SGM Network Admin setup
The SGM Network Admin is an intuitive software to set up networks, available free of charge at sgmlight.com. It is the main tool
you need to set up the DMX patch, to change settings, to update firmware, or to apply specific configurations in SGM VP fixtures.
Minimum PC / laptop requirements
The following requirements are mandatory to use the SGM Network Admin:
- Windows 10.
- Ethernet connection (10/100/1000 Mbps).
Setting IP Address and Subnet mask
In order to keep VP networks separated from other network traffic, the VP fixtures use IP addresses in the 2.x.x.x range, and
Subnet mask 255.0.0.0 (See figure 1).
To configure your computer: go to “Control Panel” > “Network and Internet” > “Network and Sharing Center” > “Change Adapter
Settings”. Double click the connection you want to use, press "Properties" scroll down to Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4),
select it and click on “Properties”. Then set “Use the following IP address” (see figure 1).
Figure 1: Conguration menu for IP address and Subnet mask
Figure 2: Conguration menu for IP address and Subnet mask
On the very first boot-up of the SGM Network Admin software, it will be necessary to select the correct network interface. To do
this, in the SGM Network Admin, go to settings and select the same IP address as for (TCP/IPv4), in this example it is 2.0.0.10
(See figure 2).
VP xtures' IP and MAC address
Every SGM VP fixture has its own dedicated MAC address which cannot be changed. The fixtures' IP address is generated from
its MAC address.
Note: The IP or MAC address cannot be modified.

Setting up the SGM VP xtures in the SGM Network Admin
Several settings can be modified, and sensor values can be monitored through the SGM Network Admin software. The multiple
filters and display options serve as a tool to achieve a fast and flexible work-flow. In order to use the SGM Network Admin properly,
fixtures should be using the latest firmware version. See how to upload new firmware on page 7.
Programming and control
The SGM VPL 1220-20's features 8 and 16-bit resolution RGB with several dmx modes. All SGM fixtures operate internally at
100Mb data communication.

Device conguration (1)
Displays the settings available for the connected fixtures (figure 3). The device configuration tabs are the fastest way to configure
multiple fixtures at the time. Compared to the fixture overview menu, the device configuration will remain accessible independently
on any filters applied.
Figure 3: Device conguration tab
DMX mode Configure the number of DMX channels in the fixtures
Frequency Select the LED refresh frequency for the selected VP fixture to prevent flicker on video recordings. The
recommended frequency is 1Khz, but 4Khz, 16Khz and 32Khz are also available.
Calibration The SGM calibration ensures a consistent color performance across all fixtures. By turning off the
calibration a brighter output can be achieved.
Flip Reverse the virtual orientation of the selected VP fixture, so the pixel count will start in one side or the
other.
Dark Boot When unchecked, the 4 pixel-clusters at one side will flash white upon restart.
5
Color control (1)
The color control sets a specific color for the selected VP fixtures. This is convenient for identifying or testing a physical fixture in
an installation. The color can be set using the RGB slider, numeric value or color picker and will display when the "Color control"
button is checked. (See figure 4)
Addressing (1)
The auto addressing function (figure 5), is a wizard tool that allows the user to automatically set DMX universes and addresses
for multiple fixtures in a simple and fast way. This function is especially useful when working with hundreds of fixtures at a time.
Maintenance (2)
Maintenance (figure 6) contains the functions: Rescan, Reboot and Update firmware. The rescan function will perform a new
search for fixtures. Reboot will force the selected fixtures to perform a restart. When selecting "Update" a pop-up window called
"Update Firmware" will appear (See figure 7), where the latest firmware will be displayed, and an option for updating will show up.
Do not close this window while updating.

Column displays (4)
Toggles the display of the adjacent columns in the fixture overview. This menu is practical to simplify the fixture overview.
Fixture overview (5)
This box displays all the connected fixtures and their configurations. The order of display can be arranged by pressing the label and
a number of parameters will appear (figure 9). There are two kinds of filters; one which orders the fixture in a specific way, such as
alphabetically; and one which allows search criteria, such as the default "contains" filter. When one fixture is selected, it is possible
to change settings similar those in the "Device Configuration" tab.
Connection menu (3)
This menu affects the fixture overview and switches between showing all connected devices or all connected physical cable links
(see figure 8). This is convenient for large installations, especially with fixture groups on different locations.

Grouping xtures
To sort fixtures into groups, drag and drop a fixture or a category name of a column to the group area (see figure 10). In figure 11,
the fixture has been grouped according to DMX mode and the fixtures have been compiled into four; one with 184 fixtures and
three groups have one fixture in each. This is convenient for troubleshooting.
Due to the need of discovering the fixtures every time the software is launched, the links may receive a different link number each
time, however, the position number within a link depend on the physical connection between fixtures. For labelling purposes, the
field "Name" allows each unit to receive a unique name according to the installation documentation (see "Physical management"
on page 8.)

shown values and they may therefore vary between products.
Updating Firmware
To update the firmware, select the fixtures and press update in the maintenance menu (see figure 6 on page 4 for menu overview)
and start the update. When the update has begun (See figure 13), do not close the window until the updating process is successfully
completed (See figure 14). It is recommended not to update all fixtures at once, but in smaller batches. The latest firmware will
always be included in the software when downloading SGM Network Admin from: www.sgmlight.com. It is possible to upload a
different, firmware through the settings menu (See figure 15).
Note: When uploading the firmware to the fixtures, it is recommended to perform the upload in batches.

Problem Potential cause(s) Remedies
The SGM Network Admin does not display
the connected xtures
No power to the xture. Conrm that: the mains power is switched on, the
cables are plugged in, and the power connector is
inserted and turned to its locked position.
No data to the xture. Conrm that: the mains power is switched on, the
cables are plugged in, and the power connector is
inserted and turned to its locked position.
A rewall is blocking the connection. Consult your IT department for instructions to disable
or bypass your rewall.
The xtures' rmware is 5.4 or older and therefore not
supported by the SGM Network Admin tool.
Update the rmware on the xtures.
The xtures are behaving unpredictable and
have random ickers.
Conicting IP addresses causing malfunctions. Make sure to implement an external switcher or data
processor with a virtual LAN.
The VP xtures are receiving giga-bit data. Congure Artnet client, switcher or processor to send
100Mb data.
Troubleshooting
The most common issues are caused by outdated software and missing data/power connection. However, some setups might
experience issues with overlapped IP addresses, which is why it is highly recommended to use a dedicated network.
Physical management and documentation
When installing larger installations it is highly recommended to give every fixture an unique name and document the physical
positions of the fixtures along with their corresponding universe and DMX channel. This documentation can be done in many ways,
but we recommend having a complete series of elevations and plans for the fixture installation, which are labelled correspondingly
to the fixtures.
Unsupported rmware versions
Some early firmware versions might not be supported by the SGM Network Admin. Fixtures with unsupported firmware will only
display Name, IP and Mac (see figure 16). First download the current firmware or SGM Network Admin at: www.sgmlight.com or
contact support at [email protected], and follow the steps in "Update firmware" on page 7.
Figure 16: The rst row shows a SGM VPL 1220-20 xture connected with an unsupported rmware version, while the second row
shows a SGM VPL 1220-20 xture running a supported rmware version.
Replacing a xture
If a fixture for any reason needs replacement, check the installation plot to document its exact location, name, DMX universe, DMX
mode, and DMX starting address (See physical Management on page 8). After replacing the fixture in the installation, rename and
re-address via the SGM Network Admin. The new fixture will show the model description in the field "Name", until modified by the
user.
