DMC Repair Manual Camera Overview
Overview
This section of the Repair Manual gives an overview of the Digital Microscope Camera (DMC).
It only provides the necessary information pertaining to features and specifications for the
camera.
Note: For detailed information pertaining to setting up the camera, installing and starting its
software, assigning SCSI ID's and checking SCSI connections, and using application
software, refer to the DMC User Guide.
This camera (Figure 1-1) is used to capture high-quality digital color images from light
microscopes and other optical instruments. It uses a unique, million-pixel, 12.5mm CCD
(charge coupled device) to capture pictures with up to 16.7 million colors. The camera
transfers these pictures in seconds to an IBM-PC-, PowerMac- or PowerPC-compatible
computer as high resolution (800 x 600 pixels) or super-high resolution (1600 x 1200 pixels)
TIFF images.
Figure 1-1. Digital microscope camera
Using the Microsoft Windows or PowerMac/PowerPC software provided with the camera, you
can display a viewfinder image on a computer screen, choose resolution and other options,
enhance color balance, brightness, contrast and sharpness, then transfer the picture to an
image-processing application or a disk drive.
The camera has a SCSI-2 connection requiring no frame-grabber or other special hardware or
software. It also includes a SCSI-2 adapter board for adding a SCSI port to a computer.
Using a standard .63, 1:1, or larger C-mount adapter, the camera attaches easily to
microscopes for most types of transmitted-light and reflected-light microscopy.
The camera also features a tripod mount and Xsync connection for use with standard C-mount
lenses on a copystand.

Features
Table 1-1 list and describes the features of the camera.
Table 1-1. Camera Features
Feature Description
Power Switch Turns the camera on and off.
Strobe X-sync Connector Connector for electronic flash, if used with the camera.
Termination Selector Turns camera SCSI termination on or off.
SCSI Connector One (1) 25-pin standard SCSI connector. Connects to
the host computer SCSI port via the provided SCSI
cable.
SCSI Selector Sets the SCSI address of the camera. Preset at 4.
Note: Do not use 7 or 0, which are customarily
reserved for the host computer and for
PowerMac/PowerPC hard drives.
If possible, avoid SCSI ID 3, which is often
used for internal CD-ROM drives.
Power Connector Connection for the AC power adapter.
WARNING
Always connect the camera to AC power when it is
connected to the computer. If the camera or any other
SCSI device turns off while connected, it could corrupt
data on your hard disk.
Power Indicator LED Lights green to indicate that the camera is powered on.

Table 1-1. CameraFeatures (Con't)
Feature Description
Not Shown in Figure 1-2:
Power Adapter Provides surge-protected 5.8 Vdc, 3-amp power for the
camera from 110-240 Vac power outlets.
SCSI Cable (2 meter) Connects the camera to a PowerMac/PowerPC
and DB25/50 Pin computer or the PC SCSI-2 adapter.
Centronics Adapter
SCSI Host Adapter Adapter board for adding a SCSI port to a computer for
communicating with the camera and other SCSI
devices.
Software Diskettes TWAIN driver (for Windows 95 and Windows NT only),
Plug-in software for PowerMac/PowerPC systems, and
Polaroid DMC Direct camera utility software for
Windows 95, Windows NT, and PowerMac/ PowerPC
systems.
DMC TWAIN Driver :
Using the TWAIN driver requires an image-processing
application (not provided) compatible with the TWAIN
specification.
DMC Direct Software:
If you do not have an image-processing application
compatible with TWAIN, DMC Direct software can be
used to transfer pictures from the camera to the host
computer.
Tripod Mount Standard mount for attaching the camera to a
copystand or tripod.

Table 1-1. CameraFeatures (Con't)
Feature Description
C-mount Accepts standard C-mount adapter for attachment to
microscopes, other optical instruments and C-mount
lenses.
Note: Attaching the camera to amicroscope requires .
a 63 or 1:1 C-mount adapter (not provided)
compatible with your microscope.
Do not use a .5 C-mount adapter, because it
will produce image vignetting (dark corners).
Refer to the applicable microscope’s instruction
manual or contact the microscope
manufacturer for more information about
C-mounts.
Caution
Before attaching a C-mount adapter or lens to
the camera, verify that the threaded end of the
adapter does not exceed 0.195 inches (5mm).
Longer C-mount adapters may damage the
camera.

DMC Repair Manual Parts Replacement
Cautions
Electrostatic - Digital Microscope Camera circuitry can easily be damaged by small
Discharge static discharges. Always use an anti-static mat and an ESD wrist-
Warning strap when disassembling, assembling or repairing the camera with
the bottom extrusion removed.
Inspection and - Whenever disassembling a Digital Microscope Camera for parts
Cleaning replacement, inspect it for dust and debris. If necessary, clean the
camera to assure that dust in the optical path does not degrade its
performance.
Connectors - The connectors in the Digital Microscope Camera have locking tabs
(Figure 2-1) which secures the flex cable in place. To remove a flex
cable, first pull back the two (2) locking tabs and pull the flex cable free
of the connector. To install a flex cable, align it in the connector and
make sure it is fi\ully seated befor pushing in the two (2) locking tabs.
Figure 2-1. Typical flex connector
Screw - Do not reuse the front and rear panel screws. Always use new
Replacement screws (PH PA 4-40 x .75) when reinstalling the front and rear
(Front /Rear panels. These screws are coated to prevent them from backing
Panels) out.

Disassembly/Assembly of Camera
This section of the Repair Manual describes the Digital Microscope Camera's disassembly and
assembly procedures. Before performing any of the procedures described in this section, make
sure that the camera has been turned off and that its power pack has been unplugged.
Note: Care should be taken throughout all disassembly and reassembly procedures never
to smudge or soil the camera's anti-alias optical filter or CCD imager.
Bottom Extrusion (Figure 2-2)
Removal
1. Remove the two (2) screws securing the bottom extrusion to the front panel.
Note: Bottom extrusion has the tripod mount screw hole.
2. Remove the two (2) screws securing the bottom extrusion to the rear panel.
3. Lift off the bottom extrusion from the camera assembly.
