Introduction
FBxConnectâ„¢ Configuration Software enables you to monitor, configure, and calibrate Emerson's
FB1100, FB1200, FB2100, and FB2200 Flow Computers. FBxConnect is designed for ease of use.
Drop-down lists help to direct selections and data entry.
Installing and Starting FBxConnect
FBxConnect Configuration Software is installed as a part of Emerson Field Tools. For more
information on installation of Field Tools and connecting to a device, refer to Emerson Field Tools
Quick Start Guide (D301703X412).
User Interface
FBxConnect is designed for ease of use. At the top of the screen, FBxConnect utilizes a ribbon-style
tabbed menu to navigate the software. Select a menu and submenu option to display the various
screens of FBxConnect in the display area. The left-side of the screen displays the device status
and communication statistics for the connected device. Click the links below to learn more about
each section of the FBxConnect screen.

Note
If the submenu extends past the end of your screen, use the arrows located on the sides of the
submenu to view the available options.
1.2.2 Device Status
The Device Status section provides general information about the connected device and the
connection to the device. Information includes the device type, type of connection, device
address, baud rate, and PC communication port.
A picture provides a visual representation of the device type with which you are communicating. A
circle icon is shown to the right of the device image, to provide a quick indication of the
communications status between FBxConnect and the device. When the connection status is
"online", the icon color is green. When the communications have been interrupted, the icon color
is red. When viewing a configuration in an "offline" mode, the icon color is grey.

1.2.4 Communication Statistics
The Communication Statistics section provides information about communications sent to and
received from the connected device. Information includes the communications status of the
device, number of timeouts, number of errors, and number of buffer overflows.

To view the communications information, select the down arrow in the Communications
statistics frame.

Field Description
Retries
This read-only field shows the number of times that messages
have been retried due to failures. A high number of retries can be
an indicator of a problem with your communications channel.
Ack timeouts
This read-only field shows the number or times the flow computer
has failed to acknowledge a message sent from FBxConnect
software.
CRC errors
Each message received from the connected device includes a
Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) component, which is used to
determine if an error has been introduced into the message during
transmission. This read-only field shows the number of times that
a message failed to be validated against its CRC. A non-zero value
can be an indication of a poor transmission channel.
Buffer Overflow
This read-only field shows the number of data link frames that
exceeded buffer size.
1.2.5 Point Picker
In many locations in FBxConnect, you can click browse ( ) to view the Point Picker dialog. The
Point Picker dialog allows you to reference a specific object or parameter in the database. These
are used typically when linking two objects together (like a meter to a station) or when
dynamically assigning an input or output variable to a source (like an analog input to a meter
temperature input).
You can select two different types of references in FBxConnect depending on the field: object
references and parameter references.
ï‚·
Object References — Sometimes the point picker is used to pick an object reference. In this
case, you are only able to select the object and instance of the object in the first column. For
example, if you are configuring a meter run and are setting the station assignment, you can
only pick which station you wish to assign, not a particular parameter. For object
references, the second and third column of the point picker are not used.
ï‚·
Parameter References — Sometimes the point picker is used to pick a parameter reference.
After clicking on the object type and instance in the first column, the second column
displays all appropriate parameters for this particular parameter reference. For example,
many parameter references need to be a numeric data type, and so no parameters that are
a character string type are displayed for selection.

Field Description
Filter
Click

to change which objects and parameters are displayed. Filters may be
based on object type, measurement type, or data type.
Note: Select No Filter to view all available Objects.
Object and
Instances
Object
A group of configuration settings and calculated or measured
values related to a specific function. For example, all values
associated with the device clock (second, hour, day, etc.) are part
of an Object named Clock. From the first column, click on the
object type you wish to reference.
Instance
There may be one or more occurrences of each type of object with
its own set of configuration settings and values. Each occurrence of
an object is called an instance. For example, there are multiple
instances of the object named Comm, and each instance
represents one of the device’s communication ports. After clicking
on the object you wish to reference, the available instances are
displayed. Click on the instance you wish to reference.

Field Description
Parameter
One of the configuration settings, calculated values, or measured values that is
a part of the object. Each parameter has a value as well as a set of attributes that
define it, such as data type, R/W access, measurement type, units, and
parameter health. After clicking on the object and instance you wish to
reference, the available parameters are displayed. Click on the parameter you
wish to reference.
Referenced
Parameter
If the point picker is used to pick a parameter reference, you can pick a
parameter directly from the object to which it belongs, or you can pick the
parameter through an object reference in a related object. For instance, to pick
a parameter to assign to an Average object, you can pick the DP Mtr_1 object
and the Station Assignment parameter and then the third column displays all of
the parameters that are available from the Station object that is assigned to DP
Mtr_1. This is useful because even if the station assignment later changes, the
Average object is always associated with DP Mtr_1.
1.2.6 Forward and Back Buttons
FBxConnect gives you the ability to navigate to a new screen to perform additional configuration
changes, and quickly navigate to the previous screen through the use of forward and back
buttons. These buttons are colored blue when they are active ( ) and grey when they are
inactive ( ). These buttons allow you to quickly jump back and forth between screens without
losing your spot in the configuration process. For example:
On the GC Data screen, the GC Configuration Object field has a forward button just to the right of
the field. Select the forward button ( ) to navigate to the GC Config screen and configure the
selected gas chromatograph.
Figure 7. Forward and Back Buttons
After you are done performing changes on the GC Config screen, select the back button ( ) to
return to the GC Data screen.

File Menu
Use the options in this menu to save a device configuration file to your PC, save a device
configuration to flash memory, load a saved configuration to the device, or close the current
connection to the device.
Figure 9. File Menu
The File menu contains the following options:
Save As — Save the current device configuration to a file on your PC.
Save (Offline Mode) — Save changes when modifying a configuration file in offline mode (not
connected to a device).
Download — Load a previously saved configuration file to the connected device.
Download to Flash — Save a previously saved configuration file to the flash memory of the
connected device.
Close — Close the current connection and exit FBxConnect.
Save As
It is good practice to save your configuration whenever you make a change to the device. When
you save a configuration, a configuration file is saved to your PC. This allows you to reload the
configuration if something should corrupt your device.
Note
FBxConnect configuration files only include true values for the R/W configuration parameters. The
R/O output parameters (like calculation results, meter run totals, etc.) are not saved from the
device, and instead are displayed as the default values.
In addition to saving your entire device configuration, you can also save only specific Objects and
Instances by performing a Partial Upload. This is useful when transferring configuration data that
is similar between multiple devices. For example, if all your devices have the same
communications configurations, you can save time by saving only the communications
parameters from a configured device and transfer that data to all the other devices.
