WARNING: Product installation & operation
This equipment must be installed and operated in accordance
with the Raymarine instructions provided. Failure to do so could
result in personal injury, damage to your boat and/or poor product
performance.

WARNING: Navigation aid
Although we have designed this product to be accurate and
reliable, many factors can affect its performance. Therefore, it
should serve only as an aid to navigation and should never replace
commonsense and navigational judgement. Always maintain a
permanent watch so you can respond to situations as they
develop.
Your SmartPilot will add a new dimension to your boating enjoyment. However, it
is the skipper’s responsibility to ensure the safety of the boat at all times by
following these basic rules:
Ensure that someone is present at the helm AT ALL TIMES, to take manual
control in an emergency.
Make sure that all members of crew know how to disengage the autopilot
(see the Smart-Pilot Quick Start Guide)
Regularly check for other boats and any obstacles to navigation – no matter
how clear the sea may appear, a dangerous situation can develop rapidly.
Maintain an accurate record of the boat’s position by using either a naviga-
tion aid or visual bearings.
Maintain a continuous plot of your boat’s position on a current chart. Ensure
that the locked autopilot heading will steer the boat clear of all obstacles.
Make proper allowance for tidal set – the autopilot cannot.
Even when your autopilot is locked onto the desired track using a navigation
aid, always maintain a log and make regular positional plots. Navigation sig-
nals can produce significant errors under some circumstances and the autopi-
lot will not be able to detect these errors.

EMC conformance
All Raymarine equipment and accessories are designed to the best industry
standards for use in the recreational marine environment.
The design and manufacture of Raymarine equipment and accessories conform to
the appropriate Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) standards, but correct
installation is required to ensure that performance is not compromised.
Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment
(WEEE) Directive
The Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive requires the
recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment. Whilst the WEEE Directive
does not apply to some of Raymarine’s products, we support its policy and ask you
to be aware of how to dispose of this product.
The crossed out wheelie bin symbol, illustrated above, and found on our products
signifies that this product should not be disposed of in general waste or landfill.
Please contact your local dealer, national distributor or Raymarine Technical
Services for information on product disposal.

Introduction
The SeaTalk Remote Keypad enables you to remotely operate the following
instruments on a SeaTalk system:
Standard (110 mm x 110 mm) ST60 instruments.
Standard and MaxiView ST80 instruments.
The Remote Keypad has:
A group of six keys, used to control standard instruments.
A group of four keys, used to control ST80 MaxiView instruments.
Instruments can be organized in groups, up to a maximum of eight groups each of
eight instruments, to allow specified groups to be operated from different Remote
Keypads (see Chapter 4, Setup). For optimum system flexibility, you can also use
more than one Remote Keypads to operate any group of instruments. Typical
ways of using instrument groups are shown in the following illustration.

1.1 Basic operation
Key functions
The following illustration shows the functions assigned to each key or key
sequence.
Remote indicators
When the or key is pressed, each individual instrument in the associated
instrument group is selected in turn, on successive key presses. As each
instrument is selected, it displays a remote indication, during which time you can
control it from the Remote Keypad. The manner in which the remote indication is
displayed depends on the type of instrument:
On ST80 instruments, the display changes to reverse video (white on black).
On ST60 digital instruments, a REMOTE indicator is displayed.
On ST60 analogue instruments, either one or both of the TRUE /MAG or TRUE/
APP indicators flash on and off.
After 8 seconds, the remote indicator is removed, and the ability to remotely
control the instrument is suspended, until you again press a remote key to re-
display the remote indication.

1.2 General information
The Remote Keypad beeps when a key is pressed.
The Remote Keypad is permanently illuminated to facilitate operation in all
lighting conditions. The level of brightness is determined by the system illumi-
nation setting.

2.1 Maintenance
All Raymarine equipment and accessories are designed to the best industry
standards for use in the leisure marine environment.
Servicing and safety
Raymarine equipment should be serviced only by authorised Raymarine ser-
vice engineers. They will ensure that service procedures and replacement
parts used will not affect performance. There are no user serviceable parts in
any Raymarine product.
Some products generate high voltages, and so never handle the cables/con-
nectors when power is being supplied to the equipment.
Always report any EMC related problem to your nearest Raymarine dealer. We
will use any such information to improve our quality standards.
Cabling
Periodically examine all cables for chafing or other damage to the outer shield.
When necessary, replace and secure damaged cables.
Assistance
For advice or further information regarding this product, please contact the
Raymarine Product Support Department or your own National Distributor.
2.2 Fault finding
All Raymarine products are subjected to a comprehensive test procedure prior to
packing and shipping. In the unlikely event that a fault does occur with your
Remote Keypad, use the following check list to help identify and rectify the
problem.
Keypad does not operate
Make sure the cable connecting the keypad to SeaTalk is connected properly.
Make sure the cable is not damaged. Replace the cable if it is damaged.
Instruments do not operate in a logical sequence
Instruments and keypad are not grouped. Refer to Chapter 4, Setup chapter
for grouping details.

