TheLenovo®ThinkServer®RemoteManagementModuleworksasanintegratedsolutiononyourserver
system.Basedonanembeddedoperatingsystem,theLenovoThinkServerRemoteManagementModule
add-oncardprovidesbothexceptionalstabilityandpermanentavailabilityindependentofthepresentstate
oftheserver’soperatingsystem.Asasystemadministrator,youcanusetheLenovoThinkServerRemote
ManagementModuletogainlocation-independentremoteaccesstorespondtocriticalincidentsand
toundertakenecessarymaintenance.
DesignedtoworkwiththeBaseboardManagementController(BMC),thissmallform-factormezzaninecard
enablesservercontrolviaabuilt-inWebConsolefromanywhere,anytime.
ThisUserGuidedescribeshowtousetheLenovoThinkServerRemoteManagementModule(hereinafter
referredtoasRemoteManagementModule).Itprovidesanoverviewofthefeaturesofthemoduleand

Holdboardsonlybytheiredges.Afterremovingaboardfromitsprotectivewrapperorfromtheserver,
placetheboardcomponentsideuponagrounded,staticfreesurface.Useaconductivefoampadif
availablebutnottheboardwrapper.Donotslideboardoveranysurface.
Installingorremovingjumpers:Ajumperisasmallplasticencasedconductorthatslipsovertwo
jumperpins.Somejumpershaveasmalltabontopthatyoucangripwithyourngertipsorwithapairof
neneedlenosedpliers.Ifyourjumpersdonothavesuchatab,takecarewhenusingneedlenosed
plierstoremoveorinstallajumper;gripthenarrowsidesofthejumperwiththepliers,neverthewide
sides.Grippingthewidesidescandamagethecontactsinsidethejumper,causingintermittentproblems
withthefunctioncontrolledbythatjumper.Takecaretogripwith,butnotsqueeze,thepliersorother
toolsyouusetoremoveajumper,oryoumaybendorbreakthepinsontheboard.

Inordertoaccessthewebconsoleusingasecurelyencryptedconnection,youwillneedabrowserthat
supportstheHTTPSprotocol.StrongsecurityisonlyassuredbyusingaCipherStrength(encryption)of128
-Bit.Someolderbrowsersmaynothaveastrong128Bitencryptionalgorithm.
IfyouareusingWindows*InternetExplorer6.0orhigher,youcanverifystrongencryptionbyopeningthe

youwerelocatedattheremoteserver.Theresponsivenessmaybeslightlydelayeddependingonthe
bandwidthandlatencyofthenetworkbetweentheRemoteManagementModuleandRemoteConsole.
EnablingKVMand/ormediaencryptionontheCongurationRemoteSessionwebpagewilldegrade
performanceaswell.
TheRemoteConsolewindowalwaysshowstheremotescreeninitsoptimalsize.Thismeansitwilladaptits
sizetothesizeoftheremotescreeninitiallyandafterthescreenresolutionoftheremotescreenhasbeen
changed.However,youcanalwaysresizetheRemoteConsolewindowinyourlocalwindowasusual.

3.Dependinguponthedifferenceinaccelerationsettingsonbothends,mousecursorsmayeventually
gooutofsync.
4.Pressthe+or-keytochangetheaccelerationsettings.
5.Ifthelocalmousecursorislaggingbehindthehostcursor,pressthe+keytotrytobeinsync.Ifthe
localcursorismovingaheadofthehostcursor,pressthe-keytosyncitup.
6.Adjustthesyncusingthe+or-key,untilyouachievethemaximumsyncpossible.Agoodindicator
ofthatsettingisthatthemousemovementswitchesfromlaggingtoleadingorvice-versawhenthe
mostoptimalvalueiscrossed.
7.Toensurethatbothcursorsareinsync,waituntiltheyreachthebottomofthescreenandarestillinsync.
8.Onceinsync,pressALT+Atostopaccelerationcalibrationandsavethecurrentaccelerationsettings.
9.Nowwhenaccelerationsyncisdone,startmousethresholdcalibrationbyselectingCalibrateMouse

(assumingtheyarenotread-only),andbooted.Thepairofvirtualdevicesonlyappearontheremote
operatingsystemorBIOSsetupmenuswhensomemediaredirectionisactive.Thevirtualdevicespersist
acrossremotesystemresetsandpowerup/downs.Theydonotdisappearfromtheremotesystemuntilthe
checkboxesareuncheckedintheRemoteConsolewindow.
Notethatthevirtualdevicesarenotlimitedtonormaloppy/CDROMsizesandwillbeaslargeasthe
deviceorlebeingredirected.AUSBKeydriveisredirectedasavirtualoppydeviceratherthanaUSB
devicetoallowtheloadingofcustomdevicedriversduringremoteoperatingsysteminstallationwhichmay
requireaoppydrive.
