1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 About this manual
This manual contains important information about using the
machine. To ensure safe handling and error-free operation, read
the manual before using the machine. Pay special attention to
section 2 SAFETY, page 12. Some sections are not relevant for
all machines; options, selections and customizations may vary.
1.2 Intended readers of this manual
The content of this manual is intended for operators using the
machine or performing relevant maintenance.

1.5.1 Intended use statement
The intended use of this washer-disinfector, including approved
accessories, is to clean, disinfect and dry reusable medical items.
The device is not intended to clean and disinfect invasive devices
as end-point processing.

Items may be made of stainless steel, titanium, aluminum, plastic,
rubber or silicone.
1.5.3 Intended users
The intended users of this washer-disinfector are operators and
service technicians.
Operators
Operators are persons using the machine for its intended use. A
typical person in this user group is a nurse, assisting nurse, or
manager at a Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD). The
operator must understand the concepts of cleaning and disinfection
as part of infection control in the intended user environment. The
operator must have knowledge of local routines and requirements.
Typical tasks/responsibilities:
• Loading/unloading medical items
• Selecting and starting programs
• Determining whether the program was successful
• Deciding how to handle the medical items
• Daily maintenance
• Daily troubleshooting
Service technicians
A typical person in this user group is a trained Getinge employee

This washer-disinfector is a stationary installation used in facilities
such as Central Sterile Supply Departments (CSSD), next to the
OR rooms, hospital labs, or in hospital wards.

1.6 Potential misuse
• Use wash programs intended for the items to be processed,
consult the Program Sheet for details.
• The washer-disinfector is not intended for use with household
detergents.
• The washer-disinfector is not intended for the cleaning and
disinfection of bedpans or urine bottles (ISO 15883-3).
• The washer-disinfector is not intended for the cleaning and
chemical disinfection of thermolabile endoscopes (ISO
15883-4).
• The washer-disinfector must only be operated by persons with
knowledge as stated in this manual.
• To function properly, maintenance must be performed as stated
in this manual.
• The process parameters must only be modified by persons
with adequate knowledge to perform this task.

This washer-disinfector has an estimated service life of 10 years
(40 000 cycles), provided that the recommended maintenance and
service stated in the manuals have been carried out according to
the instructions.

2.1 Safety functions
2.1.1 Door pinch protection (56A)
If anything is detected between the door and the door frame when
closing, the built-in door pinch protection is activated and the door
stops. The door will not close as long as it is obstructed.
2.1.2 Password protection
The password protected programs can only be started by users
with extended rights (login required).
2.2 Safety labels on the machine

surfaces.
Warning: dangerous voltage Pay attention when close to live parts. Do not
touch electrical equipment or installations.
2.3 Personal protection
Working with the machine includes handling heavy loads and
contact with hot surfaces and detergents. Wear protective gear,
such as, protective footwear, gloves, protective clothing, glasses
and other equipment in accordance with local regulations.
2.4 Accident or incident reporting
Accidents or incidents must be reported in accordance with local
regulations.

The machine is available in two models: 56M with a manually
operated door and 56A with an automatically operated door.

3.2.2 Electrical outlet (option)
WARNING!
Risk of machine damage.
Do not use the optional electrical outlet for
equipment other than that specified below.
-Only use the electrical outlet with computers or
validation equipment.
The electrical outlet (option) is only available for the UK market and
is only used with computers or validation equipment. Residual
current device included.

3.2.3 Control panel
A machine with two doors has one control panel on
each side (soiled side and clean side).
The control panel layout may vary depending on
the options installed on the washer-disinfector.

3.2.3.1 Touchscreen
The machine is controlled by tapping commands on the
touchscreen. The touchscreen also displays alerts. There is one
touchscreen on each control panel. For more information, see
section 3.3 Control system, page 21.

The printer (option) automatically produces reports (log data)
during a program. The printer is installed on one control panel
(clean or soiled side).
The indication lamp shows the status of the printer:
• A steady green light = the printer is working correctly.
• A flashing green light = printer error, for example, out of paper.
3.2.4 Door
The machine can be equipped with one or two doors:
• One door for loading and unloading on the same side.
• Two doors, one door for loading and one door for unloading on
the opposite side.
On machines with two doors, the interlocking system prevents
cross-contamination from the soiled side to the clean side by
allowing only one door to open at a time.
Depending on the machine model, the doors are manually or
automatically operated. On manual machines, the door is opened
and closed by hand. The door locks automatically when it is
completely closed. On automatic machines, the door opens and
closes completely automatically. Machines with automatic doors
have built-in door pinch protection.

3.2.5.1 Upper guide rail (option for 56M)
The upper guide rail (option) can only be used with
specific wash carts, see the Product Specifications
for accessories.
The spray arm in the chamber must not be removed
other than during maintenance. Removing the
spray arm may affect the cleaning result.
The horizontal metal tracks guide the wash cart into the chamber
during loading and unloading. The upper guide rail (option) is only
to be used with the accessories intended for the guide rail, for
example the Upper Basic cart. The Upper Basic cart is meant for
smaller items such as small bowls or instrument trays.
The upper guide rail (option) also contains a spray arm on the
upper docking.
3.2.5.2 Guide rail
The horizontal metal tracks guide the wash cart into the chamber
during loading.
3.2.5.3 Docking
The docking secures and keeps the wash cart in place in the
chamber and acts as an inlet for water and heated air.
3.2.5.4 Strainer
The strainer filters large particles in the water to allow the water to
circulate and to avoid conditions that promote the growth of
bacteria.
3.2.5.5 Spray arm manifold
The spray arm manifold distributes process water or heated air to
the spray arm.

3.2.5.6 Spray arm
During the cleaning phase, the spray arm rotates and distributes
water and detergent evenly in the chamber. During the drying
phase, the spray arm distributes heated air.
3.2.6 Barcode scanner (option for 56A)

1 Barcode scanner
The built-in barcode scanner (option for 56A) is used for automatic
program selection. The barcode scanner reads the barcode on the
wash cart as it enters the chamber.

on the loading/unloading side.

3.2.8 USB (option)
Only use the USB stick delivered by Getinge.
Do not remove the USB stick while data is being
saved. When the touchscreen displays a warning
that the USB memory is almost full, it is time to
transfer the data to another storage device.

The USB (option) is used as a backup for process reports. The
USB port is located inside the detergent cabinet.
The process reports are automatically saved to the USB stick. A
flashing light on the USB stick indicates that data is being saved.
When the touchscreen displays a warning that the USB memory is
almost full, it is time to transfer the data to another storage device.

The detergent cabinet contains the detergent system that
doses and distributes the detergent to the chamber. As standard,
two dosing pumps are installed. Two extra dosing pumps are
optional.
The detergent system warns if the detergent level is too low in one
of the containers or if the flow of detergent between the container
and the chamber is too low.

3.2.9.1 How detergents are labeled
If a detergent label or dosage tag is missing or if
the product name on the label is not the same as
the product name on the detergent container,
contact service personnel.
