Operator Safety / TURBO

Read these safety rules, and the safety rules in your units Operator’s Manual, and follow them closely. Failure to

obey these rules could result in loss of control of vehicle, severe personal injury to yourself, or damage to property

or equipment. The triangle in the text signifies important cautions or warnings which must be followed.

NOTE: In these instructions, “left” and “right” are

referred to as seen from the operating position.

Operator Safety WITH Turbo Blower

WARNING

• When turbo blower is removed from the mower deck,

the discharge chute must be properly installed in the

down position.

• If you remove the turbo blower from the mower deck,

the triple catcher must also be removed. (See Triple

Catcher Operator’s Manual for instructions.)

• If the mower stalls or the turbo blower chute plugs,

disengage the electric clutch (PTO), stop the engine

and remove the key. Set the parking brake. Wait for

moving parts to stop. Remove the foreign object or

clear the chute with a piece of wood before restarting

the engine. Never place hands into blower housing to

clear jammed object.

• Disengage the electric clutch (PTO). Shut off the

engine, remove the key, and wait for all moving parts

to stop before attaching, adjusting, or disconnecting

any part of the collection system.

• Read and obey all safety decals.

Preparing the Mower Deck for Turbo Blower

Installation

Remove the Mower Deck Guard

1. Remove the three (3) 5/16 bolts (A, Figure 1), and

washers (B) that secure the existing right hand mower

deck guard (C) to the mower deck.

Retain this hardware.

Remove the Discharge Baffle

1. Loosen and remove the hardware (A, Figure 2) that

secures the deflector plate (B) to the mower deck (C).

2. Remove the deflector plate.

3. Save the deflector plate and hardware.

When operating the unit without the collection system

installed, the user will experience a better cutting quality

if the deflector plate is reinstalled.

Remove the Spindle Belt

1. Using a 1/2” breaker bar, place the square end in the

square hole located in the end of the idler arm (A,

Figure 3).

2. Carefully rotate the idler arm counter-clockwise.

3. Slide the drive belt (B) over the edge of the RH spindle

pulley (C).

WARNING

Use extreme caution when rotating the idler arm with the

breaker bar, due to the increased tension in the spring

as the idler arm is being rotated. Injury may result if the

breaker bar is prematurely released while the spring is

under tension.

Remove the Right-Hand Spindle Pulley

1. Remove the 3/4-16 hex nut (A, Figure 4) & 3/4” spring

washer (B) securing the spindle pulley (C) to the spindle

shaft. Use a 1” wrench on the flats of the blade end of

the spindle shaft to prevent the shaft from spinning.

Save the 1/4” key (D), the 3/4-16 hex nut, and 3/4”

spring washer.

Install the Double Spindle Pulley

1. Install the double spindle pulley (A. Figure 5) and 1/4”

key (B) onto the spindle shaft.

2. Install the 3/4” spring washer (C) with the cone facing up

(see insert, Figure 5). Install the 3/4-16 hex nut (D) and

torque to 85-90 ft. lbs (115-122 Nm). Use a 1” wrench on

the flats of the blade end of the spindle shaft to prevent

the shaft from spinning.

Re-install the Spindle Belt

1. Refer to Figure 6 for proper drive belt (B, Figure 6)

routing. Make sure the belt is installed correctly on all

pulleys except the RH spindle pulley (C).

2. Using a 1/2” breaker bar, place the square end in the

square hole located in the end of the idler arm (A).

3. Carefully rotate the idler arm counter-clockwise.

4. Install the spindle belt on the RH spindle pulley.

Install the New Deck Guard

1. Install the new deck guard (A, Figure 7) onto the mower

deck and secure it with the 5/16 bolts (B) and washers

2. Remove the black knob (E) and rotate the upper deck

guard plate (D) clockwise so that the double pulley is

exposed.

Reposition the Discharge Chute Spring

1. Check the location of the discharge chute spring (A,

Figure 8) and the plastic tubing (B) used to keep the

spring in place.

2. In order to prevent an interference with the Turbo drive

belt, the discharge chute spring (A) and tubing (B)

positions should be switched so the spring is located

towards the front of the mower deck if it is not already.

