viii User Guide for ThinkAgile VX7820 Appliance, ThinkAgile VX 4-Socket 4U Certified Node
Chapter 1. Introduction
The ThinkAgile VX7820 Appliance and VX 4U Certified Node are high performance 4U rack servers that
support up to four Intel Xeon processors. They are enterprise-class servers designed for customers requiring
four processors, large amounts of memory, and numerous I/O connections. In addition, they are designed to
simplify vSAN deployment and management for customers through predefined server configurations that are
optimized around specific types of workloads. They are preinstalled with VMware ESXi and conform to best
practices and compliance guidelines for vSAN.
Note: A VMware vSAN cluster requires a minimum of three servers. The best practice is to use three or more
servers of the same machine type and configuration to provide a balanced and high-performance solution.
In addition, the servers are designed to utilize the Lenovo system management tools to create a unified
hardware management solution for vSAN deployments:
Lenovo XClarity Administrator, which provides firmware compliance functionality to ensure that the
ThinkAgile VX MT 7Z12 and 7Z13 Series servers are running the appropriate level of firmware for Lenovo
XClarity Controller, UEFI, and PCIe devices.
Lenovo XClarity Integrator, which provides VMware vCenter plug-in functionality so that ThinkAgile VX
MT 7Z12 and 7Z13 Series servers can be managed directly from vCenter.
The ThinkAgile VX MT 7Z12 and 7Z13 Series hardware is based on the SR950 rack server.
Figure 1. ThinkAgile VX7820 Appliance/VX 4U Certified Node
The server comes with a limited warranty. For details about the warranty, see:
https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht503310
For details about your specific warranty, see:

Typical vSAN architecture
A typical vSAN architecture includes three or more servers that are implemented as a single vSAN cluster.
Each server contributes storage to the vSAN cluster from the local disks on the server:
Hybrid Cluster The server provides a combination of solid state disks (SSDs) for caching and hard disk
drives (HDDs) for storage capacity.
All-Flash Cluster The server provides SSDs for caching and SSDs for storage capacity.
The following figure provides a conceptual view of the vSAN architecture:

The following figure provides a conceptual view of the vSAN architecture:
https://storagehub.vmware.com/t/vmware-vsan/vmware-r-vsan-tm-design-and-sizing-guide/
VX deployment architecture
When deploying a ThinkAgile VX MT 7Z12 and 7Z13 Series solution, the best practice is to use three or more
servers of the same machine type and configuration to provide a balanced and high-performance solution.
The systems are connected through switches for management and data:
A dedicated management network is used by the Lenovo XClarity Administrator to communicate with the
Lenovo XClarity Controller (XCC) on each of the ThinkAgile VX7820 Appliance/VX 4U Certified Node.
A redundant 10Gbps Ethernet network is used for VMware vSphere management and vSAN data traffic.
The redundant Ethernet network is implemented through two top-of-rack switches, such as the Lenovo
ThinkSystem NE1032 RackSwitch.
For more information about the Lenovo ThinkSystem NE1032 RackSwitch, see the following website:

Table 1. Server Specifications (continued)
Specification
Description
Power supplies
This server supports three types of hot-swap power supply units:
1100-watt power supply
input voltage 110V, 220V, or 240V ac
1600-watt power supply
input voltage 220V or 240V ac
2000-watt power supply
input voltage 220V ac
The power subsystem supports balanced N+N redundancy operation, where N =
1 or 2.
CAUTION:
1. 240 V dc input (input range: 180-300 V dc) is ONLY supported in Chinese
Mainland.
2. Power supplies with 240 V dc are not hot-swappable. To remove the power
cord, ensure you have turned off the server or disconnected the dc power
sources at the breaker panel.
3. In order for the ThinkSystem products to operate error free in both a DC or
AC electrical environment, a TN-S earthing system which complies to
60364-1 IEC 2005 standard has to be present or installed.
Minimal configuration for
debugging
Two processors in processor sockets 1 and 2
Two DRAM DIMMs in slot 8 and 20
One power supply in slot 1
One drive with HBA adapter and backplane
Six system fans (fans 1 to 6)
Acoustical noise emissions
(base configuration)
Sound power, idling: 6.1 bels
Sound power, operating: 6.1 bels
Note: The options supported in this server vary in function, power consumption, and
required cooling. Any increase in cooling required by these options will increase the
fan speed and generated sound level. The actual sound pressure levels measured in
your installation depend upon a variety of factors, including: the number of racks in
the installation; the size, materials, and configuration of the room; the noise levels of
other equipment; the room ambient temperature and barometric pressure; and the
location of employees in relation to the equipment.

ASHRAE compliance information (see the “Operating Environment” section of
ThinkAgile VX7820 Appliance/VX 4U Certified Node product guide on
http://
lenovopress.com/
for specific ASHRAE compliance levels for each server
configuration):
The server is designed for thermal compliance in ASHRAE A4 ambient
environments. Certain processor and adapter configurations will limit product
environmental support to ASHRAE A2 ambient conditions.
If 82xx processors are installed, 60 mm x 38mm, 19K internal hot-swap fans
(01PG490) must also be installed to meet CPU cooling requirements at 35°C.
205W processors used in an eight-socket configuration might experience a
slight drop in performance under extreme workloads when the ambient
temperature is above 30°C.
NVMe devices are supported up to an ambient temperature of 35°C.
