this warning may risk causing harm to people or things.
VARIABLE DEFORMATION CHEST LOADING PAD
(Fig. 1F)
Loading effort can be considerable, especially when the speargun is
loaded for maximum power on the second notch of the shaft. During this
phase, it is important for the speargun to be optimally positioned. Our
variable deformation loading pad, thanks to its exclusive shock absorber
system, offers the ideal solution for a safe and comfortable pad (Fig. 6).
AUTOMATIC SIDE LINE RELEASE IN STAINLESS STEEL
(Fig. 1G)
Inserting the spearshaft into its seat in the handle causes the line release
to be locked. When the trigger is pulled, the shaft is ejected and the
line-release is automatically unlocked, releasing the monoline that was
previously tensioned (Fig. 7).
INNOVATIVE MUZZLE FOR VARIOUS TYPES OF SLINGS
(Fig. 2)
The geometry of the fastening point for circular slings (which can
accommodate diameters from 16 to 19 mm) is calculated to fasten them
without ruining them. The two holes provided for passage of the slings
have two openings that make it possible to deftly and quickly replace
them, and their offset position allows for perfect positioning of the sling,
also improving the lateral aim of the speargun (Fig. 2A). You can decide
whether to use the dual slings by inserting the sling fork adapter (Fig. 2B).
A simple operation requiring a few minutes is all it takes to convert the
speargun to the system you prefer.
BRIDGE ON THE MUZZLE
(Fig. 2C)
The assembly of the bridge is extremely simple.
Insert the bridge in the special seat and then insert its fastening pin; if not
using the bridge, position the monoline as shown in Fig. 8.

S-POWER SLINGS
Our spearguns are furnished with slings made of pure latex. Thanks
to the material and the special production process, these slings retain
their elasticity up to the breaking point (machine elongation test) and
deteriorate (splitting or drying) 3 to 4 times slower under equal usage
conditions; furthermore, S-Power slings provide unparalleled progressive
thrust, and retain their power better over time. On the Viper Pro, 19-mm
S-Power Speed slings are used, which feature an interchangeable
Dyneema wishbone. This innovative system reduces friction to a minimum
when shooting. The S-Power Speed slings can only be used on shafts
with pins.
INSERTING THE CIRCULAR SLING AND THE OPTIONAL
SECOND SLING
Insert the circular sling in its seat after wetting it. To make the sling
easier to insert, pull toward either end, stretching it thin in the middle,
and then insert it in place (Fig. 9B).
If you want to use two circular slings at the same time, they must be of
the same diameter, but should not exceed 18 mm in diameter. The high
load can make the weapon difficult for users to manage and can create
dangerous situations.
If you want you can purchase different slings from an AUTHORIZED
MARES DEALER.
TAHITIAN SHAFT
The single-tip 17-4 ph hardened stainless steel Tahitian shaft is provided
in a 6.25 mm diameter for the Viper version. The Viper Pro features a
6.5 mm Speed Tahitian shaft with three highly resistant pins and flap
located at the bottom.
WISHBONE
Mares articulated wishbones are highly resistant thanks to the 4 mm
arms that are tested under the toughest conditions. They can be adapted
for use on all Mares slings and feature a special angle to make loading
easier.
The Viper Pro was designed to be used exclusively with Dyneema
wishbones. Using wishbones other than those indicated may damage
certain components of the weapon.
VERTICAL SPIRO REEL FITTINGS
(Fig. 1H)
All the spearguns in the Viper series can accommodate Spiro Vertical
reels. Assembling the reel is quick and easy: simply insert the reel
support until the screw fixing holes are aligned. For specific assembly
instructions, consult the Vertical Spiro reel manual.
The reel line is protected by the guide that runs along the bottom of
the barrel, preventing possible vibrations and the risk of snagging the
line among the rocks. To guarantee that the line stays aligned with
the speargun and reel, it passes under the pin positioned on the reel
connection before it is connected to the handle (Fig. 10).
