Introduction to Cisco Connected Mobile Experiences
Cisco Mobility Services Engine (Cisco MSE) acts as a hardware platform to deploy and run Cisco Connected
Mobile Experiences (Cisco CMX). Cisco MSE is delivered in two modes—the physical appliance (box) and
the virtual appliance deployed using VMware vSphere Client . Using your Cisco wireless network and location
intelligence from Cisco MSE, Cisco CMX helps you create personalized mobile experiences for end users
and gain operational efficiency with location-based services.
Cisco CMX helps customers determine the location of devices in their network that can be used for various
location based services. The overall location as a platform service from Cisco is known as Cisco DNA Spaces.

Overview of Cisco CMX Services
Cisco CMX enables you to access the following services:
•DETECT&LOCATE: The Detect & Locate service uses the data provided by Cisco WLCs to calculate
the X,Y location (based on 0,0 at the top left hand side of the map) of wireless devices that are detected
by the access points that support the wireless LAN (WLAN) to a high degree of precision (generally +/-5
to 7 meters, 90% of the time with standard location technologies and +/- 3 meters, 50% of the time with
Hyperlocation technologies). Given the proper physical environment with access points deployed in
accordance with Cisco best practices for a location ready environment. The CMX GUI will be able to
display the physical location of:
• Associated Wireless Devices (shown as green dots in default view)
• Unassociated Wireless Devices (shown as red dots in default view)
• RF Interferers (Lightning icon)
• Access Points (Circles)
• Rogue Access Points
• Rogue Clients
• Active Wi-fi RFID Tags (Tag icon)
The background map can display:
• Inclusion and Exclusion Zones imported from Cisco Prime Infrastructure
• Analytics Zones created in Cisco CMX
• Thick Walls
• GPS Markers
Additionally when passed to the CMX Analytics service, this location information provides visibility
into customer movements and behavior throughout the venue and throughout the day. The Cisco CMX
Analytics service determines device parameters and can display this information as part of six different
unique widgets.
If you choose Location during installation, you will see the following services in Cisco CMX GUI.
• DETECT & LOCATE: Active for 120 day trial period unless either a CMX base or advanced license
is added.
• ANALYTICS: Active for 120 day trial period unless a CMX advanced license is added.

•ANALYTICS: This service provides a set of data analytic tools packaged for analyzing Wi-Fi device
locations. It functions as a data visualization engine that helps organizations use their network as a data
source for business analysis to understand behavior patterns and trends, which can help them take decisions
on how to improve visitor experience and boost customer service.
The ANALYTICS service allows for the creation of six different type of widgets.
• Device count
• Dwell time
• Dwell time breakdown
• Associated User Report

To clean up long queues and long-running processes, we recommend that you schedule a full restart of Cisco
CMX once a month during a low activity time, such as late at night or early in the morning. The restart takes
approximately 5 minutes to complete.
To restart Cisco CMX services, follow these steps:
1. Enter the cmxctl stop -a command.
2. Enter the cmxctl start -a command.

What's New in Cisco CMX Release 10.6.3
This section provides a brief introduction to the new features and enhancements introduced in Cisco CMX
Release 10.6.3:
• Smart License support: Smart License support in Cisco CMX helps to maintain the licensing information
with CSSM central repository and helps you to manage licensed software easily. Smart License
functionality helps you to eliminate storing of Product Activation Keys (PAK) and to reduce the efforts
in gathering information during license renewal process. For more information, see Smart License, on
page 150.
• Cisco CMX tethering enhancements: The following enhancements are made to Cisco CMX tethering:
• Cisco CMX version information is also included in the healthcheck api.
• In the location notifications sent to Cisco DNA Spaces, statistics notification information is also
included.
• When a map sync event is triggered in Cisco CMX, calibration model is also sent along with maps
data to Cisco DNA spaces.
• IP Address and Username Hashing: Cisco CMX hashes the IPv6 address in northbound notifications to
comply with privacy regulations as per General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
• V3 API support: Cisco CMX supports REST Version 3 APIs. With this enhancement, V3 APIs support
the following:
• Wi-Fi RFID Tags
• Rogue Clients
• Rogue APs
• Interferers
• Northbound Notification subscription limitation: This feature limits adding northbound notifications if
active notification count is five.
• MAC Randomization for associated devices: Cisco CMX will not filter random MAC when devices are
associated with it.
• Support Radius Authentication without FIPS: In Cisco CMX Release 10.6.3, the External Authentication
(AAA) feature is enabled without the Federal Information Processing Standard 140-2 (FIPS) or the U.S.
Department of Defense Unified Capabilities Approved Products List (UCAPL) mode. For more
information, see Configuring an External AAA Server with Cisco CMX, on page 193.
•System at a Glance > Time display: This feature ensures that Cisco CMX recommends a restart when
system update time reaches the configured threshold. For more information, see Understanding the
System Update Table, on page 129.
• Cisco CMX GUI Login information display: To comply with the US Department of Defense Information
Network Approved Products List (DODIN APL) requirements, Cisco CMX GUI displays the last login

• Syslog over TCP: Cisco CMX supports Rsyslog server configuration using TLS or IPSec protocol.
• New device support: Cisco Catalyst 9105AX Series Access Points
• Critical bug fixes: Provides critical bug fixes.
Deprecated Features in Cisco CMX Release 10.6.3
The following features are removed from Cisco CMX Release 10.6.3:
•Connect and Presence services: In Cisco CMX Release 10.6.3, Connect and Presence services are
removed. When installing Cisco CMX, the installer window does not show Presence node as an option
starting from CMX Release 10.6.3. The Connect tab is also removed from Cisco CMX.
• BLE support from Cisco CMX (BLE related features/APIs/CLIs): In Cisco CMX Release 10.6.3, BLE
support is removed. BLE tracking is not supported in Cisco CMX 10.6.3. The BLE Management Cloud
Application connection support from Cloud Application is not avaliable anymore.
• Client V1/V2 API support: In Cisco CMX Release 10.6.3, all V2 location client APIs are deprecated.
V2 API support is disabled from this release onwards.
•Analytics > Schedule Report: In Cisco CMX Release 10.6.3, the Analytics Schedule Report is
deprecated. The Schedule and Download options are removed from the Analytics > Dashboard.
•Analytics > Correlation and Path Widget: The Correlation and Path widgets are deprecated in
Analytics service.
•Analytics > Repeat Visitor History: In Cisco CMX Release 10.6.3, the support for tracking repeat
visitor history is disabled.
What's New in Cisco CMX Release 10.6.0 and Later
This section provides a brief introduction to the new features and enhancements introduced in Cisco CMX
Release 10.6.2:
•Single Sign On through SAML: Cisco CMX supports SAML (Security Authentication Markup Language),
which is an implementation of Single Sign On (SSO). You can configure Cisco CMX to authenticate
users. For more information, see Configuring SSO Authentication in Cisco CMX, on page 9.
• Validate SSL certificate for Northbound notifications: This feature ensures that a valid HTTPS packet
is created when webhooks are sent from Cisco CMX. For more information, see Configuring Notification
Listener in FIPS Mode, on page 180.
