1. Soft Keyboard
The WDT40x0 contains one on-screen Soft Input Panel (SIP) keyboard to allow the user
to enter Special Characters. The Special Character SIP looks and functions like a
standard keyboard.
To display the Special Character SIP keyboard, press the “*” key on the keyboard. The
following keyboard will then be displayed on the screen:

Since the WDT40x0 may not have a touch screen to select the characters, the arrow keys
on the keyboard can be used to move the “yellow box” to highlight a symbol on the
Special Character SIP. The arrow keys will wrap to the next row or column as you
navigate with the keys.
To select a character and pass it to an application, press the “Enter” key on the keyboard.

If the <enter> or arrow keys need to be used by the application instead of the Special
Character SIP, pressing <esc> followed by the arrow or enter key will send the key to the
application instead of having it handled by the Special Character SIP.
Pressing the “ABC” key on the Special Character SIP will switch the SIP to a standard
Alpha-Numeric Keyboard as follows:

This SIP is navigated in the same manner as the Special Character SIP. To return to the
Special Character SIP, press the “CH” key on the SIP.
Pressing “CAP” or “SH” will switch the SIP to the upper case Alpha-Numeric keyboard
as follows:

If the SIP is toggled off/on by the “*” key, the Special Character SIP will always be the
first SIP to be displayed.

2. Customization
Changing the Key which will Launch the SIP
The only customization allowed for the Special Character Keyboard is to use another key
to toggle the display of the SIP. This is controlled by the registry entry:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Symbol\LaunchSIP]
“VirtualKeyCode”=dword:0000006A
The value 0x6A is the hex code on the keyboard for the “*” key. The hex codes for the
P1 and P2 keys are 0x7B and 0x7C respectively.
The keycodes correspond to Microsoft’s Virtual Keycodes. You can view the complete
list at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms927178.aspx.
Automatically Launching the SIP
Most SIP’s allow programs to automatically launch the SIP when an input field is
displayed. The Special Character Keyboard SIP can not be automatically launched by
default. To allow the SIP to be automatically launched, the following registry key needs
to be set:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Symbol\LaunchSIP]
“AutoLaunch”=dword:00000001
If this key is set to “dword:00000000”, then the SIP will not be automatically launched.
3. Installation
If the SIP was downloaded as a zip file, then unzip the file to a directory on your PC.
Using Active Sync, copy the following files to the \Applications directory on the
handheld:
LaunchSIP.exe
WDT40x0SCSip.lnk
WDT40x0SCSip.cpy
WDT40x0SCSip.dll
WDT40x0SCSip.reg
Once these files have been copied to the \Applications directory on the handheld, then
initiate a cold boot of the device (press the 1 + 9 + Power keys for the WDT4090).
