Fan tray overview
LSVM1S9810FAN
Introduction
The LSVM1S9810FAN fan tray contains six fans. It draws cooling air
into the device and provides airflow from the power module side to the
port side. It is hot swappable and energy efficient. It can automatically
adjust the fan speed based on the device temperature.

Introduction
The LSVM2S9810FAN fan tray contains six fans. It exhausts warm air
out of the device and provides airflow from the port side to the power
module side. It is hot swappable and energy efficient. It can
automatically adjust the fan speed based on the device temperature.

Installing and replacing a fan tray
The installation and removal procedures are the same for the
LSVM1S9810FAN and LSVM2S9810FAN fan trays.
Installing a fan tray
IMPORTANT:
Before you install a fan tray,
Determine the required number of fan trays based on the
number of installed switching fabric modules. If one switching
fabric module is installed, one fan tray is required. If two
switching fabric modules are installed, two fan trays are
required.
Make sure the airflow direction of the fan tray meets the
ventilation requirement at the installation site.
Make sure a switching fabric module has been installed in the
slot below the target fan tray slot.
To install two fan trays, make sure the models of the two fan
trays are the same.
To install a fan tray:
1. Wear an ESD wrist strap, and make sure it makes good skin
contact and is reliably grounded.
2. Use both hands to hold the fan tray with the "TOP" sign on the top
surface. Gently push the fan tray into the slot along the guide rails
until the fan tray is completely seated in the slot. See callout 1
in Figure 3 and Figure 4.
6
The fan tray slot is foolproof. If you insert the fan tray with the
upside down, you cannot completely insert it into the slot. If this
happens, pull the fan tray out and then insert it again with the
upside up.
3. Use a Phillips screwdriver to fasten the captive screws on the fan
tray to secure the fan tray in the slot. See callout 2 in Figure 3
and Figure 4.
If the
captive screws cannot be tightened, identify whether the fan
tray is installed correctly.
Figure 3 Installing one fan tray
IMPORTANT:
W
hen one fan tray is required, install it in the lower fan tray slot. To
maintain good ventilation, the upper fan tray slot must have a filler
panel installed.

8
If the target slot has a filler panel installed, remove the filler panel as
follows:
1. Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screws on the filler panel.
2. Insert a flat-blade screwdriver obliquely in the groove on the filler
panel. Then pull the filler panel slowly out along the guide rails.

Replacing a fan tray
CAUTION:
When you replace a fan tray from a running device, be cautious
of electricity hazards, and do not touch the rotating fans to avoid
bodily injury.
When two fan trays are installed, follow these guidelines to
replace the fan trays:
{ If one fan tray fails, the switch can operate correctly if you
keep the failed fan tray in position, and immediate
replacement is not required. If you want to replace the
failed fan tray, finish the replacement within 3 minutes.
{ If both fan trays fail, replace the fan trays one after
another. Make sure the device does not operate for more
than 2 minutes when no fan trays are installed.
Make sure the new fan tray is the same model as the replaced
one.
To replace a fan tray:
1. Prepare an antistatic bag for the removed fan tray.
2. Wear an ESD wrist strap, and make sure it makes good skin
contact and is correctly grounded.
3. Use a screwdriver to loosen the captive screws on the fan tray. See
callout 1 in Figure 6.
4. Holding th
e handle of the fan tray, pull the fan tray out of the
chassis. See callout 2 in Figure 6.
5. Put the removed
fan tray into the antistatic bag.
10
6. Install a new fan tray. For more information, see "Installing a fan
tray."
