the USB-C port.
2. Plug the MX-100 into a USB-C charging cord (sold separately).
3. Charge the MX-100 using either a computer USB port or a standard, 5V
wall charger (sold separately).
4. The indicators LEDs will flash the current battery level while charging.
5. When fully charged, all 4 LED’swill remain lit.
6. Charging time can vary from 2 to 6 hours, depending on battery level and
the charger in use.
7. When complete, remove the USB-C cable from the MX-100 and replace
the rubber cap to prevent debrisand moisture from entering the charging
port.
11
Using the MX-100
You can begin using your MX-100 right away by downloading the Cognex Barcode
Scanners mobile application from the iTunes App store. Once the application is
installed, simply tap on the settings icon and select MX-100”. Note that the MX-100
must be attached and charged to enable this option:
You can also change the MX-100’s configuration using the Cognex Barcode
Scanners application by selecting ‘Configure MX-100’ on the settings menu (which
only appears after enabling the MX-100):
12
Below is a brief description of each Settings and its function.
Aimer Intensity sets the relative aimer LED brightness, from 0%(off) to 100% (full
strength). The default is 100%.
Aimer Blink rate sets the aimer LEDs relative modulation rate (or blink rate).
Higher blink rates cause the aimer LED to be on” more frequently, but can result in
degraded scanning performance. Lower blink rates can improve scanning
performance but may be more difficult to see. The default, and recommended
setting 8.
Illumination sets the initial illumination to on or off (i.e., when scanning starts).
The default is off.
Illumination Intensity sets the relative illumination brightness from 32
(minimum) to 100 (full strength). Well-lit areas may require no illumination,
13
moderately lit areas can benefit from moderate illumination (~50%), while dark areas
may require stronger illumination. Note that highly reflective barcodes may be
difficult to scan with too much illumination. The default is 40%.
Timeout sets the MX-100s scanning timeout, in seconds, from 1 second to 150
seconds. If no barcode is successfully scanned during the timeout period, the
MX-100 willautomatically turn off and scanning will end. This is a battery saving
feature. The default is 30 seconds.
Camera Preview turns the on-screen, live stream camera preview on/off. Since
the MX-100 barcode reader includes a co-axial aimer, on-screen preview is
unnecessary, though this feature has been included mainly for observational
purposes. The aimer’s green LED may be observed in the preview while the aimer is
running; this is normal. The default is off.
Use volume down as a trigger allows the iPhone’s volume down (and up)
buttons to be used as a trigger to start and stop scanning. This can allow for more
convenient scanning when an on-screen Start/Stop virtual trigger is not desired. The
default is off.
The following Advanced Settings are available. It is generally not necessary to adjust
these settings.
Pessimistic caching the Cognex Barcode Scanners application stores the
MX-100’s configuration in the iPhone’s memory; when the application is
suspended/resumed, the application typicallyretrieves these settings from the
memory cache, versus querying the MX-100 itself, which isslower. If there is the
possibility that another Cognex application for the MX-100 can be used on the device
(for example, MX Keyboard), which could change the MX-100’s settings, turn
Pessimistic Caching on so the application always retrieves the MX-100's
configuration from the device itself when the application is resumed.
14
Flash intensity sets the relative intensity of the iPhone’s flash when used for
communicating with the MX-100 from 10% to 100%. The default is 50%, which
should be sufficient for both iPhone 7/8 and iPhone 7+/8+ devices.
Developing for MX-100
The MX-100 is an innovative barcode scanning solution that uses the iPhone’s built-
in camera for image capture and a software engine for barcode recognition and
decoding. The MX-100 provides an on-axis, centered aiming pattern as wellas
integrated, diffused lighting for a more optimal scanning experience, while the
software scan engine provides fast, accurate barcode decoding.
The MX-100’s patent-pending optical communication protocol allows the iPhone and
MX-100 to communicate without the need for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth pairing, or a Lightning
port connection, greatly simplifying installation and configuration.
The MX-100 can be integrated with your mobile application using the Cognex Mobile
Barcode SDK, available for free from the Cognex Mobile Barcode Developer
Network website (https://cmbdn.cognex.com). This powerful, but easyto use
software development kit can be used to add MX-100 support into any number of
iOS application environments: native iOS, Swift, Cordova, Xamarin, Xamarin.Forms,
and React are all supported.
Furthermore, an application written with the Cognex Mobile Barcode SDK can also
be used with any of the Cognex high-performance, vision-enabled mobile terminals
(MX-1000 and MX-1502 series) as wellas barcode scanning using a smartphone or
tablet’s built-in camera
1
. Thismeans that when you need a more rugged or higher-
performing scanning solution like the MX mobile terminals, you simply upgrade your
device without having to upgrade your application as well.
1
Scanning with the mobile device’s camera is a separately licensed feature of the Cognex Mobile Barcode SDK.