Turbo Blower Installation

Install the Turbo Blower Assembly to the Mower

Deck

1. Rotate the discharge chute (A, Figure 10) to the upright

position so that it is out of your way for this installation

procedure.

2. Place the turbo blower (B) onto the discharge opening,

aligning the turbo blower tabs (D) with the mower deck

tabs (C).

3. The blower drive belt (A, Figure 9) needs to slide

through the opening below the discharge chute (B) and

above the discharge chute mount bracket / chute mount

rod (C).

4. Align the holes in the turbo blower tabs with the holes

in the mower deck tabs and install the front snapper pin

(E, Figure 10).

5. Install the rear snapper pin (F). It may be necessary

to pull back on the belt tensioning lever (G) in order to

install the rear snapper pin.

Install Blower Drive Belt

1. See Figure 10. Attach the blower drive belt (A, Figure

11) to the top pulley of the double pulley on the mower

deck. Pull back on the belt tensioning lever (B) to

slacken the belt. A view (from right front of mower) of

the belt routing is shown at right.

NOTE: While attaching, it may be necessary to unlatch the

turbo blower and realign the belt on the pulleys inside the

turbo housing.

Secure the Upper Deck Guard Plate

1. Rotate the upper deck guard plate (A, Figure 12)

counter-clockwise and secure to the deck guard using

the black knob (B).

Assemble and Install Tubes

This tube assembly combination is unique to the 1696366

Turbo Blower Kit. It requires the use of both the lower and

middle tube sections that were supplied within the kit. You

may have been supplied a separate lower tube section in

the 1694390 Hitch & Mount Kit that will not be used.

1. Connect the lower tube section (A, Figure 13) and the

middle tube section (B) by sliding the middle tube over

the lower tube and securing them with a #10-24 bolt (C),

washer (D) and nut (E).

2. Install the spring clip (F) onto the lower tube section (A)

using two sets of the #10-24 hardware (C, D & E).

NOTE: Before completing the next assembly step,

your Triple Catcher must be assembled and installed

onto the tractor. Please refer to the Operator’s Manual

that came with your Triple Catcher for instructions.

3. Slide the middle tube section of the assembly (G) up

into the upper tube section (H) that is connected to the

Triple Catcher.

NOTE: An adjustment to the upper tube section may

need to be made in order to get a proper fit. Trim up to

two inches of material off of the end of the upper tube

section. See Figure 14

4. Connect the lower tube section of the assembly (G)

to the blower housing (I) and secure it by latching the

spring clip (F) to the exposed hardware (J) near the

blower housing opening.

Before Operation

Clear the lawn of all sticks, stones, wire and other debris

which may be caught or thrown by the mower blades.

For best results, mow when the grass is dry. Wet grass

tends to clump and plug up the mower and grass catcher

For efficient grass collection, air circulation under

the mower deck, through the chute and into the

grass catcher or cart is very important.

For this reason, BEFORE YOU BEGIN MOWING you

should make certain the underside of the mower and

the underside of the catcher lid are free from grass and

debris.

Make sure that there is a snug fit between mower deck,

blower housing, tubes, and grass catcher cover.

Mowing with the Turbo Blower

Always operate with engine running at full speed when

mowing.

Grass should be cut often, and not too short. If grass is too

long or lush it may be necessary to keep ground speed

to a minimum or to cut only half the width of the mower to

prevent clogging. If grass is long, operate with mower in

high cutting position for first pass, cutting again in a lower

position on a second pass.

Look through the grass catcher tube to check for grass

flow. Do not open the grass catcher cover with mower

engaged.

If a large amount of cut grass is spilling out from under the

deck, the tube may be plugged or the catcher may be full.

Discontinue mowing, stop the tractor, disengage the PTO

and then empty the catcher or clear the tube.

WARNING

ALWAYS shut off the tractor. Disengage the PTO, and

allow all moving parts to stop BEFORE disconnecting or

clearing tube, or emptying grass bags.

Before leaving the operator’s position for any reason,

engage the parking brake, disengage the PTO, stop the

engine and remove the key.