LANYARD ATTACHMENT
To favor unrestricted movements, a line can be connected to the sturdy
ring under the handle to recover the speargun (Fig. 1L).
PRECAUTIONS
Before loading the speargun, always check the following items:
Check the correct operation of the firing system, including the safety
catch.
Check that the muzzle is mounted correctly.
Check that the sling is correctly screwed onto the wishbone or onto
the fork adapter if using double slings.
Check the correct insertion of the circular sling or of the fork adapter
on the muzzle.
Check that slings are in good condition, and in particular check for
signs of cracking, damage, holes, or splitting, and make sure they are
not coming away from the ends. If any such defects are found, replace
the slings immediately.
Check that the wishbone pins are firmly secured, and that the
wishbone itself does not show signs of wear.
When using S-Power Speed slings, check that all the Dyneema
®
parts are whole and that all the fastenings and junction points hold
properly.
Check that the monoline is whole and that it is firmly fastened to the
end of the gun and the shaft (Fig. 11).
If using spearguns in sandy areas, avoid contact with the sand or small
stones that could create malfunctions and damage, especially inside
the release mechanism.
After use, and before putting the speargun away, always fit the flap
protector on the spearshaft.
In the event of a malfunction, do not attempt to repair the speargun
yourself, but immediately consult an AUTHORIZED MARES LAB
SERVICE CENTER or send it directly to MARES.
WARNING
Never load or fire when out of the water. Never fire in situations
in which you cannot see or when visibility is poor, and never in the
direction of other people or objects. Otherwise you risk injuring
yourself or other people, with the chance of causing serious
harm. Keep in mind that the speargun must be used exclusively
for spearfishing, and that in accordance with Art. 131 of Italian
Presidential Decree 1369/1968, the weapon must not be kept in
the armed position when not diving.
LOADING THE SPEARGUN
PRE-DIVE PROCEDURE
Release the safety catch (Fig. 4B).
Slide the spearshaft (with the line attached) along the track, inserting
it into the handle with the notches facing upward. Push the spear shaft
toward the handle until it clicks into place.
Check that the shaft is hooked correctly with the monoline slot on top
(Fig. 7). If not, reinsert the shaft in the housing in the grip and rehook
it.
Engage the safety catch (Fig. 4A).
Thread the monoline on the muzzle and then onto the side line release
as shown in Fig. 8 and Fig. 7.
WARNING
To prevent any possible physical damage, when loading the
speargun you should always wear gloves and padding/chest
protection.
LOADING IN THE WATER
With the shaft already inserted in the firing mechanism, check that the
safety catch is engaged (Fig. 4A).
Position the butt of the gun as shown in Fig. 12A.
Pull the sling toward you until you can hook the "V" of the wishbone
into the first notch on the shaft. If you want more power, move the gun
into the position shown in Fig. 12B and then pull the sling until you can
hook the "V" of the wishbone into the second notch on the shaft.
UNLOADING THE SPEARGUN
(WITHOUT FIRING)
WARNING
In order to safely unload the speargun without firing, you must
be technically trained. We recommend unloading the weapon by
firing while you are still in the water, paying close attention to the
instructions provided in this manual.
Always unload the speargun while you are still in the water.
Make sure there are no other people around within range of the
speargun.
Check that the safety catch is engaged (Fig. 4A).
Rest the butt of the weapon against the middle of your chest.
Pull the sling toward you and remove the "V" of the wishbone from the
notch in the shaft and return the sling to the rest position.
If the speargun is equipped with a second sling, repeat the above
procedure.

WARNING
Never aim the speargun at other people, even if the safety catch
is engaged.
WARNING
NEVER leave weapons loaded when not being used for
spearfishing, whether you are in or out of the water. Changes in
temperature or accidental bumps could lead to serious harm to
people or objects.
MAINTENANCE
We recommend that you rinse the speargun thoroughly with fresh water
after every use.
Do not keep the speargun in a sealed case or container; it should be
stored in a well-aired place.