Chapter 3: Installation
3.1 Planning your installation
Before installing your SeaTalk Remote Keypad, spend some time considering the
best position. It should be fitted in a position which gives optimum accessibility
while at the same time satisfying the EMC installation guidelines and the other
Site requirements, described below. Ensure that you have all the necessary
components, templates and tools for the job.
EMC Installation Guidelines
All Raymarine equipment and accessories are designed to the best industry
standards for use in the recreational marine environment.
Their design and manufacture conforms to the appropriate Electromagnetic
Compatibility (EMC) standards, but correct installation is required to ensure that
performance is not compromised. Although every effort has been taken to ensure
that they will perform under all conditions, it is important to understand what
factors could affect the operation of the product.
The guidelines given here describe the conditions for optimum EMC performance,
but it is recognized that it may not be possible to meet all of these conditions in all
situations. To ensure the best possible conditions for EMC performance within the
constraints imposed by any location, always ensure the maximum separation
possible between different items of electrical equipment.
For optimum EMC performance, it is recommended that wherever possible:
Raymarine equipment and cables connected to it are:
At least 3 ft (1 m) from any equipment transmitting or cables carrying
radio signals e.g. VHF radios, cables and antennas. In the case of SSB
radios, the distance should be increased to 7 ft (2 m).
More than 7 ft (2 m) from the path of a radar beam. A radar beam can nor-
mally be assumed to spread 20 degrees above and below the radiating
element.
The equipment is supplied from a separate battery from that used for engine
start. Voltage drops below 10 V in the power supply to our products, and
starter motor transients, can cause the equipment to reset. This will not dam-
age the equipment, but may cause the loss of some information and may
change the operating mode.

Raymarine specified cables are used. Cutting and rejoining these cables can
compromise EMC performance and must be avoided unless doing so is
detailed in the installation manual.
If a suppression ferrite is attached to a cable, this ferrite should not be
removed. If the ferrite needs to be removed during installation it must be reas-
sembled in the same position.
Suppression Ferrites
The following illustration shows typical cable suppression ferrites used with
Raymarine equipment. Always use the ferrites supplied by Raymarine.
Connections to Other Equipment
If your Raymarine equipment is to be connected to other equipment using a cable
not supplied by Raymarine, a suppression ferrite MUST always be attached to the
cable near the Raymarine unit.

Site requirements
The SeaTalk Remote Keypad must be installed:
In a flat, smooth location.
At least 230 mm (9 in) away from your vessel’s steering compass and 500 mm
(20 in) from radio equipment.
So there is sufficient space behind the facia to accommodate the cables, fixing
studs and thumb nuts.
If you intend siting the keypad next to an instrument or another keypad, make
sure that they are separated by at least 3 mm to enable sun covers to be fitted,
when required.

3.2 Procedure
Install your SeaTalk Remote Keypad as follows:
1. Using the template at the rear of this handbook, mark the centres for the fix-
ing stud clearance holes (2) and the aperture (3) for the rear of the keypad.

2. Drill the two 5 mm (3/16 in) fixing stud clearance holes (2).
3. Cut out the 45 mm aperture (3), then remove the template.
4. Remove any rough edges from the bulkhead.
5. Peel off the protective sheet from the self-adhesive gasket (4) then stick the
gasket into position on the rear of the instrument.
6. Screw the two fixing studs (1) into the keypad.
7. Offer up the assembled keypad, gasket and studs to the bulkhead, and plug
the SeaTalk cables (6) into the back of the keypad as shown.
8. Fit the keypad to the bulkhead, by inserting the fixing studs (1) through the
drilled holes (2) and securing with the thumb nuts (5). Tighten the thumb nuts
BY HAND, until the keypad is secure. Do NOT use a wrench to tighten the nuts.
Connecting to SeaTalk
Connect your SeaTalk Remote Keypad to SeaTalk by plugging the supplied
SeaTalk cable into a convenient 3-Way SeaTalk connector block.
Autopilot connections
When the associated instrument system is configured for use with an autopilot, a
SeaTalk link between the instrumentation and the course computer is required.

• If you require extension cables, please refer to the display head installation
chapter for a list of options.
3.3 Check before going to sea
EMC conformance
Always check the installation before going to sea to make sure that it is not
affected by radio transmissions, engine starting etc.
In some installations, it may not be possible to prevent the equipment from
being affected by external influences. In general this will not damage the
equipment but can lead to it resetting, or momentarily may result in faulty
operation.
