Important instructions on the installation of the Sound Module System
Only for use within the BMW trading organisation.
Installation of the Sound Module System may only be carried out by a specialist workshop
which has available the necessary special tools and the required manuals (maintenance,
repair, diagnostic, etc.).
This high-quality audio system is for use only in combination with an original BMW
car radio!
If connected to a non-BMW make, BMWAG will accept absolutely no responsibility
under the guarantee for the Sound Module System.
The Sound Module System should only be installed in vehicles which are not equipped
with the BMW Hi-Fi system orTop Hi-Fi system.
Sound Module System II may only be fitted in combination with the Sound Module
System I retrofit/installation kit no. 82 83 0 022 121.
Care should be taken when installing cables/leads that these do not become kinked or
damaged.
Additionally installed cables/leads must be fastened with cable straps.
Item numbers relate only to the overviews or to the text by the side of the illustration
which is associated with it.
Customer information should be handed over to the customer.
The right is reserved to make changes.

Insert hexagon head screw M8x20 (21) from
below into the bracket above (19).
Place the bracket above (19) with inserted
hexagon head screw M8x20 (21) on the
amplifier (1) and screw it in with four fillister
head self-tapping screws 3.5x9.5 (2).
Take note of the positioning of the opening
(40) for the connector of the adapter cable.

Stick on the damping strip (23) as shown, on to
the top of the bracket (19) and the amplifier (1).

Cut insulating mat (41) above mounting screw
(42) of the control unit box and screw out
mounting screw (42).

heating is installed at this position, this will have
to be dismantled first.

hole (41) provided.
Do not screw mounting screw (40) in tight

Slide in the connected and preassembled
amplifier (1) carefully behind the cross brace (40)
and above the bottom bracket (18).
When inserting the amplifier, care should be
taken to see that no cable gets jammed or
damaged. In the subsequent assembly, it is
important that the step-by-step sequence is
adhered to precisely.
Insert hexagon-head bolt M8x20 (21) in the pipe
clamp (20) and screw on hexagon nut with collar
M8 (22).
Do not tighten it yet.

Plug together the black 17-pole radio connector
(40) with the black 17-pole pin housing (41) of
the adapter cable (4).
If necessary, move the position of the plug of the
connection cable for the CD changer in the black
17-pole socket housing (42) of the adapter cable
(4).
Connect the black 17-pole socket housing (42) of
the adapter cable (4) to the radio.Then install the
adapter cable (4) with the black 25-pole
connector (43) to the installation location of the
amplifier and fasten it with cable straps.
Connect adapter cable (4) to amplifier (1).
Couple the 25-pole connector (40) of the adapter
cable (4) to the plug strip (41) and, using a large
flat-tip screwdriver (42), press in the direction of
the arrow until it is heard to engage in the
amplifier housing.

Screw on bottom bracket (18) with two fillister
head self-tapping screws 3.5x9.5 (2) to the
amplifier (1). Attach adapter cable (4) along the
length of the main wiring harness (40) with cable
straps (16). Line up amplifier (1) taking care to
see that no cables are jammed or damaged.
Then screw tight the mounting screw (41) of the
control unit box and the hexagon nut with collar
M8 (22).
If park heating is fitted, now re-install the
previously disassembled Telestart receiver.

Push power cable (40), cable colour red, carefully
through rubber grommet (41) and then through
rubber grommet (42).
Seal rubber grommet (41) at engine side with
sealing compound.
Install power cable (40), cable colour red, under
the cable guide (41) from the left-hand side of
the vehicle to the right-hand side of the vehicle
and fasten it with cable straps (16).
Remove securing plug (42) from plastic
expanding rivet (43) and insert power cable (40),
cable colour red.
Install power cable (40), cable colour red, to
connection point and cut off excessive length.
Crimp on blade terminal contact (17) to the
power cable (40) and insert at the supply line
with fuse (8).
Screw cable lug ø8mm (41) coming from the
supply line with fuse (8) to the positive terminal
of the battery.
Then fasten supply line with fuse (8) and power
cable (40) with cable straps (16).

Install power cable (40), cable colour red, along
the audio wiring harness as far as the rear seat
bench and from there under the carpet along the
rear seat bench to the vehicle wiring harness
towards the right.
Stick down the power cable (40) in the region of
the rear seat bench with textile adhesive tape (41)
and then install it through the lead-through
grommet behind the rear seat bench into the
boot to the installation location of the battery (42).
Fasten power cable (40) with cable straps.

Install power cable (40), cable colour red, to
connection point and cut off excessive length.
Crimp on blade terminal contact (17) to the
power cable (40) and insert at the supply line
with fuse (8).
Screw cable lug ø8mm (41) coming from the
supply line with fuse (8) to the positive terminal
of the battery.
Then fasten supply line with fuse (8) and power

beam (7) on the amplifier (1) and screw it on with
four fillister head self-tapping screws 3.5x9.5 (2).
Take note of the position of the opening (40)
for the connector of the adapter cable.

carefully in the direction of the bulkhead.
When inserting the amplifier, care should be
taken to see that no cable gets jammed or
damaged. In the course of the subsequent
assembly, the sequence of work steps must be
adhered to without exception.
Screw the amplifier bracket for fitting against the
bulkhead (5) to the amplifier (1) using two fillister
head self-tapping screws 3.5x9.5 (2).
Press amplifier (1) upwards against the I beam
and mark the drill holes (40) through the amplifier
bracket on to the I beam (7).
Drill holes (40) ø4.0mm in the I beam and screw
amplifier bracket on to the I beam (7) with
hexagon head screws 4.8x16 (15). Fasten
adapter cable with cable straps.

Install power cable (40), cable colour red, to
connection point and cut off excessive length.
Crimp on blade terminal contact (17) to the
power cable (40) and insert at the supply line
with fuse (8).
Screw cable lug ø8mm (41) coming from the
supply line with fuse (8) to the positive terminal
of the battery.
Then fasten supply line with fuse (8) and power
cable (40) with cable straps (16).

Place amplifier bracket for fitting against the I
beam (7) on the amplifier (1) and screw it on with
four fillister head self-tapping screws 3.5x9.5 (2).
Take note of the position of the opening (40)
for the connector of the adapter cable.
7. Install amplifier and supplementary wiring harness (mounting system at I
beam, only vehicles without on-board monitor radio with battery in the boot)

Illustration shows driver's footwell:
Cut insulating mat above mounting screw (40) of
the control unit box in the engine compartment
on the left and screw out mounting screw (40).
Screw amplifier bracket for fitting against the
bulkhead (5) using existing mounting screw (40)
of the control unit box into the existing drill hole
(41) in the bulkhead.
Plug together the black 17-pole radio
connector (40) with the black 17-pole pin
housing (41) of the adapter cable (4).
If necessary, move the position of the plug of
the connection cable for the CD changer in the
black 17-pole socket housing (42) of the adapter
cable (4).
Connect the black 17-pole socket housing (42) of
the adapter cable (4) to the radio.Then install the
adapter cable (4) with the black 25-pole
connector (43) to the installation location of the
amplifier and fasten it with cable straps.
