Chapter 1:
Introduction
This guide provides both background and procedural information for using DesignPro
Manager. Because business requirements and user preferences can vary for each company,
the material contained herein should be viewed as a general guide only.
As you step through the material, please remember that your specific business needs will
govern selection of the options and preferences described. Similarly, certain selections
will require that some tasks be repeated, while other selections will allow you to omit
tasks entirely.
DesignPro Manager Overview
DesignPro Manager is a Windows-based desktop program for launching and managing
applications. The DesignPro Manager workspace provides a central location from where
you can access the applications and utilities available within the DesignPro suite.
DesignPro Manager also provides an Explorer view of all drives, incorporating standard
MS-Windows functionality. The Explorer view in the Explorer window can be used to
display all of the physical files and folders on your computer and network. The Elixir
Resources view in the Resources window can be used to display files and folders in your
computer according to resources types. This is done with the help of virtual folders.
Additionally, DesignPro Manager has numerous productivity-enhancing features,
including those that enable you to:
Convert resources from one format to another. This is helpful while printing, when
you need your resources in a single format.
Link files to applications, thereby allowing you to start an application and load a file
in one step.
Establish shortcut icons for DOS or Windows-based applications for launching from
DesignPro Manager.
Helps you to directly access the contents of the physical folder using the virtual
folder, providing easy access to resources in a very organized manner.
14 DesignPro Manager for AFP User Guide
This guide describes all functions and features of the DesignPro Manager, therefore
certain options described may not apply to your specific configurations. In such cases,
unavailable options display in gray (disabled) on menus and dialog boxes, and some
screens and icons may not display at all.

will allow you to open your AppBuilder files in DesignPro Visual PPFA.
Chapter 1: Introduction 17
Associated DesignPro Modules
DesignPro Tools for AFP employs five integrated modules to provide advanced
functionality for designing forms.
Following are the DesignPro Tools for AFP modules:
DesignPro Manager – a Windows-based desktop program for launching and
managing applications. You can also convert resource files to and from multiple
formats using the Converters application in the DesignPro Manager.
DesignPro Visual PPFA – a combined form editing and application building tool for
creating IBM PPFA PageDefs and FormDefs.
DesignPro Form Editor – an advanced forms design tool used to create and edit
forms for AFP printers.
DesignPro Font Editor – a complete font design application used for creating and
editing AFP raster fonts as well as elixir and PCL fonts. You can also open true type
fonts in this editor.
DesignPro Graphics Editor – a full service bitmap editor providing various
transformations and commands for tiling graphics into raster fonts.