To reduce fire hazard, keep the engine, tractor and

mower free of grass, leaves and excess grease. Do not

stop or park tractor over dry leaves, grass or combustible

materials.

Mowing without the Turbo Blower

If you need to mow without the turbo blower system in place

(for instance, if the grass is too wet to bag, but must be

mowed), you must remove the turbo from the mower deck,

and properly position the deflector BEFORE you begin

mowing.

If you remove the blower, you must also remove the

collector. (See Triple Collector Operator’s Manual for

instructions.)

WARNING

To operate without the collection system, the turbo

assembly MUST be removed and the deflector MUST be

in the down position.

Recommended Accessories

If operating on slopes when a rear attachment is installed,

use front counterweights. Never operate on slopes greater

than 10°.

After Operation

The turbo housing and grass catcher tube should be

removed for cleaning. Remove the tube by unlatching

the lower tube rubber band from turbo housing. When

reattaching, make sure there is a snug fit between the

mower deck, turbo housing, and grass catcher.

Removing the Turbo Blower

NOTE: For operation without turbo blower, the

deflector must be properly installed in the down

position.

1. Remove the grass discharge tubes. (See Triple Catcher

operator’s manual for removal instructions).

2. Remove the black knob (B, Figure 15) that secures the

upper deck guard plate (A) to the deck guard and then

rotate the guard clockwise to expose the double pulley.

3. Pull the belt tensioning lever (A, Figure 16) to remove

the tension on the blower drive belt and then remove the

blower drive belt from the double pulley.

4. Remove the rear snapper pin (B). It may be necessary

to pull on the idler arm to accomplish this task.

5. Remove the front snapper pin (C) and remove the turbo

(D) from the mower deck.

6. Install the deflector plate (A, Figure 17) to the mower

deck (B) using the original hardware (C) that it was

installed with.

6. Position the discharge chute in the down position.

7. Rotate the upper deck guard plate clockwise and

secure to the deck guard using the black knob.

8. Remove the Triple Catcher from the unit. (See Triple

Catcher operator’s manual.)

Storage

Remove any debris from the turbo housing. To clean the

housing, use a mild detergent only (other products may

damage tube).

If paint has been scratched on metal parts, touch up with

paint, or apply a thin film of oil.

To prevent corrosion, store in a dry area, away from

moisture.

by law. Some states or countries do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, and some states or countries do not allow the exclusion or limitation of

incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation and exclusion may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights and you may also have

ABOUT YOUR WARRANTY

Warranty service is available only through Briggs & Stratton Authorized Service Dealers. Most warranty repairs are handled routinely, but sometimes requests for warranty

service may not be appropriate. This warranty covers only defects in materials or workmanship. It does not cover damage caused by improper use or abuse, improper

maintenance or repair, or normal wear and tear.

Improper Use and Abuse - The proper, intended use of this product is described in the Operator’s Manual. Using the product in a way not described in the Operator’s

Manual or using the product after it has been damaged will not be covered under this warranty. Warranty coverage will also not be provided if the serial number on the

product has been removed or the product has been altered or modified in any way, or if the product has evidence of abuse such as impact damage or water/chemical

corrosion damage.

Improper Maintenance or Repair - This product must be maintained according to the procedures and schedules provided in the Operator’s Manual, and serviced or

repaired using genuine Briggs & Stratton parts or equivalent. Damage caused by lack of maintenance or use of non-original parts is not covered by warranty.

Normal Wear and Tear - Like most mechanical devices, your unit is subject to wear even when properly maintained. This warranty does not cover repairs when normal

use has exhausted the life of a part or the equipment. Maintenance and wear items such as filters, belts, cutting blades, and brake pads (except engine brake pads) are not

covered by warranty due to wear characteristics alone, unless the cause is due to defects in material or workmanship.

Other Exclusions - This warranty excludes damage due to accident, abuse, modifications, alterations, improper servicing, freezing or chemical deterioration. Attachments

or accessories that were not originally packaged with the product are also excluded. This warranty does not include used, reconditioned, second-hand, or demonstration

equipment or engines. This warranty also excludes failures due to acts of God and other force majeure events beyond the manufacturer’s control.
