This booklet is divided into three sections: Ready..., Set..., and Go...
Here’s what you’ll find in each section:
Ready...
How to make sure the network is ready, where you can set up your system, and what you should find
in each of the boxes.
Set...
How to connect the cables, including monitor cables, camera and audio cables, and the PC audio
jumper cable; how to set up the microphone, receiver, remote control, keyboard, and ImageShare;
how to connect network cables (LAN, ISDN, V.35 or RS-449); how to attach the power cable; and
recommendations on how to set up your room.
Go...
How to start up the system, and where you can find more information.
To install the system, follow this booklet page by page. In most cases, however, you’ll be able to skip some
pages. For example, if your system has a PictureTel 80 camera and a LAN network interface, you can skip
the pages that discuss the PictureTel 70 camera and the other network interfaces.
About This Guide
Ready . . .
1
Before you begin installing the PictureTel
®
970 or PictureTel 960 system, you should make sure that the
network is ready.
The document Preparing Your Network for Collaboration contains worksheets that will help you get the network
ready. For example, for ISDN networks, the worksheets list the ISDN BRI dialect, the Network Number Type,
and so on. You can find a copy of the Preparing Your Network for Collaboration document at the PictureTel
documentation web site, http://documentation.picturetel.com. You or your network administrator should
follow the procedures in this document to prepare the network.
To connect to a LAN, you must have a LAN cable. If you dont have a LAN cable, contact your system
administrator.
Make Sure the Network Is Ready
2
Before you unpack all of the PictureTel 970 or PictureTel 960 components, decide where you want to set up the
system. You can set it up either on a tabletop or on a cart, and you can position the computer box either
horizontally or as a tower:

Choose Tabletop or Cart
3
The basic system comes packed in one carton. This carton contains the computer box, software,
documentation, camera, cables, and so on.
If you’ve ordered options with the system, such as a cart, a monitor, or another camera, the system may have
come packed in five or more cartons. This section describes the contents of both the basic system carton and
the other, optional, cartons.

The system carton contains four smaller boxes.

3. The third box in the system carton contains the main camera. Depending on the type of system you
ordered, you received either the PictureTel 80 or the PictureTel 70 camera. For the PictureTel 80
camera, this box also contains some of the audio cables you will need for the system.

If you have a PictureTel 970, your system comes standard with an ImageShare
device. If you have a
PictureTel 960, you may have also received an ImageShare if you ordered it as an option with the system.
The ImageShare lets you easily add video and audio input and output devices, such as a laptop computer, to
the system.
If you ordered a cart with the system, such as a Premier Cart, set up the cart before you continue with the rest
of the installation. For information about unpacking the cart, see the cart documentation.

Here’s the Premier Cart set up with a monitor on it:
If you ordered a second cart to hold a second monitor, you should set it up at this time as well.
You can order the PictureTel 970 or PictureTel 960 system with a variety of monitor and projector options or
with no monitor at all. For example, you may have received one or two monitors, a projector, or a combination
of these.
WARNING: Monitors are very heavy! If you ordered your monitor from PictureTel, please read the instructions
on the box before unpacking the monitor. Never lift a monitor out of a box without help!
Unpack the Optional Cart(s)
11
If you ordered one monitor, you received an SVGA/XGA monitor. In the carton with the SVGA/XGA
monitor, you’ll find the monitor power cable and the VGA cable. Depending on your monitor, other cables
may also be included; however, you do not use these cables with the PictureTel 970 or PictureTel 960
system.
If you ordered two monitors, the second monitor is an NTSC/PAL monitor. With a dual-monitor system, you
can view People on the NTSC/PAL monitor and view Content, such as presentations and reports, on the
SVGA/XGA monitor.
If you ordered a projector, see the documentation that came with the projector for information about what
comes packed with it.

Any remaining cartons you received contain other options you ordered with the system. Here are some of the
available options:
Additional cameras — You can purchase additional cameras for the system, such as a second pan-tilt-
zoom camera or a document camera.
Additional microphones — You can add more PowerMic microphones to the system by daisy-chaining
them.
Directory Service software — You can access the Central Directory, or “phone book,” of videoconferencing
sites using PictureTel Directory Service Tools.
Remote Management tools — You can use remote management tools that come with the system, such as
WebRemote and SNMP, or you can purchase PictureTel Network Manager as a remote management tool.
VCR kit — You can connect one or two VCRs to the system. Each kit contains the cables you need to
connect a VCR.
Look-At-Me-Button
(LAMB) — You can enable people who are not near the remote control or keyboard
to control the camera by adding LAMBs to the system.
IMUX — You can add an inverse multiplexer (IMUX) to the system to allow users to make calls over
multiple lines even when they have a single line.
Before connecting an option to the system, read the documentation for that option or see your system
administrator. For information about connecting a VCR to the system, see the PictureTel 900 Series
Collaboration System Administrator’s Guide.

Start cabling the system by connecting the VGA cable for the monitor:
Notes:
If you purchased an NTSC/PAL monitor, see the PictureTel 900 Series Collaboration System
Administrator’s Guide for information about connecting the VGA cable in a dual-monitor system.
If your monitor is different from the one in this illustration or if you ordered a projector, refer to the
documentation that you received with the monitor or projector for information about connecting the cables.

14
Here’s how to connect the monitor power cable:
Notes:
If you purchased a Premier Cart and you have a single-monitor system, see the Premier Cart
documentation for information about connecting the monitor power cable.
If you have a dual-monitor system, see the PictureTel 900 Series Collaboration System Administrator’s
Guide for information about connecting the monitor power cable (with or without a Premier Cart).
Set Up the Monitor Power Cable
15
You’re now ready to set up the camera and connect the audio cables. However, before you do so, please note
that the audio cables connect to the system differently depending on whether you have a PictureTel 80 camera,
a PictureTel 70 camera, a cart with a Bose
®
speaker (such as the Premier Cart), two monitors, or a projector.
Also, do not attach the camera without referring to the camera documentation. In single-monitor systems, the
camera must be installed correctly on the SVGA/XGA monitor. In dual-monitor systems, it must be installed on
the NTSC/PAL monitor (see “Set Up the Camera with Two Monitors or a Projector” on page 20 for more
information).
The following five pages show you how the camera and audio cables should appear once you’ve connected
them according to your system configuration. These pages also refer you to the documentation you should
read for complete information about how to set up the camera and audio cables.
